2003 Annual Report
Anticipation, Preparation Distinguish 2003
For Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation, 2003 was a year of expectation and preparation.
This Annual Report issue of Caring details some of our most important accomplishments,
made possible by the support of many generous and hard-working people. Please take time
to read this issue, giving particular attention to the distribution of funds in 2003. This is
what the Foundation is really all about.
You’ll also be interested in reading Doug McNeill’s Viewpoint, detailing plans for the new
Middletown Regional Hospital (MRH) and a proposed joint operating agreement with
Premier Health Partners, which operates Miami Valley and Good Samaritan hospitals in
Dayton. Foundation leadership believes this affiliation will be a winning proposition for
everyone, enabling us to build our new hospital with more comprehensive services,
advanced technology and healthcare choices for the 21st century.
DON L. PELFREY
Chairman
Mid-Miami Healthcare
Foundation Board of
Directors
As a friend of Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation, you may be wondering what this
decision means to you and your family. Since the joint operating agreement between MRH
and Premier is not a merger of assets, the Foundation will remain a separate 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization, governed by its own board of directors. All current and future
contributions to the Foundation — including annual, planned and major gifts — will
remain here for use in projects and programs that will benefit Middletown Regional Hospital
patients and our local communities. No monies go to Premier nor the Dayton community.
In 2003, the Foundation spent considerable time preparing for these announcements
concerning the new hospital. We also organized the Development Committee to plan
and oversee a capital campaign in support of the new facility. This committee includes
representatives from the Foundation, hospital and health system boards, as well as from
the medical staff and community. A feasibility study is now underway to determine the
size and timing of the campaign.
Amid these new endeavors, we have not neglected our core responsibilities. The Planned
Giving Committee had an extraordinarily successful annual seminar, which targeted
professionals who work with individuals on their estate plans. The group even had to
relocate to a larger facility this year due to the increased popularity of the seminar.
The Foundation’s 2003 annual fund campaign, “The Power of One,” exceeded its goal
for the seventh consecutive year. The Middletown Regional Hospital Auxiliary continued
their strong support, with countless volunteer hours and a $40,000 contribution. Chaired by
Rick and Saundra Pearce, the Charity Ball was also successful and beautiful, with proceeds
purchasing a much-needed digital EEG monitor for stroke diagnosis and treatment.
My thanks to the board, staff, and especially the volunteers and donors who worked
together to make 2003 a rewarding year!

2003 Year in Review
Foundation Touches Lives with
Technology, Training and Tender Care
When Aleena Agee was born with the rare
chromosome disorder Trisomy 18, there was no
question what the outcome would be. “Doctors
immediately told us her prognosis,” said Aleena’s
mother, Lori. “It was certain death.”
Aleena lived just 39 days—25 days longer than
Gary and Lori Agee’s first child, Jacob, born with a
heart defect in 1991. This time, thanks in part to
the HEAL Program (Help Endure A Loss) of
Middletown Regional Hospital, the experience
was very different.
“With Jacob, we spent every minute with him
but did not focus on making memories,”
Lori recalled. But after Aleena’s
diagnosis, Sheree Young, RN,
director of HEAL, came to the
grieving family’s side. Young
provided support, counseling
and countless ideas to help the
Agees not only survive the
tragedy, but also to celebrate
Aleena’s life.
“At a time when life leaves everyone
around you speechless, this organization comes in and knows what to say,”
said Lori. “When your child only has a
certain amount of time, you want to make
the most of those moments. HEAL enabled
us to have some wonderful times with our
daughter, to focus on every moment and
make memories. It helped us to live in a time
of great grief.”
The 39 days of Aleena Agee’s life were precious to
her family, thanks to support from MRH’s
HEAL Program (Help Endure a Loss).
“Whether a gift was large or
small, it’s already making a
difference to one of your friends
or neighbors,” Pelfrey said. “I can
think of no better investment in
this region and its families.”
At a celebration event held Tuesday,
February 24, hospital and Foundation
representatives thanked all of the donors
and volunteers who helped make
2003 a success. Among those
recognized were “Power of
One” co-chairs Joe Bidwell
and William Andrew, MD; business
committee co-chairs Mike Long,
Jim Kleingers and Joe Kramer; and employee
campaign co-chairs Deborah Tibbs, RN, and
Kevin Uhler. The “Power of One” campaign
raised more than $156,000 to continue the work
accomplished in seven annual campaigns, which
supported diabetes, heart care, kidney failure,
pediatrics and trauma.
The Power
of One
Making a Difference,
Close to Home
The Agees are just one family touched by
generous contributions to Mid-Miami Healthcare
Foundation in 2003. Last year the Foundation
raised nearly $500,000 (including AK Steel
Foundation’s final pledge payment of $125,000)
for the purpose of “touching lives and improving
health” throughout the Middletown Regional
Hospital service area. According to Don L. Pelfrey,
chairman of the Foundation board, those dollars
are already at work in the hospital and community,
providing advanced technology, medical education,
wellness programs and caring services like HEAL.
Although annual giving campaigns like these may
be the most visible activities of Mid-Miami
Healthcare Foundation, there were other ways to
support the Foundation in 2003. “Many people
who share our vision of ensuring top-quality
healthcare for our region are choosing to designate
the Foundation in their wills or estate plans,”

