Hospital Corpsman (HM) RATING ROADMAP April 2013 1 CAREER ROADMAP Seaman Recruit to Master Chief Roadmaps The career roadmap below will assist Sailors in the Hospital Corpsman (HM) community through the process of pursuing professional development and advanced education using various military and civilian resources e.g. PQS program; SMART Transcript; NKO (E-Learning); Navy College; etc. Successful leadership is the key to military readiness and will always require a high degree of technical skill, professional knowledge, and intellectual development. What is a Career Roadmap for HM? HM roadmaps are just what the name implies – a roadmap through the Enlisted Learning and Development Continuum from Hospital Recruit (HR) through Hospital Corpsman Master Chief (HMCM). The principal focus is to standardize a program Navy-wide by featuring the existing skills of HM necessary to be successful in the Navy. The ultimate goal of a roadmap is to produce a functional and competent HM. What is the Enlisted Learning and Development Continuum? Enlisted Learning and Development Continuum is the formal title given to the curriculum and process building on the foundation of Sailorization beginning in our Delayed Entry Program through Recruit Training Command and throughout your entire career. The continuum combines skill training, professional education, well-rounded assignments, and voluntary education. As you progress through your career, early-on skill training diminishes while professional military education gradually increases. Experience is the ever-present constant determining the rate at which a Sailor trades skill training for professional development. Do Sailors have to follow the Roadmap? Yes. The HM roadmap includes the four areas encompassed by the Continuum in Professional Military Education to include; Navy Professional Military Education, Joint Professional Education, Leadership and Advanced Education. Some training and education is mandatory (Recruit Training, HM “A” School at Hospital Corps School, NKO (E-Learning, etc…). Some may be directed by your chain of command (Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint courses), and the remainder is voluntary (NKO, E-Learning, college courses, etc.). Sailors are advised to seek out mentors, including your Command Master Chief, Senior Enlisted Advisor, Leading Chief Petty Officer, Leading Petty Officer and Command Career Counselor, and to make use of your Base Navy College or Education Office vast resources. All are uniquely qualified to help you along the way. HM CAREER PATH Hospital Corpsmen (HM) assist health care professionals in providing medical and dental care to Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their families and perform other duties that aid in the prevention and treatment of disease and injury. They may function as clinical or specialty technicians, medical administrative personnel, and health care providers at medical treatment facilities. They may also serve as battlefield corpsmen with the Marine Corps, rendering emergency medical treatment to include initial treatment in a combat environment. Qualified HMs may be assigned the responsibility of independent duty aboard ships and submarines; Fleet Marine Force, Special Forces, Seabee units, and isolated duty stations where no medical officer is available. Pipelined to journeyman Cschools. 36 36 Naval Academy, NROTC, BOOST, MECP, STA 21 36 Notes: 1. Sea Shore Flow is 36/36. The HM rating is shore centric. However, there is ample opportunity for Sailors to move into sea centric/operational NECs that allow for more sea duty opportunity and enable the Sailor to maintain a 36/36 rotation. HM rating promotes as a rate, not by NEC. 2. HMs should earn journyman NECs (i.e. LAB, Xray, PHARM, RT, CVT, OPT, SURG, ORTHO, PT, NUCMED, RADHLT, OT, HISTO, CYTO, GU, DMT, Dental Lab B, Dental Hygiene) early in a career and transition to senior or master NECs (i.e. IDC) as their career progresses. 3. HMs have opportunities to qualify for multiple warfare designations, and when assigned to platforms and units at which they are eligible to earn these qualification, are required to do so as designated by the warfare program instruction. Examples of qualifications HMs could earn are Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Insignia (EAWS), Submarine (SS), Aircrew Insignia (AC), Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman (SWCC), Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist Insignia (SCWS), Fleet Marine Force (FMF), and Expeditionary Warfare Specialist (EXW). Operational experience is important. FMF ribbon counts but if they return back to USMC, they need to have qualified for the pin. 4. MTS should be given consideration, but does not carry the same weight as warfare qualification. 5. HSAP/IA/GSA deployments or Humanitarian Relief/Disaster Relief (HR/DR) missions should be considered, but those alone should not outweigh 36 months of sea duty (type 2 and 4 duty). 