Welcome to the Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of St. Peter in Exeter, founded in 1050, received a new
Constitution and Statutes in 2001 under which the Cathedral was reestablished with three main bodies: the Chapter which is charged with the
responsibility of running the Cathedral; the Council which is established to give
advice and to consider any revision to the Constitution and Statutes; and the
College of Canons which is also an advisory body reflecting the wider life of the
diocese. Together these form the Body Corporate of the Cathedral.
Dame Sarah, a former nurse, gave distinguished service in the NHS before
ordination, culminating in her appointment as the government’s Chief Nursing
Officer for England in 1999, when she was the youngest person to be appointed
to the post. She became a Christian as a teenager and her relationship with, and
understanding of God has shaped her life including her vocation as nurse and
priest.
She was ordained in 2001 and served her curacy in St Saviour’s Battersea Fields,
initially as a self-supporting minister. She left her post as Chief Nursing Officer
in 2004 to take up full time ministry becoming a Team Rector in Sutton, Surrey
in 2006 where she also became Borough Dean and Assistant Area Dean. In
2012 she was installed as Canon Treasurer at Salisbury Cathedral. Sarah is an
appointed member of the Dioceses Commission and she was made a Dame
Commander of the British Empire in 2005 in recognition of her outstanding
contribution to nursing and midwifery.
Sarah is married to Eamonn and they have two children, Grace and Liam. She
was consecrated Bishop of Crediton on the 22nd July 2015 at Canterbury
Cathedral.

Ceremonies in the Chapter House
The Bishop and the College of Canons, with the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury,
proceed to the Chapter House.
The Dean acting as President of the College of Canons then nominates the
Installers of the new Bishop.
The Bishop of Crediton makes the customary Declaration of Assent, the
Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen, and the Oath of Canonical
Obedience to the Bishop of Exeter.
The Dean says
Will the Virger ascertain if there are any contumacious persons
without?
Having drawn back the wicket and looked without, the Virger says
All is well without, Mr Dean.
The Dean says
Let the great doors be opened.
The assembled company leaves the Chapter House and proceeds to the
Cathedral through Bishop Brewer’s Door.
The congregation stands at the entrance of the choir and ministers.

Hymn
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim
till all the world adore his sacred Name.
Come, let us follow where our captain trod,
our king victorious, Christ the Son of God.
Lift high...
O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,
as thou hast promised, draw us unto thee:
Lift high...
Let every race and every language tell
of him who saves our souls from death and hell:
Lift high...
From farthest regions let their homage bring,
and on his cross adore their saviour king:
Lift high...
Set up thy throne, that earth's despair may cease
beneath the shadow of its healing peace:
Lift high...
For thy blest cross which doth for all atone
creation's praises rise before thy throne:
Lift high…
Words: G.W. Kitchin 1827-1912 and M.R. Newbolt 1874-1956
Tune: Crucifer

Bidding Prayer
We have come together in God’s presence
to offer him our worship and praise,
to hear and receive his holy word,
and to pray for his blessing on our work in his name.
In particular, we have come to welcome
Sarah as Bishop of Crediton and to install her
as a member of the College of Canons of this Cathedral Church.
Let us pledge ourselves to work with her
in the building up of God’s people,
and in responding to the opportunities and challenges around us.
In this work we acknowledge that the power and the glory
belong to God, who invites us to share in the fulfilment of his purposes.
Let us pray that God will strengthen us in his service.
Silence is kept.
God our Father, Lord of all the world,
we thank you that through your Son
you have called us into the fellowship of your universal Church.
Hear our prayer for your faithful people,
that in their vocation and ministry
each may be an instrument of your love,
and give your servant, Sarah,
the needful gifts of grace;
through our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
The choir sings the Preces and Responses to the setting by Bernard Rose.
V.
R.
O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
V.
R.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
V.
R.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
5
V.
R.
Praise ye the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.
The congregation sits. The choir sings
Psalm 65
Te decet hymnus
Thou, O God, art praised in Sion:
and unto thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem.
2
Thou that hearest the prayer:
unto thee shall all flesh come.
3
My misdeeds prevail against me:
O be thou merciful unto our sins.
4
Blessed is the man, whom thou choosest, and receivest unto
thee:
he shall dwell in thy court, and shall be satisfied with the pleasures
of thy house, even of thy holy temple.
5
Thou shalt shew us wonderful things in thy righteousness, O
God of our salvation:
thou that art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of them
that remain in the broad sea.
6
Who in his strength setteth fast the mountains:
and is girded about with power.
7
Who stilleth the raging of the sea:
and the noise of his waves, and the madness of the people.
8
They also that dwell in the uttermost parts of the earth shall be
afraid at thy tokens:
thou that makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to
praise thee.
9
Thou visitest the earth, and blessest it:
thou makest it very plenteous.
10
The river of God is full of water:
thou preparest their corn, for so thou providest for the earth.
11
Thou waterest her furrows, thou sendest rain into the little
valleys thereof:
thou makest it soft with the drops of rain, and blessest the
increase of it.
12
Thou crownest the year with thy goodness:
and thy clouds drop fatness.
13
They shall drop upon the dwellings of the wilderness:
and the little hills shall rejoice on every side.
6
14
The folds shall be full of sheep:
the valleys also shall stand so thick with corn, that they shall laugh
and sing.
The congregation stands.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
The congregation sits.
The First Lesson
Isaiah 43:1-10
But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my sight,
and honoured, and I love you,
I give people in return for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
Do not fear, for I am with you;
I will bring your offspring from the east,
and from the west I will gather you;
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’,
and to the south, ‘Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away
and my daughters from the end of the earth everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.’
7
Bring forth the people who are blind, yet have eyes,
who are deaf, yet have ears!
Let all the nations gather together,
and let the peoples assemble.
Who among them declared this,
and foretold to us the former things?
Let them bring their witnesses to justify them,
and let them hear and say, ‘It is true.’
You are my witnesses, says the LORD,
and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed,
nor shall there be any after me.
Here ends the First Lesson.
Magnificat
The congregation stands. The choir sings the Magnificat from the setting
written by Herbert Howells for the choir of King’s College, Cambridge.
My soul doth magnify the Lord :
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded :
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth :
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me :
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him :
throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm :
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat :
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things :
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel :
as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.
8
The congregation sits.
The Second Lesson
1 Corinthians 12:12-end
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members
of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the
one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or
free - and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the
foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’,
that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear were
to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would
not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye,
where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where
would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in
the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member,
where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one
body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, nor again
the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, the
members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and
those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe
with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with
greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need
this.
But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the
inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but
the members may have the same care for one another. If one member
suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice
together with it.
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And
God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third
teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance,
forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all
prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts
of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the
greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.
Here ends the Second Lesson.

