Marissa Howard/MDN "If you can get into ownership at a young age, you do it," said Don Hummel. "I was familiar with running a hamburger restaurant so it was an easy choice. The Burger King we opened was the first drivethrough fast food hamburger restaurant in Minot." The second Burger King, located in Dakota Square Mall, opened in 1990. The opportunity that presented itself, said Don Hummel, was too good to pass up. "It's been a great location for us," said Don Hummel. "Business is very good at both locations and we have constant growth in our industry and in our Burger King restaurants." Josh Hummel, current owner and director of operations and a Minot native as well, started working at Burger King when he was just 14 http://www.minotdailynews.com/page/content.detail/id/622873/Going-local.html?nav=5002 6/22/2015 Going local - MinotDailyNews.com | News, sports, business, jobs - Minot Daily News Page 2 of 3 years old, making his total employment at Burger King an impressive 23 years to date. "I've done every job at Burger King that you can think of over the years," said Josh Hummel. "I started working there just a few days after I turned 14 so I've been there for pretty much as long as I had the chance to." Burger King runs even further into the family, as Don Hummel's wife, Sherry Hummel, is the assistant secretary and assistant treasurer of the corporation. She has been with the company "ever since I opened the first Burger King in Minot," Don Hummel said. Josh Hummel's sister, Monica Haugen, even worked at Burger King for six or seven years in the past. With such a tight-knit board of ownership, Don and Josh Hummel have been known to treat employees like family as well. "We're very people-oriented, and we have to be because without employees there is no business," said Josh Hummel. "We're proud that we've been able to attain so many long-time employees, because that is not very common in this industry. We feel like it's because we treat them like family." Don Hummel nodded. "The most important thing is that we get to be with people every day, and most days it's even fun." He finished with a laugh. Of the 45-50 employees total at both Burger King locations, around 10 have been employees for 15 years or longer. Dan Olson, restaurant manager at the Burger King on South Broadway, is in his 38th year working for the company. Michael Tickerhoof, restaurant manager at the Burger King in Dakota Square Mall, has worked for the company since April 2007. Josh Hummel explained that the number is a testament to how they strive to treat their employees. "There are thousands of people who have worked for us over the years and I see many of them every day," said Don Hummel. "It's these connections that we have with the community that you don't get any other way." Other goals of the Hummels include providing a quality dining experience for customers, developing community leaders, providing a positive and fun environment for the team and for customers and encouraging their Burger King team to be involved in the community. Walking into the Burger King on South Broadway, the walls are covered with colorful plaques that read, "Why Not Minot," "Minot: The Magic City," "North Dakota State Fair," and even some plaques and frames rooting for the Minot State University Beavers and the Minot High School Magicians. Community is, in a sense, written all over the restaurant. The importance of community in the Burger King restaurants in Minot began deep in the Hummels' roots. Josh Hummel is president of the Minot coin club, active in his church and helps coach his son's sports teams, among other involvements, while Don Hummel is or has been a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church Foundation, the Trinity Foundation, the Board of Regents at Minot State University, a Y's Men's Club member, a chairman of the Minot Planning Commission and more. And, Don Hummel said, Burger King has been there through it all. "It's been my job and my whole life," said Don Hummel. "It's been there through my married life, my kids were brought up in it. I've seen the changes, the ups and downs that we have been there for through the years, and we love what we do." Josh Hummel said his experience with Burger King has been rewarding both mentally and emotionally, and in the future hopes to open a third Burger King in Minot, the previous third restaurant having been destroyed in the flood. Both Josh and Don Hummel expect to be with Burger King for a long time still, and the business may even continue in the family in the far future as Josh Hummel's 10-year-old son Parker dressed up as a Burger King manager on career day at his school. "I'll support my kids no matter what they want to do, but if they decide to follow the Burger King path, I think it'd be great." http://www.minotdailynews.com/page/content.detail/id/622873/Going-local.html?nav=5002 6/22/2015 Going local - MinotDailyNews.com | News, sports, business, jobs - Minot Daily News Page 3 of 3 Save | Comments (1) | Post a comment | R!!!! ! !!d Be the first of your friends to recommend this. 0 Subscribe to Minot Daily News Minot Daily New s 301 4th St SE , Minot, ND 58703 | 701-857-1900 © 2015.
