UPDATED 6/11/2012 2012/2013 Summer Reading Requirements and Reading Assignment No other factor influences a student’s performance more than his/her reading. National standards set the reading goal of reading twenty-five books or book equivalents each year of high school. This equates to approximately 1,000,000 words per year which is the minimum needed to improve or enhance a student’s linguistic skills. Our purpose for requiring summer reading and completing a summer assignment is to create life-long learners who value literacy and critical thinking. We are working to increase the reading quality and quantity of our students. Our school goals of improving student reading, writing, and problem solving will be achieved sooner with your supportive efforts. We value reading as one of the basic skills. The books are available through local bookstores, the public library, and used bookstores. As an aid to students, some of the selections are also available on cassette tapes and CD’s. The chart below indicates the required book or books that need to be read. The summer assignment information can be found on the school website at www.jefferson.k12.ky.us/schools/high/male/index.html. Click on the appropriate grade level under English Summer Reading. Students will discuss and be tested on all books the first day of school. Also, they will be expected to turn-in all work packet information on the first day of school, Tuesday, August 21st. We encourage parents to read the books and discuss them with their child.
