What happens if I need
to print more than 300
pages?
Of course you can
continue to print, but
you’ll have to pay for extra
copies. The cost is $0.10 per page (black and
white). We have PayPrint stations at:
• Both campus libraries
• Room 6212 at the New Westminster
campus
• Room A2270 at the Coquitlam campus
Detailed instructions are available in the
computer rooms, in the library and at

How can I cancel my print job?
COPIES
You can also study in the lab provided by the Douglas
Students’ Union (DSU) in the New Westminster campus.
Their office can be accessed from the College’s North
Building (4th floor exit, near Amelia Douglas Gallery) or
from 7th Street. The lab is located on the 2nd floor of their
building. To use it, talk to the DSU front desk.

Is there any policy I should be
aware of?
A
Douglas College student is allowed
to print 300 pages free of charge
each semester. You can go ahead
and print from any machine until using
your 300 pages. At the beginning of
each semester, your quota will be reset
to 300 pages.
If you send the file to the printer, you can’t
cancel it. Don’t waste your 300-page printing
limit on a bad print job. Preview your work
before printing it.

Printing in the DSU Computer Lab
How can I protect my quota of 300 pages?
•
•
Log off the computer when you’re done.
Don’t share your password with anyone.
How can I reduce unnecessary printing?
Some instructors are looking for ways to reduce
the amount of pages that students are required
to print for their courses by accepting
assignments online. You can do your part by
limiting the number of bad print jobs. See the
tips below:
•
•
•
Review information on screen rather than on
paper.
Use the Print Preview feature to see what
your print job looks like and adjust the
document format before printing.
Double-check what you need to print. Most
applications allow you to select which pages
to print.
Remember to
recycle your pages.
Recycle boxes are
located next to
every printer.

Besides the 300 pages free of charge that Douglas
College provides, you can print extra 100 black and
white copies for free with the DSU each semester.
If you exceed the limits, you’ll pay $0.05 for black
and white and $0.35 for colour printing.
•
What do I need to do to use their service?

Douglas College students. These services are
available at both New Westminster (main office front
desk) and Coquitlam campuses (AB Atrium Kiosk).
• Scanning: free

SECURITY
echnology plays an important role
in our daily lives. IT Security risks
and concerns aren’t always top of
mind, but it’s vital to protect yourself
and the College from potential harm.
How can I keep my information and
devices secure?
•

•
it
•
•
•
•
•
•
24 Keep your devices up-to-date with the
latest security settings and patches
(corrections to programs that remove the
security vulnerability).
Run anti-malware software on your
devices and keep it current (find it in
places such as iStore, play stores,
antivirus vendor sites and the
provider of the operating
system).
Don’t leave your devices
unattended.
Externally label your USB devices. If you
lose them, they can be returned to you.
Backup your coursework and data often.
Don’t share your password with others.
Choose strong passwords where possible.
Passphrases are even better
(read more on page 25).
Don’t fall for phishing attempts
— emails designed to trick you
into giving up your credentials
or other personal information (legitimate
organizations won’t ask for these via
email).
Don’t open unknown or unexpected email
attachments or links.
Only download from trusted sources.

Passwords and Passphrases
When hackers developed techniques to guess weak
passwords, strong passwords became crucial. A strong
password is long and contains mixed case, numbers and
punctuation.
A passphrase is made up of a sequence of words (and
may also contain mixed case, numbers and punctuation).
Passphrases are longer, easier to type and easier to
remember (you can associate them with an unusual
scene).
How can I create a passphrase?
•
•
•
Choose four random words, e.g.,
rhino cloud pierced donut.
Create an image in your mind
combining the four words, e.g.,
the rhino pierced the cloud to
make a donut.
Words like rhino can
Remove spaces as some systems

a good passphrase
credentials, e.g.,
rhinopiercedclouddonut.
Optionally and for a stronger passphrase, add
uppercase letters, numbers and punctuation, e.g.,
Rhinopiercedcloud4donut!
How to detect phishing
A phishing email generally:
• Contains poor grammar and spelling.
• Has a link that doesn’t go where it’s supposed to.
• Claims to be from an internal email address, but is
actually from an external email address.
• Includes attachments in zip, executable or document
format designed to infect your device.