Nunc Dimittis
The congregation stands. The choir sings
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace :
according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen : thy salvation;
Which thou hast prepared : before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles :
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
The Apostles’ Creed
All remain standing and say the Creed together.
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth:
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The choir sings
V.
R.
The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.
10
The congregation sits or kneels.
Let us pray.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Our Father,
which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
V.
R.
O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.
And grant us thy salvation.
V.
R.
O Lord, save the Queen.
And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
V.
R.
Endue thy ministers with righteousness.
And make thy chosen people joyful.
V.
R.
O Lord, save thy people.
And bless thine inheritance.
V.
R.
Give peace in our time, O Lord.
Because there is none other that fighteth for us,
but only thou, O God.
V.
R.
O God, make clean our hearts within us.
And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
11
The Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith,
hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost
promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect for Peace
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just
works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the
world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy
commandments, and also that, by thee, we being defended from
the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
The Collect for Aid against all Perils
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great
mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the
love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
The congregation sits. The choir sings
Anthem
Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks :
so longeth my soul after thee, O God.
My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God :
when shall I come to appear before the presence of God?
My tears have been my meat day and night :
while they daily say unto me, where is now thy God?

The Presentation
The Bishop moves to the Nave Altar. The Bishop of Crediton is brought by the
Installers and presented to the Bishop.
Right Reverend Father in God, we present to you Sarah Elisabeth
Mullally, ordained as Bishop of Crediton.
12
The Bishop says
Sarah, I have called the Diocese to respond to the love of God by
growing in prayer, by making new disciples and by serving the people of
Devon with joy. As Bishop of Crediton, will you share with me and with
Bishop Nick in leading the people of God in this mission?
By God’s help, I will.
The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter is the seat of the Bishop and a
centre of worship, mission and teaching. Members of the College of
Canons have a responsibility to support the life of prayer of the
Cathedral in their private devotions and in its corporate acts of worship;
they are to promote its mission in the Diocese.
Are you willing, the Lord being your helper,
to accept this responsibility?
I am.
Will you be reverent and faithful in the worship of almighty God in this
place?
By God’s help, I will.
All stand.
The Bishop addresses the congregation
My sisters and brothers, will you support Sarah in her ministry as Bishop
of Crediton? Will you pray for her regularly and work with her in
proclaiming the Gospel to all people?
By God’s help, we will.
The Bishop addresses the Chapter
Will you continue to work with Sarah in promoting the vision and
mission of the Cathedral within the Diocese?
By God’s help, we will.
The Bishop addresses the College of Canons
Members of the College of Canons, will you encourage Sarah in her
work as Bishop of Crediton and support her with your prayer.
By God’s help, we will.
13
And to Sarah he says
May God, who has given you grace to make these promises, give you
strength to fulfil them with faith, hope and love.
Amen.
The Giving of the Mandate for the Installation
The Bishop gives Sarah the Mandate requesting and directing the Chapter to
install her.
Mr Dean, having welcomed this our sister Sarah for her work as a
Suffragan Bishop and a Member of the College of Canons, I ask you to
install her in the Quire of our Cathedral Church.
The Dean responds
I will gladly do so and I invite our sister to make the customary promise
of Fidelity to the Cathedral Foundation and take her rightful place among
us according to the ancient traditions of this Cathedral Church.
During the following hymn, the Bishop and College of Canons proceed to
the Quire.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
my God and King.
The heavens are not too high,
his praise may thither fly,
the earth is not too low,
his praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
my God and King!
Let all the world in every corner sing,
my God and King.
The church with psalms must shout,
no door can keep them out;
but above all the heart
must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
my God and King!
Words: George Herbert (1593-1633)
Tune: Luckington

