Will the comedian’s background and age allow him to establish a rapport with your
audience? And does the comedian have the gravitas and skill to grab AND hold the attention
of your audience for the duration you want? How well a comedian does at a bar or comedy
club is not always an indication of their ability to do well at a private or corporate event.
Does the comedian have the experience and breadth of material to handle the sensitivities
and potential censorship requirements of your show? Will your audience respect the
comedian enough to let him get away with the kind of material he does? Keep in mind that
just because you saw a comedian do naughty material at a show or on the internet does not
necessarily mean that he cannot work clean.
A comedian with good improvisational skills and stagecraft can be a fantastic host as well
and can smoothly deal with any unexpected crisis at an event. Hiring such a comedian
could save you the cost of engaging a professional anchor while providing entertainment as
well.
If you don’t have the budget to hire a comedian who you’re confident can give you a good
show, hire a different kind of entertainer! Often when comedy does not go well, it goes
badly – there rarely is a middle ground. If you want bulletproof talent, be willing to put your
hand into your pocket. As the old saying goes – If you think it is expensive to hire a
professional, wait till you hire an amateur!
