The Beginning…
Upon completion of
the vocab review, this
class will work on practice
SOL writing prompts to
prepare themselves for
hopefully, a well-written
essay when it comes to
testing for the SOL next
week. This will be the
final practice before the
SOL testing begin on
tomorrow. They will all
write to the same prompt.
The A-Day students will
continue their work on
language skills in order to
begin preparing for the
writing SOL which will be
in the spring. As they
prepare for the first
benchmark which will
cover writing skills, we
shall prepare for a quiz on
the most basic skill compponent: capitalization and
continue with commas.
They will be reminded
of vocabulary for unit 6
on tomorrow.
They will wrap up the
questions on the tale
from the Pardoner and
go into the powerful tale
from “The Wife of Bath”
which will probably not
get completed in discussion until Wednesday’s
class. In addition, we
shall look to special
research topics of mini
research work…
Week Beginning:
Oct. 19-23, 2015
Tuesday/10-20
Classroom management
and expectations will set
the tone for today’s
introductions and
curricular work for the
week and implications for
the year…
Wednesday/10-21
Planning and analyzing student
potential will be the
consideration, as well. I shall
also tweak the focus of the work
for students as the week
unfolds…
Vocabulary Power
Plus for the New SAT
will have its testing on
unit #6 on today. Same
expectation to do well will
be emphasized. However,
even as I have spent last
week with exercises and
assurance to study, students must take it to heart
if they are going to be prepared. As with the previvous vocabulary, (below)

they should to be able to
spell the words correctly
as well as use them in and
out of context. Next for
the remainder of the
period will be the
Background for unit #7…
Flashcards and written
work will be due on
Friday.
Prep for the next unit, lesson 6,
will have begun on yesterday
and students will be given
additional time, if necessary.
The B-Day students will test on
the vocabulary and perform the
aftermath of the usual vocab
endeavor.
The 4X4 will complete the
SOL testing today, having
written their essay and will
return to class, hopefully with a
sense of how importance it is to
complete their work.
I cannot emphasize enough that
given the behavioral issues of
some: the distractions and inability or unwillingness to follow
through on assignments will
greatly affect a few of these
students’ overall performance if
they do not settle in.
Today’s work will begin the
work on the explorers with de
Vaca’s story of being among the
first to arrive in the colony.
Vocabulary Power Plus
testing for unit #5 for the
Adv. English 12 class.
The students will be
expected to take on very
challenging work in order
to prepare for whatever
testing and as seniors with
college apps on their
radar.
Upon completion of this
testing, they will complete
the background to unit 7.
The class today will work on
the second Canterbury tale: “The
Wife of Bath” which will be
quite interactive, not only in
class reading but also in contemporary applications and
discussion. I expect to complete
this tale by the end of this period,
and I also expect to introduce the
medieval romance, “Sir Gawain
and the Green Knight” to continue the discussion of what a
knight is really like when the
code of chivalry and
exaggeration are not the focus.

Week Beginning: 10/19-10/23, 2015
Thursday/10-22
PARTNERSHIP FOR ACADEMIC
EXCELLENCE has begun now and
run concurrently through the first of
December. Free SAT tutoring will be
ongoing and students will be working
to perform better on standardized tests.
[College Night at the Mall will allow
Partnership to participate which is
an excellent asset to the program]
Friday/10-23
Students are diligently
working on reflection
pieces to be displayed on
the bulletin board in the
hall. Their discovery
pieces will focus around
issues of self-esteem and
motivation. They will
design their own prism…
These students will also be reminded
that they should have their vocabulary
for unit 7 well-prepared for tomorrow
as well as preparation for spelling quiz
#7…
Given this is Homecoming Week
and the classes are excited, to say the
least, we shall attempt to keep the
work very focused until the time
comes to let loose for homecoming
activities. Today, we shall discuss the
narrative by deVaca assigned for home
work and then introduce the slave
narrative as representative of the
literary selections coming to fruition in
the forming of America. Students
should respond well to both of these
selections.
The A-Day students will will check
their vocab prep for unit 7 and execute
the spelling quiz for the 7th unit. In
addition, we will continue the language
skills with the comma after we take a
moment to complete the capitalization
discussion and have our brief
application quiz. These students are
coming along quite nicely.

checked; spelling quiz #7
will be given.
The B-D students will
complete the vocabulary
background check and
their spelling quiz already
delineated.
We will probably have
enough time to begin
homecoming, given the 40
minutes allotted today.
