COURSE ABSTRACT
This course will give an overview of different topics and typical practical problems in
private international law and international civil procedure – all geared towards solving
legal problems in the real world of commercial cross border transactions within the
European Union. Each topic will have an initial phase of lecturing and in-depth
reading, followed by an interactive phase pursuant to the Socratic Method where the
students are supposed to come prepared to class and participate actively, e.g. by
discussing relevant topics and solving cases.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Understanding the legal background of private international law issues within the
framework of European Union law. Understanding the interplay between procedural,
substantive and conflict of laws rules. Moreover, finding an own point of view for
developing unique and creative legal approaches for solving particular cases.