said Linda Baxter, executive director. “The
Foundation raises funds through a variety of
planned giving options, grant opportunities, major
gifts and gifts in honor or memory of a loved one.”
A new tradition at Middletown Regional Hospital is
the Foundation’s Holiday Giving Tree. Through
their generous response to the annual Holiday
Giving Tree mailing, year-end donors provided toys
for sick children to play with as they wait to see a
physician or if they feel frightened by a procedure.
“The Foundation will always play an important
role in bringing this region the best medical care
because there are many components that cannot
be covered by insurance or patient fees,” said
Douglas W. McNeill, president and CEO of
Middletown Regional Health System. “Advanced
technologies like the handheld ultrasound, free
vaccinations for low-income families, heart failure
education, and toys for anxious children are some
of the things we could not offer without the help
of those who believe in our mission.”
Gathered to view new surgical instruments donated by the
Piccioni Family Foundation are Margot Daugherty, RN,
trauma nurse coordinator; Pat and Karen Piccioni and family;
Doug McNeill, president and CEO, Middletown Regional
Health System; and Mike Long, Foundation board member.
Jennie Schumpp, executive director, CareView Home Health,
joins Bernhard Wright, Jr., and Michael Foley from The Loeb
Foundation, which helped to fund Home Telehealth units.
Major Gifts from
Foundation Friends
Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation is deeply
grateful to several contributors who made major
gifts in 2003. The Piccioni Family Foundation
contributed $30,000 to equip the Trauma Center
with state-of-the-art surgical instruments used
to repair crushed and broken bones. Member
volunteers of the MRH Auxiliary donated $40,000
to provide seven Home TeleHealth Program
units for in-home patient monitoring; software,
technology and educational materials for the
Diabetes Wellness Center; and support for the
HEAL Program. Since its founding in the 1920s,
the Auxiliary has raised nearly $1.4 million
for the hospital.
With proceeds from their annual Charity Ball,
the Middletown Area Federation of Women’s
Clubs purchased an advanced digital EEG monitor
for stroke diagnosis and treatment—a growing
need in Butler, Warren, Preble and southern
Montgomery counties. Over 83 years, the
Federation has raised more than $860,800 to
benefit the health system and community through
the Charity Ball.
Other major contributors include:
• Foundation for Healthy Communities,
sponsored by Ohio Hospital Association,
which helped the Maternal Child Health
Center provide low- or no-cost examinations,
vaccinations and medications to children
and mothers in need
• Robert H. Reakirt Foundation, PNC Bank,
Trustee, which purchased portable imaging
technology for the Trauma Center

• Loeb Foundation, a trust managed by Lebanon
Citizens National Bank, which purchased
Home TeleHealth monitoring units
• Middletown Community Foundation, which
also provided Home TeleHealth technology.
“These organizations have helped us raise the bar
on patient care by addressing some of our community’s most pressing health needs,” said McNeill.
“We are extremely thankful for their support.”
Handheld Imaging Technology
Speeds Diagnosis, Improves Care
By Daniel Butler, MD, FACS, MRH Trauma Medical Director
In the age of cordless phones,
laptop computers and wireless
communication, we often take for
granted the benefits of compact
size and portability in the things
we use every day. But for the

the resuscitation of patients whose
lives hang in the balance, ease of
use and portability can mean the
difference between life and death.

