grandfather & grandmother rocks
Mother nature indeed has a sense of humor!
These rocks at the south of Lamai beach have
been shaped over millions of years by wind and
water to resemble human reproductive organs.
They are set on a beautiful coast lined with gigantic
rocks that form inviting shallow pools in between.
Because of their shape, the rocks are seen as
strong fertility symbols and said to be the origin of
the 'Mui' peoples.
Apparently, couples that are trying to have a
baby should come here for positive vibrations &
good energy that will help the woman conceive.
In local legend the rocks apparently appeared
after two lovers drowned themselves in the sea
because their families disapproved of their
relationship .
8
waterfalls
Namuang Waterfalls so called because the rock
face is purple. The waterfalls are located 10 km
south from Nathon at Ban Thurian.
There are 2 waterfalls.
Namuang is 18 meters high and can be
reached by vehicle.
Namuang II is Koh Samui’s most beautiful, largest
and most impressive waterfall, with stunning
rock formations and verdant surroundings
bathed in a brilliant natural light.
Namuang II consist of two separate falls, one with
a 20m drop and a good pool for swimming
and the other with an 80m drop.
The waterfall can be reached only by a short
and interesting jungle walk on foot or on
top of a friendly elephant.
9
magic garden
High in the hills that rise from the forested interior of
the island, lies an art gallery extraordinary in
many ways.
The inspiration and creation of Nim Thongsuk, this
son of 4 generations of Samuians decided at
the age of 77, to create a little piece of
heaven on earth in the hope that many
of the increasing number tourists would
appreciate not only his vision, but the
extraordinary beauty of the
island's hilltop forests.
10
hua thanon market
Hua Thanon, which starts just beyond Hin Ta & Hin
Yai, is quiet and is home to Samui's last remaining
traditional fishing fleets. The Muslim village has a
charming atmosphere and is well worth a visit
for a glimpse into island life before
mass tourism.
The fishermen's elegantly painted kor lae boats are
very photogenic, as is the village's fish market.
There are a few decent seafood restaurants
by the side of the sea, which give you a
taste of true Samui cuisine at bargain
basement prices.
11
fisherman village
Fisherman's Village is fast gaining a reputation that
stretches way beyond Samui for being the most
elegant and well-preserved place on the island.
Lined by old wooden Chinese shop-houses,
interspaced with a few modern buildings that
match the tone, it retains a distinctly Mediterranean
feel. This has probably got a lot to do with the fact
that it was the main French outpost on the island
for many years.
Every Friday, fisherman village becomes a
walking street with a great market
atmosphere - a must see.
12
big buddha
On the northern coast of Koh Samui is the famous
Big Buddha shrine. Probably Samui's most well
known landmark, the 12 metre high
golden Buddha can be seen from
several kilometres away.
Inside the surrounding temple are many
different shrines and other smaller
ornate Buddhas.
There is also a small market selling a wide
range of lucky charms and other souvenirs,
alongside numerous food stalls.
13
wat plai laem
Located near the Big Buddha in the north of the
island, Wat Plai Leam is a colourful and interesting,
newly constructed Buddhist Temple.
The temple features very ornate decor and art,
an 18-arm image of Guanyin - the Goddess of
Mercy - and a large white Chinese Buddha
set on the lake.
If you donate money for the upkeep of the temple
you'll be given a bag of food to throw to the
teeming fish in the lake.
14
mummified monk
Mummified Monk (at Wat Khunaram)
The only mummy we have ever seen that wears
sunglasses!
Luong Por Daeng was a highly respected monk
when he died over 35 years ago.
A native of Koh Samui he enjoyed a long prosperous
family life until he was 50 years old when he decides
to devote the last part of his life to the monk hood.
After being ordain in 1944, he became renown for
his meditation practice for about 20 years.
He was also able to foresee his own death
in1973 when he was 79 years old.
Today, he can still be seen in the exact same
meditative position he was in when he died.
15
laem sor pagoda
This pagoda is to be found at the southern most tip
of Koh Samui, which is also the end of
Bang Kao Beach.
Its golden hue, glowing in the sunlight, makes for an
astonishingly beautiful contrast to the Columbia
blue sky and the turquoise sea behind it.
