4th Sunday in Ordinary Time:
EMERGENCY ALERT… ANYBODY THERE?
As Jesus was praised by others upon making an affirmation that Isaiah’s prophecy is
now being fulfilled by him, there were those who doubted upon his claim. This experienced of rejection was the first of the many rejections Jesus will endure during his ministry; but, he will not allow it to become a stumbling block in fulfilling God’s will for him.
Jeremiah, whom God has consecrated before he was formed, carried out faithfully the
mandate of God but also was received with rejection from God’s people. God was aware
that his chosen one will face such difficulty in accomplishing his mission in the face of his
adversaries, and in spite of his shortcomings, he was never left alone by God and was
comforted by Him. In the complexity of life, like Jeremiah, we, too, are confronted with predicaments and oppositions that oftentimes discourage us to carry out the will of God. Whenever we find ourselves in a complicated
situation, we would often turn our backs and run away to avoid undesirable condition. For this reason, the more
we need to hold on to our faith and exert more effort to carry out the will of God unreservedly. With God’s providential help, whatever challenges that may come upon us, his GRACE is sufficient.

Practitioners of Heroic Virtue
Very early on, however, the meaning of the word began
to change. As Christianity began to spread, it became
clear that some Christians lived lives of extraordinary,
or heroic, virtue. While other Christians struggled to
live out the gospel of Christ, these people were eminent
examples of the moral virtues, and they easily practiced
the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. The
word saint thus became more narrowly applied to such
people, who were venerated after their deaths as saints,
usually by the members of their local church or the Christians in the region
where they had lived, because they were familiar with their good deeds. Eventually, the Catholic Church created a process, called "canonization," through
which such venerable people could be recognized as saints by all Christians

Trong khi Chúa Giêsu được một số người ca tụng vì Người khẳng định lời tiên
tri của Isaiah đã ứng nghiệm về Người, thì có một số người khác lại nghi ngờ về
những lời tuyên bố này. Sự bác bỏ này là một trong nhiều lần bác bỏ mà Chúa
Giêsu đã trải nghiệm trong cuộc đời rao giảng của Người; nhưng Người không
để sự việc này làm cản trở sự hoàn thành ý muốn của Thiên Chúa. Tiên tri
Jeremiah, là Người đã được Thiên Chúa phong thánh trước khi ông được tạo
thành, đã trung kiên thi hành chỉ thị của Thiên Chúa và cũng chịu những sự khước bỏ của dân Chúa.
Thiên Chúa đã nhận thấy người độc nhất mà Người chọn sẽ bị đương đầu với những khó khăn khi làm
sứ mạng, khi đối đầu với những kẻ thù, mặc dù có nhiều khuyết điểm, nhưng Thiên Chúa không bao
giờ bỏ rơi ông ta mà ông còn được Thiên Chúa an ủi. Trong cuộc sống phức tạp này, chúng ta cũng như
Jeremiah, phải đương đầu với những tình trạng hiểm nguy và đối lập làm nản chí chúng ta khi thực
hiện ý Thiên Chúa. Bất cứ khi nào chúng ta ở trong hoàn cảnh phức tạp, chúng ta thường quay lưng đi
mà bỏ chạy để tránh tình trạng không mong muốn. Vì lý do này, chúng ta cố gắng giữ vững niềm tin và
cố gắng thi hành ý muốn của Thiên Chúa một cách tốt đẹp. Với ơn thiên triệu của Thiên Chúa giúp, cho
dù bất cứ những thử thách nào đến với chúng ta, chỉ cần có ƠN CHÚA là đủ.

Dù sao, cũng còn rất sớm, để
ý nghĩa của những từ ngữ bắt
đầu có sự thay đổi. Khi Kitô
giáo bắt đầu lan rộng, thì trở
nên rõ ràng khi mà một vài Kitô
hữu sống một cuộc đời với
một nhân đức phi thường, hay
anh hùng. Trong khi một số tín hữu Kitô giáo khác vật
lộn để sống còn với phúc âm Chúa Kitô, những người
này là thí dụ điển hình của các nhân đức luân lý, và họ
dễ dàng thực hành những nhân đức đức tin, nhân đức
hy vọng và và nhân đức từ thiện.
Từ ngữ thánh như vậy đã trở thành hạn hẹp hơn, để
chỉ vào những người này, được tôn kính như các vị

khưyến khích đi lãnh nhận bí tích Hòa Giải. Chúng ta