With the availability of a new,
hand-carried ultrasound unit, the
FAST exam has become a safe,
accurate and non-invasive procedure
that provides a way to improve the
cost-effectiveness of trauma care.
Now this lifesaving technology is
available at Middletown Regional
Hospital, improving the care of
trauma patients.

By providing the handheld ultrasound, the

Reakirt Gift Helps Patients Survive Trauma
Cincinnati native Robert H. Reakirt had a strong inclination
toward benevolence, especially toward organizations promoting
patriotism and self-reliance. “Having accumulated his wealth
through commercial real estate ownership in downtown
Cincinnati, Bob received great satisfaction doing things that helped
people—like providing canoes when the Boy Scouts needed them,”
recalled Jim Huizenga, vice president, PNC Advisors.
After Reakirt’s passing in 1971, the Robert H. Reakirt Foundation
was established to continue his charitable work. Last year’s decision
to award the MRH Trauma Center $47,000 for handheld imaging
technology would have pleased Bob Reakirt, said Huizenga.
“Middletown Regional Hospital holds a critical place in providing
healthcare for a booming part of southwestern Ohio, and the
population relying on its services spans a wide geographic area.
When we learned of the critical nature of this equipment and the
difference it can make in diagnosing emergency patients, we knew
the people of the region needed it—especially those who travel a
considerable distance for trauma care.”

Plans for New Hospital Take Shape
Viewpoint by Douglas W. McNeill, FACHE,
President and CEO, Middletown Regional Health System
The dawn of a new era has come to Middletown
and southwest Ohio as the vision of the new
Middletown Regional Hospital rapidly takes shape.
Culminating three years of extensive study and
public input, guided by the mission of securing
the most modern healthcare available for our
region, this new facility will offer the community
greater access to more sophisticated healthcare,
including more physicians and specialists, than
ever before. It will also allow MRH to grow
effectively and adjust to rapid changes in
manpower, treatment, technology and emerging
specializations within the healthcare industry.
Integral to our plan for the rapid implementation
of our 21st century hospital is an exciting new
joint operating agreement with Premier Health
Partners, the parent organization operating
Miami Valley and Good Samaritan hospitals.
This partnership, if approved as planned this
summer, will provide $80 million in investment
capital for our new campus and will result in
Middletown Regional Hospital becoming the
third hospital in the Premier network.
By combining our strengths with this wellrespected system, we will achieve operating
efficiencies that would be nearly impossible for
us to create on our own, especially in the areas
of purchasing and technology. Our alliance with
Premier will also allow us to build the hospital
more quickly and with a greater expansion of
services than we would be able to provide on
our own.
Located less than a quarter mile from I-75,
northeast of the Union Road and Route 122
intersection (only four miles from our current
site), the new Middletown Regional Hospital will
be a full-service, acute care facility with expanded
services in the areas of cardiology (including
open heart procedures), oncology, surgery and
trauma. Current plans call for the new hospital
to open in 2008.
The innovative design and construction will also
allow MRH to offer more advanced technology
such as upgraded linear accelerator capabilities to
facilitate a wider range of cancer treatments, a
PET scanner for total body scans, and the ability
to perform virtual colonoscopy procedures.
None of these capabilities are possible at our
current location.
The hospital will be one component of a 200-acre
medical and technology campus, which will
incorporate trees, ponds and walking trails to

Foundation
create a healing, warm
environment. Phase I
of the three-phase
development will
encompass
construction of:
• The new hospital
• A medical office building for physicians,
specialists and support services
• New outpatient services: Cancer Center,
Surgery Center, Cardiology Center
• Greentree Health Science Academy
In Phase II, we expect to add a variety of
partnerships, including the development of a
campus YMCA, a senior living community, and
children’s services provided by the children’s
hospitals of Dayton and Cincinnati. Phase III
will include possible partnerships to develop a
conferencing center and to accommodate
researchers in the regional medical community.
There is much work to be done between now and
mid-2005, when we plan to break ground for the
new Cancer Center and begin construction. We
are deeply grateful for all of the ways you have
supported Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation, and
want to reassure you that all current and future
contributions to the Foundation will remain here
for use in projects and programs that will benefit
MRH patients and our local communities. The
Foundation will remain a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, governed by its own board of
directors. As always, none of the money raised by
the Foundation is used for its operating expenses.
This is an exciting time in our hospital’s history.
We value your support as we seek to ensure the
most advanced and innovative health care for you
and those you love!
