An excellent resource to help identify your child’s learning style, a description of how the homework brain works and strategies for addressing each homework subject are all included in this detailed, comprehensive book. (Reference 1) ***** Discover Your Child’s Learning Style by Mariaemma Willis M.S. and Victoria Kindle Hodson, M.A., 1999, Prima Publishig. gAnother excellent book that helps you assess not only your child’s learning style, but their talents, strengths and interests so you can “rekindle or fuel the self-directed, eager learner in your child.” Many excellent learning tools/resources are also provided. (Reference 2) * Taming the Homework Monster: How to Make Homework a Positive Learning Experience for Your Child Ellen Klavan, 1992, Poseidon Press.This book has helpful ideas for each grade (K-6) on how to reinforce math, reading, science, social studies and writing skills. Ending the Homework Wars Marguerite C. Radencich, Ph.D. and Jeanne Shay Schumm, Ph.D., 1988, Free Spirit Publishing Inc. This book offers help with specific subjects for parents of 6-13 year olds. It has a variety of excellent forms to help a child organize their work for book reports, term papers and other projects. Seven Steps to Homework Success: A Family Guide to Solving Common Homework Problems, Sydney S. Zentall, Ph.D., and Sam Goldstein, Ph.D., 1999, Specialty Press. The authors outline 11 common homework problems and offer advice on solving them. They also suggest setting up a “Learning Station” and give details on how to do that. Homework Without Tears: A Parent’s Guide for Motivating Children to Do Homework and to Succeed in School, Lee Canter and Lee Hausner, Ph.D., 1987, Harper and Row. This book has some great ideas on how to make homework fun. There are also a lot of good checklists, such as a “Proofreading Checklist” for kids to use to check their written reports. The book is also laid out well for busy parents to do a quick read.
