The Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach: Understanding Helping Kids with Social, Emotional and Behavioral Challenges Friday, May 31, 2013 (Registration Deadline: Wednesday, May 22, 2013) P RESENTER Ross W. Greene, Ph.D., is the is the originator of the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) and author of The Explosive Child and Lost at School. He is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, on the professional staff at Cambridge Health Alliance, adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech, and Senior Lecturer in the school psychology program in the Department of Education at Tufts University. Dr. Green is the founder of the non-profit Lives in the Balance which disseminates the Collaborative Problem Solving model through no-cost web-based programming and provides support to and advocacy on behalf of caregivers of behaviorally challenged kids. He is also a researcher, consultant and national and international lecturer. O VERVIEW Dr. Greene’s CPS Approach was first described in his book, The Explosive Child, and more recently in his book, Lost at School. Based on neuroscience research over the past 30-40 years, the empirically-supported CPS Model posits that challenging behavior is the result of lagging cognitive skills, especially in the domains of flexibility / adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving. CPS helps adults and kids collaboratively solve the problems precipitating challenging behavior, while simultaneously teaching lagging skills. The model has been found to be highly effective in an array of settings, including families, general and special education schools, and in residential, inpatient and juvenile detention settings. O BJECTIVES At the conclusion of the workshop, you will be able to: • Describe how different explanations and interpretations of challenging child behavior can lead to dramatically different approaches and why conventional reward/punishment procedures ore often ineffective. • Identify and assess various cognitive skills central to adaptation to life’s challenges • Identify and prioritize unsolved problems precipitating challenging behavior • Utilize three basic mechanisms by which adults handle unsolved problems & unmet expectations • Explain how to effectively implement Plan B to solve problems, teach skills, & reduce the frequency/intensity of challenging behavior Q UESTIONS AND / OR WHO SHOULD ATTEND This intermediate level workshop is intended for psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, therapists, school personnel, case managers, rehabilitation counselors, and other human service professionals that work with children with social, emotional and behavioral challenges. 8 - 8:30 a.m. (EST) • A UXILIARY A IDS Registration, Continental Breakfast 8:30-10 a.m. • Understanding Challenging Behavior; The Spectrum of Looking Bad 10-10:10 a.m. - Break 10:10-12 noon • Identifying Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ANSUP), The Plan B Flow Chart 12 noon-1:15 p.m. Lunch (on your own) 1:15-2:15 p.m. • Overview of the Plans; The Empathy Step .2:15-2:25 p.m. - Break To register: contact Fran Howard, Workshop Registrar at (260) 482-9125, ext. 2019 For workshop questions: contact Gin Moore at (260) 482-9125, ext. 2188 Fax: (260) 481-2717 TDD: (260) 481-2730 E-Mail address: FHOWARD@PARKCENTER.ORG WORKSHOP LOCATION: S CHEDULE 2:25-4 p.m. • The Problem Step; The Invitation Step; Special Topics: Q & A Grand Wayne Center, 120 W.
