MATH 119 Title Explorations in Elemementary Math Ed Credit breakout 2 0 4 0 0 (credit lecture lab practicum work experience) PREREQUISITE(S): MAT 118 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will provide elementary and middle school teachers with laboratory-based experiences designed to teach and reinforce elementary statistics and probability concepts, as well as fractions, decimals, and geometry. Topics will be covered from both a practical and theoretical standpoint, with an emphasis on practical understanding using concrete examples. It will develop the conceptual foundation for elementary mathematics including the basic arithmetic operations, properties of operations, number theory and basic 2D and 3D geometry. COURSE COMPETENCIES: During this course, the student will be expected to: 1. Apply integrated mathematical problem-solving strategies to solve problems from within and outside of mathematics. 1.1 Develop a comfort with mathematics. 1.2 Recognize numerical patterns. 1.3 Use sequences, patterns, reasoning and proofs. 2. Develop fundamental concepts. 2.1 Develop algebraic thinking. 2.2 Use numeration to develop a new number system. 2.3 Represent numbers in different bases. 2.4 Develop a sense of place value. 3.