6. Special Duty - White House, Camp David, Detailing, Enlisted Community Management, Headquarters Staff duty (OPNAV/HQMC/BUMED, etc). Recruit Company Commander, Instructor duty at HM “A”, FMTB (FMSS) are also very challenging. 7. Completion of the Senior Enlisted Academy and Enlisted Medical Department Executive Course should be considered, but not everyone is afforded the opportunity to attend. HM and HMDA accessions are 5YO. Basic Dental is not a C school, it is an accession program.. 4 HOSPITAL CORPSMAN PETTY OFFICER SECOND CLASS (HM2) JOURNEYMAN LEVEL NAME_____________________________________ SKILL TRAINING (Schools, courses and assignments directly related to occupation) REQUIRED SKILL TRAINING Course Title Hospital Corpsman Basic Dental Assistant HMSB ExMed. - Combat related field skills ExMed. - Non-Combat related field skills ExMed. - Patient Movement ExMed. - Shipboard Operations ExMed. - Tactical Combat Casualty Care *Enlisted Warfare Qualification *Required if afforded the opportunity Course Location CIN/CSE ID Course Length Fort Sam Houston, TX Fort Sam Houston, TX Local CMD NKO E-Learning NKO E-Learning NKO E-Learning NKO E-Learning NKO E-Learning B-300-0010 B-300-3300 96 days 40 days NMEMCRFS061 NMEMNCRFS061 NMEMPATMOV061 NMEMSHIPOP061 NM-10-EMTCCC-2.0 8h 4h 2h 4h 1h RECOMMENDED SKILL TRAINING Course Title Course Location Hospital Corpsman Rate Training Manual FMTB TCCC-S Prophylactic tech *Cold Weather Medicine * Mountain Medicine *Surface Force Medical Indoc *MRRS + SAMS *Field Mgmt. of Chem & Bio Casualties Course Navy Advancement Center FMTB East/West CA/FL/IL/VA/WA Local CMD training NOMI Pensacola NOMI Pensacola MMED CA/VA/Japan SPAWAR NOMI Pensacola or USAMRICD Aberdeen Md Fleet Hospital I & O Local Fleet Hospital CA/FL/NC/VA/WA Japan/Cuba NOMI/NEMTI EPMU NSCS Newport, RI / Various locations *DMLSS inventory mgmt Fleet Hospital Field Training AV/Hearing Acuity *Transportation Hazardous Materials CIN/CSE/ACE ID Course Length NAVEDTRA 14295B B-300-0013 B-300-4010 54 days 3 days B-300-0036 B-300-0023 B-300-1000 16 days 18 days 5 days B-6H-3001 or 5 days Date Completed Date Completed 6H-F37/300-F31 (School codes 879) NAVMEDLOGCOM non-Cantrac B-300-2404 B-300-0140 A-822-0012 8 days 5 days 12 days * Billet specific 68 NAVY ENLISTED CLASSIFICATION CODE (NEC) OPPORTUNITIES NEC/Course Title Course Location CIN/CSE ID B-300-0075 B-300-0001 B-300-2403 Course Length 110 days 365 days 138 days Camp Lejeune, NC or Camp Pendleton, CA Pensacola, FL Groton, CT Ft. This is a great opportunity to meet with your Mentor, Leading Petty Officer or Leading Chief Petty Officer to understand the importance of keeping your record up-to-date. Check the following three major sections to verify your Official Record: 1) BUPERS Online BUPERS Online (https://www.bol.navy.mil) is your main tool to ensure your record is up to date and helps you to be proactive in making the most of your promotion opportunity. You should review your; a) Official Military Personnel File (OMPF): All active duty and reserve personnel having a BOL account, a CAC (with appropriate certificates) and a CAC-enabled computer can now view their OMPF online by selecting the OMPF option on the BOL main menu page. This is the preferred method of obtaining OMPF information to eliminate the unnecessary time-lags caused by waiting days or weeks to receive a requested CD ROM. b) If Deployed: Click on “Request Record on CD” to order your Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). This must be accomplished four to six months before a board convenes, which will allow time for delivery and updating of your record if required. c) Check your Performance Summary Record (PSR) and Enlisted Summary Record (ESR) on https://www.bol.navy.mil click on “ODC, OSR, PSR, ESR” link 2) Electronic Service Record (ESR) Self-Service ESR: This can be viewed at (https://nsips.nmci.navy.mil) or on the Navy Standard Integrated Personnel System (NSIPS) ESR server onboard ship. 3) Electronic Training Jacket (ETJ) Log-on to Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) and review your entire ETJ making sure that each section is correct. If not click on "Data Problems" on bottom of each page which will guide you on how to make corrections or updates. The entire list, with book summaries and additional information is available at http://navyreading.dodlive.mil/ The CNO-PRP has been streamlined to make our Navy's reading program more interactive, affordable, and wherever possible, electronically accessible. To that end: a number of the titles will be available for free at the NKO portal at https://wwwa.nko.navy.mil Click on the reference tab, then e-library audio and e-books tab. In order to download books, an "overdrive" account is required. On the top right, click on the overdrive window, follow the prompts, then not only are the PRP books available, but hundreds of other items. Security restrictions preclude downloading via Navy owned computers, so downloading them to personally-owned devices will be required. 85 RECOMMENDED COMMUNITY READING Title Flags of our Fathers, by James Bradley Doc: Heroic Stories of Medics, Corpsmen, and Surgeons in Combat, by Mark R.
