Science Starter #5 – 11/06/15 What is the main atmospheric reactant that is used in photosynthesis and what is the main atmospheric product made during photosynthesis? TURN IN LAB AND LETTERS ON FRONT TABLE Notes 4.3 Calvin Cycle (Light Independent) Stage 2 of photosynthesis CHAPTER 6 PG. 116-124 OVERVIEW OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS Calvin Cycle CO2 + ATP + NADPH C6H12O2 + ADP + NADP+ Calvin Cycle •The goal of the Calvin Cycle is to produce C6H12O6 (glucose) •Occurs in the stroma •Uses ATP and NADPH (from the Light Reaction) to convert CO2 to glucose (C6H12O6) •2 spins around cycle makes 1 molecule of glucose! Calvin Cycle Summary Reactants Products NADPH (from Light Reaction) NADP+ ATP (from Light Reaction) ADP CO2 C6H12O6 Check Notes 4.2 to see Light Reactions and how these two reactions are related to each other What is the glucose used for? Glucose can be used for: 1. Energy a) Mitochondria will break down glucose to create ATP for growth and development 2. Storage a) Excess glucose can be stored as starch and used later for energy Factors that Affect Photosynthesis 1. Temperature • As temperature increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases to a maximum and then decreases when temps get too hot. – The rate peaks at a certain temperature, at which many of the enzymes that catalyze the reactions become ineffective. Also, the stomata begin to close, limiting water loss and entry of carbon dioxide. Which graph represents the affect of temperature on the rate of photosynthesis? Draw this graph in your notes Factors that Affect Photosynthesis 2. Light Intensity •Rate of photosynthesis increases as light intensity increases •However, at some point all available e- are excited, and maximum rate of photosynthesis is reached Which of the graphs represents the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis? Draw the circled image in your notes Factors that Affect Photosynthesis 3. Carbon Dioxide Levels •Rate of photosynthesis increases as CO2 increases •However, at some point a maximum rate of photosynthesis is reached and any increase in CO2 will have no effect on photosynthesis rate Which of the graphs represents the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis? Draw the circled image in your notes Foldable Instructions On the bottom half of your foldable: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