The entrance is guarded by two 'Yak' (meaning
giant) warrior statues with immense swords,
colourful clothing and scary faces.
Buddha stands in the doorway to the rear of
the statues.
This one is always a great photo opportunity as
there is absolutely nothing obstructing your
view and it all fits on one photograph.
It's located eleven kilometres
south of Lamai.
16
overlap stone
It is a challenge to get up to these impressive balanced boulders, but the spectacular views on
arrival make it worthwhile for the adventurous
traveller.
The steep, rough, dirt-track road leading to the
viewpoint should only be attempted on a dirt
bike or with a 4x4, and the last stretch may
have to be walked, depending on conditions.
Alternatively it is a hard 20-minute climb on foot,
but there is a refreshment stall at the top and it
is an exhilarating experience.
17
ang thong marine park
The setting for the eponymous 'perfect' beach in
Alex Garland's book, Anthong really was once
home to a group of travellers who'd permanently
dropped out of society. They've now moved
on to Koh Pha Ngan, but Ang Thong
remains as stunning as ever.
Exuding a primordial beauty, the park's 42 jungleshrouded islands are inhabited by a variety of
wildlife, including langurs and macaques.
Many have spectacular rock formations,
secret caves and hidden lagoons.
One of the islands, Koh Mae, or Island Mother,
contains an unusual saltwater lake hidden
inside a hill in the landscape.
18
koh phangan
Although justly famous for its Full Moon Parties, Ko
Phangan has a lot more to offer visitors than all
night dancing. There are few day trip options from
Koh Samui, apart from sailing cruises, so at least an
over night stay is recommended.
Ko Phangan is at least ten years behind Samui in
terms of development, which lends the island a
lot of charm, and some would say it's more
picturesque than Samui itself.
The main tourist beach Haad Rin is busiest on
Full Moon nights, but is well worth a visit the rest
of the month too for its chaotic jumble of bars,
clubs, restaurants and handicraft shops.
The locals - expats and Thais alike - are a friendly
bunch and help make the atmosphere a lot
more laid back than frenetic Chaweng.
19
koh tao — koh nang yuan
Once the haunt of sea-turtles, this small island north
of Koh Samui with its quiet undisturbed beaches
has become a magnet for those who really
want to get away from it all and for divers
who come to view the colourful coral beds.
Since the main attraction is diving - the beaches
remain tranquil and uncrowded while facilities,
food and accommodation have
greatly improved.
Koh Nang Yuan with its crystal clear water
comprises of three smaller islands connected by
sandbanks and is only 15 minutes from Koh Tao.
20
koh tan –koh mutsum
Koh Tan makes a fine day trip from Samui. Located
just 2km. from the southern end of Koh Samui,
Koh Tan, or "Koh Katen", as it is sometimes known,
offers a long sandy beach and good oral
off the eastern and southern coasts.
It is surrounded by four other little islands that also
await exploration. If you get tired of sunbathing,
diving and snorkeling, there's always hiking,
fishing, bat caves and just plain
sight-seeing.
Next-by is Koh Matsum, home of the Naga pearl
farm for shell culturing.
21
five islands
Discover a world of simplicity and style, where you
can experience the true beauty and charm of
Koh Samui.
The Five islands are known locally as the “Four
Islands-Five Islands” as one island is hidden
behind another when viewed form the shore.
These islands are protected by sea gypsy
guards as they are famous for their bird’s nests
found within the caves and craggy rocks.
The tour will evoke a sense of awe and beauty
to take with you on your voyage back to a
delicious lunch or sunset dinner at the
five Islands restaurant.

at any travel agent.

is moving forward. The island's first and currently
only, professional standard golf course,
opened in 2003 offering a gorgeous location
in the hills above Maenam.
If you prefer something less challenging, there's
always mini-golf.

course landscaped on the mountain of Koh Samui.

cabaret show
Ladyboy Cabarets might not be everyones cup of
tea but for the fans among you, Chaweng beach
has plenty to choose from! Thailand's Katoeys
or the third sex are world famous, partly
because there are so many of them and
also because they are so feminine.
In fact it can be difficult to tell if the beautiful
young lady paying you attention was a lady
at birth... as many an unfortunate tourist
has discovered!
