English 12 Period 3 9:55-11:10 The Beginning… Upon completion of the vocab review, this class will work on practice SOL writing prompts to prepare themselves for hopefully, a well-written essay when it comes to testing for the SOL next week. This will be the final practice before the SOL testing begin on tomorrow. They will all write to the same prompt. The A-Day students will continue their work on language skills in order to begin preparing for the writing SOL which will be in the spring. As they prepare for the first benchmark which will cover writing skills, we shall prepare for a quiz on the most basic skill compponent: capitalization and continue with commas. They will be reminded of vocabulary for unit 6 on tomorrow. They will wrap up the questions on the tale from the Pardoner and go into the powerful tale from “The Wife of Bath” which will probably not get completed in discussion until Wednesday’s class. In addition, we shall look to special research topics of mini research work… Week Beginning: Oct. 19-23, 2015 Tuesday/10-20 Classroom management and expectations will set the tone for today’s introductions and curricular work for the week and implications for the year… Wednesday/10-21 Planning and analyzing student potential will be the consideration, as well. I shall also tweak the focus of the work for students as the week unfolds… Vocabulary Power Plus for the New SAT will have its testing on unit #6 on today. Same expectation to do well will be emphasized. However, even as I have spent last week with exercises and assurance to study, students must take it to heart if they are going to be prepared. As with the previvous vocabulary, (below) [A day students test today] [B day will test on tomorrow.] they should to be able to spell the words correctly as well as use them in and out of context. Next for the remainder of the period will be the Background for unit #7… Flashcards and written work will be due on Friday. Prep for the next unit, lesson 6, will have begun on yesterday and students will be given additional time, if necessary. The B-Day students will test on the vocabulary and perform the aftermath of the usual vocab endeavor. The 4X4 will complete the SOL testing today, having written their essay and will return to class, hopefully with a sense of how importance it is to complete their work. I cannot emphasize enough that given the behavioral issues of some: the distractions and inability or unwillingness to follow through on assignments will greatly affect a few of these students’ overall performance if they do not settle in. Today’s work will begin the work on the explorers with de Vaca’s story of being among the first to arrive in the colony. Vocabulary Power Plus testing for unit #5 for the Adv. English 12 class. The students will be expected to take on very challenging work in order to prepare for whatever testing and as seniors with college apps on their radar. Upon completion of this testing, they will complete the background to unit 7. The class today will work on the second Canterbury tale: “The Wife of Bath” which will be quite interactive, not only in class reading but also in contemporary applications and discussion. I expect to complete this tale by the end of this period, and I also expect to introduce the medieval romance, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” to continue the discussion of what a knight is really like when the code of chivalry and exaggeration are not the focus. Free SAT tutoring will be ongoing and students will be working to perform better on standardized tests. [College Night at the Mall will allow Partnership to participate which is an excellent asset to the program] Friday/10-23 Students are diligently working on reflection pieces to be displayed on the bulletin board in the hall. Their discovery pieces will focus around issues of self-esteem and motivation. They will design their own prism… These students will also be reminded that they should have their vocabulary for unit 7 well-prepared for tomorrow as well as preparation for spelling quiz #7… Given this is Homecoming Week and the classes are excited, to say the least, we shall attempt to keep the work very focused until the time comes to let loose for homecoming activities. Today, we shall discuss the narrative by deVaca assigned for home work and then introduce the slave narrative as representative of the literary selections coming to fruition in the forming of America. Students should respond well to both of these selections. The A-Day students will will check their vocab prep for unit 7 and execute the spelling quiz for the 7th unit. In addition, we will continue the language skills with the comma after we take a moment to complete the capitalization discussion and have our brief application quiz.
