What is this list and who is it intended for? This initiative of the Guelph-Wellington Local Immigration Partnership aims to increase awareness within the community about immigration and newcomers. The GWLIP list is intended for service providers, newcomers and immigrants, and any other persons interested in news about current immigration and settlement issues, policy changes, research and data, and events/workshops relevant to newcomers to Guelph-Wellington. Thank you for respecting the guidelines that follow; doing so will help keep the list a vital and effective forum for information exchange and discussion. Keep in mind that the list webpage is open to the public and all posts can be read by anyone, though only members can post. List core values The GWLIP will ensure that this list is free of racism, discrimination, and oppression, and that all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. When postings lead to discussion, members are expected to interact respectfully. Messages which are deemed discriminatory, oppressive, offensive, or markedly disrespectful by the GWLIP or other members may be deleted and/or result in the sender being removed from the list. Members of the GWLIP who are also members of the list are reminded to comply with the Communications Protocol and to connect with GWLIP staffs or co-chairs before speaking publicly on behalf of the GWLIP. Content guidelines Users of the list are asked to follow the following guidelines when posting messages. Contact the GWLIP before posting if you have doubts about the nature of your content. Messages must be directly related to issues, news, policies, data, and events related to immigration and settlement, or relevant to newcomers to Canada and Guelph Wellington. Messages should be of interest and relevant to the Guelph Wellington community, although messages can be national- or provincial-scale if they are related to issues and policies that are likely to have an impact on Guelph Wellington. Job ads are permitted if the job is directly related to immigration and settlement. Promotional advertisements/materials for commercial purposes (for-profit, business) are not permitted (e.g., private language tutoring). Confidentiality Members may not forward someone else’s email without their permission, unless it is clearly a public announcement or the sender has requested that the message be forwarded. Members may not publish confidential information from the list. Discussion While discussion on the list is encouraged, pursuing a particular thread over many messages is not likely to interest all list members. If you wish to keep a dialogue going on a specific topic, follow up directly with the list members who have shown interest in the debate. The list is open, including to representatives of government bodies and the media. If a discussion is likely to become sensitive, or requires privacy and guaranteed confidentiality, then interested members should follow up with each other outside of the list. Note that email lists can never guarantee full privacy or confidentiality. Reminder Emails The GWLIP will send a monthly message to the list reminding members of guidelines and expectations. Intervention Protocol If a message is deemed inappropriate by GWLIP staffs, the sender will be contacted and reminded of the nonoppressive nature of the list, and the GWLIP reserves the right to delete the post. A reminder of list protocol will also be sent to the whole list. The GWLIP reserves the right to remove an individual from the list if the member has deliberately attempted to incite hate or cause harm. The GWLIP is committed to providing a transparent rationale for removal decisions. The individual can request to be re-added upon commitment to honouring the anti-racist, antioppressive, and anti-discriminatory nature of the list. If another member feels that a message is inappropriate, or that he/she has been treated with disrespect, the member may submit a complaint to the GWLIP. The GWLIP will review the complaint and take appropriate action if necessary. If a discussion on the list gets too lengthy or hostile in tone, the GWLIP reserves the right to moderate the list and may prevent further messages on the thread/topic from going to the list. Members will be advised to continue their discussion outside of the list. GWLIP reserves the right to adapt these policies and procedures and/or the nature of the liste at any time. January 2015
