Significant opera/ng cost-‐savings poten/al Abundant Supply ! 100+ years of North American supply Validated Technology ! Mature, proven, safe and reliable Efficiency and Environmental Benefits ! Domes/c ! Reduced pollu/on, GHG emissions and noise What is Natural Gas? ! Naturally occurring fossil fuel ! Originates from plant and animal remains ! Renewable (e.g., landfills) ! Over 90 % methane: o The simplest hydrocarbon = clean burning o 1 carbon atom + 4 hydrogen atoms Typical Composition of Natural Gas Methane CH4 Ethane C 2H 6 Propane C 3H 8 Butane C4H10 Carbon Dioxide CO2 Oxygen O2 0-0.2% Nitrogen N2 0-5% Hydrogen sulphide H 2S 0-5% Rare gases A, He, Ne, Xe trace Source: NGSA 70-90% 0-20% 0-8% Natural Gas Fuel Proper/es ! Rela/vely low energy density compared with conven/onal transporta/on fuels ! Therefore must be compressed (CNG) or liquefied (LNG) in order to have sufficient energy for vehicle use ! Energy Density: o Petro-‐Diesel o Bio-‐Diesel o Ethanol 36 MJ/L 33 MJ/L 23 MJ/L o LNG (20 psig) 21 MJ/L o CNG (3000 psig) 7.5 MJ/L CNG and LNG CNG – Compressed Natural Gas ! Natural gas stored on the vehicle at high pressure in special reinforced containers o Public sta/ons – historically dispensed at 3,000 psi (regula/ons changing to allow 3,600 psi dispensing) o Private sta/ons – op/on to dispense at up to 3,600 psi LNG – Liquefied Natural Gas ! Natural gas cooled to -‐162 °C, becomes liquid ! Must be kept at this low temperature to remain liquid ! NGVs that use LNG incorporate systems to vaporize the liquid to a gaseous state for use in the engine o Therefore suited to vehicles with high daily mileage o LNG has greater energy density than CNG = improved range o Liquid form requires less weight and space for equivalent fuel storage than CNG Natural Gas Safety Natural gas is: ! Lighter than air (unlike propane) ! Non-‐toxic ! Inherently safer than liquid fuels such as gasoline or diesel: o Due to narrow flammability range and higher igni/on temperature o Will not pool or seep into the ground o Both CNG and LNG dissipate quickly in the event of an accident or leak o Will not corrode other materials or contaminate soil or groundwater o Odourized by local distribu/on company for ease of detec/on (CNG only) ATCO Gas Support !
