SCH4U: Grade 12 University Chemistry General Comments - Mr. Schinkel - Room 204 1. ATTENDANCE: It is important that you attend regularly. This course is sequential in development, so good attendance is necessary in order to avoid getting lost very quickly. If you are absent, you will NOT receive credit for missed work unless your parent or guardian telephones the school or writes a note upon your return to school. You are responsible for catching up on missed work. If you miss a test for a legitimate reason, you will be required to write the test at a mutually agreed time upon return to school. There are no make-up tests for a poor grade on a test. I will not remind you every day that you have work to make-up or a test to write - this is YOUR responsibility. If you miss a lab, you are still responsible to obtain the data and complete the write-up before the labs are marked and returned. Only one lab will be omitted (with a valid excuse); all other missed labs will be recorded as incomplete. A skipped lab or test will result in a mark of zero. Please refer to your student handbook for the complete attendance policy. 2. All hats and coats must be left in your locker. Bags must be well under your desk or at the back counter for those on the aisle. 3. Please bring a pen, pencil, ruler, notebook (with paper) and a scientific calculator to every class. 4. If you have any health problems such as an allergy, or you are taking medication on a regular basis, please discuss this with me. If you wear contact lenses please notify me and have your parent or guardian complete and sign the contact lens letter. 5. BEHAVIOUR: in a chemistry laboratory you must behave in a responsible manner. You must consider the safety of yourself, your lab partner and that of all other classmates. If you do not behave in a safe manner OR if you misbehave, you may be removed from the course. 6. It is recommended that you be competent in mathematics as this course involves considerable problem solving. If you find yourself having difficulties, see me ASAP. We can arrange a mutually convenient time to meet. Do not let yourself get behind. Always make an attempt on your own first, and then if you still need extra help, please let me know in advance. I’m always happy to help. 7. PUNCTUALITY: you are expected to arrive on time. Lateness shows disrespect for me and the class. If you are late, do not try to give an excuse. Enter quietly, sit down and get to work. I’ll discuss this with you if the need arises. If you need to sign out of my class you must bring me a demit slip from the office. 8. LATE ASSIGNMENTS: there are no marks deducted for late assignments. HOWEVER, the school has instituted a lunch time assignment room to which you will be assigned if you miss the due date. If you miss the “window of opportunity” (times between work assigned and work due) for a lab then you will need to develop an alternate assignment that is agreed upon by me and completed in the lunch time completion room. Lab reports are summative assignments. 9. I expect you to read your textbook and try the practice exercises on your own. You have the entire course laid out before you in this booklet so I strongly recommend you prepare yourself for each topic by reading the appropriate section in your text prior to the lesson and then again after the lesson if you need further clarification. Please make sure you are clear on points 7, 8 and 9. Good luck with the course! This course will demand extra work on your part, but if you are willing to do this, then you will be successful! p.s. start studying for the final exam now. 7 SCH 4U Course Profile Unit # 1 2 3 4 5 Unit Title Approx.Time (in hours) Review and Safety 3 Organic Chemistry 16 Structure and Properties of Matter 16 (There will be independent study in this section.) Energy Changes and Rates of Reaction 19 Chemical Systems and Equilibrium 32 Electrochemistry 18 Final Assessment Task 5 Final Exam 2* * I strongly recommend that you do not leave your exam preparation for the last minute. This exam requires serious study over an extended period of time. SCH 4U Course Evaluation Evaluation: Classroom work will represent 70% of your final grade in the course. The remaining 30% will be determined from your achievement on the final exam at the end of the course. Course evaluation will be based on the following: Knowledge and Understanding..................................................................... 25% (understanding concepts, facts, theories, laws and terms) Inquiry.......................................................................................................... 17% (labs, research, recoding, analyzing, use of equipment) Communication............................................................................................ 14% (relaying knowledge in a variety of formats, labs/projects/papers) Making Connections…................................................................................ 14% (relating science to technology and society, thinking beyond the basics) Final Evaluation......................................................................................... 30% Each student in (SCH 4U) will be assessed on 5 basic learning skills: * Ability to work independently *Teamwork * Organization * Work Habits * Initiative Note: Although you will not be solving the same problems in chemistry as you do in math, the thinking skills you develop in math will be critical to your success in chemistry. I cannot emphasize enough that math is extremely important in chemistry. The math requirements in chemistry 12 are even greater than the demands of the grade 11 course. If you have not completed a required summative assessment (other than a test), you must develop your own assignment that will cover the same learning objectives and is acceptable to me. All tests must be written to obtain course credit. Good luck! 8 Compulsory Summative Assignments/Evaluations: All lab reports Unit 2 – position paper Unit 3 – sewage or related topic research/poster Unit 4 – acid rain research, Ksp assignment Unit 5 – position paper Unit Tests & Final Exam *the above unit assignments (not tests and exam) are subject to change. If a student has not demonstrated achievement of the expectations of all compulsory summative assignments then the student may not receive the credit for this course. Late or Missing Work Once the “window of opportunity” closes, you will be assigned the lunch time supervision room. If a compulsory assignment (other than a test or quiz) has been missed (these are lab reports) the student can create a new evaluation, which is agreeable to the teacher, that meets all of the learning outcomes of the original assignment/evaluation. I will not accept work turned in after the same corrected assignments have been returned unless previous arrangements have been made. Corrections can be made on lab reports. A skip will be given a grade of zero, with no chance for a make-up. Plagiarism Plagiarism is a serious offence and will be dealt with very harshly. Consequences will be as follows: • On the first occurrence, the grade on the assignment is zero until the assignment is rewritten, or until a suitable alternative is arranged with the teacher (i.e., oral presentation). The teacher will inform the Vice-Principal, who will meet with the student. The student will be warned of suspension if other plagiarism occurs. • On the second occasion, the teacher will refer the student to the Vice-Principal. The student will be suspended, and the same academic consequence will apply (zero until assignment is redone). Parents/Guardians: Please sign this sheet to show that your child has shared this information with you. Also, please provide an email address for any future contact in case contact by phone is not possible. ___________________________________ _____________________________________ Parent/Guardian’s Signature Parent/Guardian’s Email Thank you.