The congregation sits.
Placing her hand on the Book of the Gospels, the Bishop of Crediton says
I, Sarah Elisabeth Mullally, promise that I will serve this Cathedral Church
of St Peter in Exeter in my ministry as a Suffragan Bishop and a Member
of the College of Canons with faithfulness in worship, devotion in
service, honesty of endeavour, and with reverence and love for all God's
people; in obedience to its Constitution and Statutes, and in witness to
the faith of Jesus Christ our Lord; So help me God and these Holy
Gospels.
She signs the Cathedral Book of Oaths.
The College of Canons stands, the Bishop and congregation remain seated.
The Installers bring the Bishop of Crediton to the Dean, who inspects the
Mandate and says
By virtue of the mandate from the Right Reverend Father in God,
Robert, by Divine Permission Lord Bishop of Exeter, we install you,
Sarah Mullally, Clerk, duly and lawfully ordained to the office and dignity
of Bishop of Crediton with all and singular the rights, members and
appurtenances thereunto belonging, together with a place and voice in
the College of Canons of this Cathedral Church appertaining to your
office. We assign you the stall of Bishop Eadwulf in the Quire. In the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Installers place the Bishop of Crediton in her customary stall, saying
May the Lord preserve your going out and your coming in
And the members of the College of Canons say
From this time forth for evermore. Amen.
The Bishop of Crediton kneels and says the Lord’s Prayer.
Our Father,
which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come;
15
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
The College responds
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The congregation stands to sing the following hymn, during which the
Bishop and College of Canons return to the Nave.
Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing:
Christ over all, our undivided aim.
Fire of the Spirit, burn for our enduing,
wind of the Spirit, fan the living flame!
We turn to Christ amid our fear and failing,
the will that lacks the courage to be free,
the weary labours, all but unavailing,
to bring us nearer what a church should be.
Lord of the church, we seek a Father’s blessing,
a true repentance and a faith restored,
a swift obedience and a new possessing,
filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord!
We turn to Christ from all our restless striving,
unnumbered voices with a single prayer:
the living water for our souls’ reviving,
in Christ to live, and love to serve and care.
Lord of the church, we long for our uniting,
true to one calling, by one vision stirred;
one cross proclaiming and one creed reciting,
one in the truth of Jesus and his word.
So lead us on; till toil and trouble ended,
one church triumphant one new song shall sing,
to praise his glory, risen and ascended,
Christ over all, the everlasting King!
Words: Timothy Dudley Smith
Tune: Londonderry

The Sermon
The Bishop of Crediton
The congregation stands. During the following hymn, a collection is
taken for the maintenance of the Cathedral and its worship.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!
Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice;
tender to me the promise of his word;
in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name!
Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
his mercy sure, from age to age to same;
his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.
17
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might!
Powers and dominions lay their glory by.
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.
Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word!
Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
to children's children and for evermore!
Words: Timothy Dudley Smith
Tune: Woodlands
The Sending Out
The Bishop of Plymouth reads from the Gospel according to St
Matthew
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had
directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some
doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and
on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have
commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of
the age.’ (Matthew 28: 16-20)
Prayer in honour of the Founder,
Builders and Benefactors of the Cathedral
The Dean says
O Father of our Lord Jesus Christ from whom every family
in heaven and earth is named, who art always to be praised
both in the living and in the dead; we give thanks to thee for Edward,
King and Confessor, our Founder,
and for all our builders and benefactors;
and we pray that according to the riches of thy glory
those who now serve thee in this Cathedral
may be strengthened by the power of thy Spirit,
that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith;
that we, being rooted and grounded in love,
18
may be strong to apprehend with all the saints
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ
which passeth knowledge,
that we may be filled with all thy fullness,
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Blessing from the Leofric Missal
The Bishop says
V: Our help is in the name of the Lord
R: who made heaven and earth.
V: Blessed be the name of the Lord
R: from this time forth and for evermore.
All
May the Lord give you understanding of his wisdom and his grace
and make you diligent in his service;
may he nourish you in the riches of his Gospel
and make you to persevere in all good works;
may he keep your steps from wandering
and direct you in the paths of love and peace;
and the blessing of Almighty God, the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit be upon you and remain with you always.
Amen.
