Ref.: 2007 OHIO FIRE CODE CHANGE

INSPECTION & TESTING TAGS OFC 901.6 & 901.7

Changes to the new 2007 Ohio Fire Code, now requires tagging Fire Alarm panel and devices, see referenced material.

(5) Color coded tagging system has been developed to meet these new Code requirements

White Installation Tag

This tag should be completed at the time of the initial fire alarm installation and placed on the inside of the panel door or side of the cabinet. An additional permits for the site obtained thereafter should also be placed inside the panel as well, but not covering the previous tag.

Blue Inspection Tag

This card is for Fire Department Inspection use for verifying qualified and licensed alarm contractors are properly inspecting and testing the Fire Alarm system according to NFPA 72 and OFC 907.20.

This tag must be completed at each inspection period and placed in the plastic sleeve attached to the front of

Fire Alarm Control Panel door. The tag should be kept current and marked by the Fire Alarm Inspection

Technician at each time of the NFPA 72 required inspection schedule (OFC 901.6.3).

The tag should be punched, with a hole punch (kept in procession of Technician), this will indicate whether the system is current on its inspection, and has been tested in accordance with NFPA 72. The quarterly inspection (QTR) boxes shall be punched to meet this requirement (OFC 907.20).

The back side of the card shall be filled in with Technician’s name and certification number. The Passed and

Failed boxes shall be marked based on the test results of passing or failing. A NFPA 72 Inspection form shall also be filled out and kept on site.

The information of where the As-Built Drawing / Test & Inspection Reports / Owners Manual shall be listed in this card, along with the site contact’s name and number and extension.

I recommend that a Fire Alarm Document cabinet be installed next to the Fire Alarm panel for keeping the documents in as required by NFPA 72 and now OFC 2007.

Red OUT of SERVICE Tag

This tag shall be used for indicating that the Fire Alarm system or devices are Out of Service (OFC 901.7.2).

This deficiencie is a serious life safety issue and liability. This tag should be affixed to the Fire Alarm Control

Panel door, and any additional devices that are not in proper working condition. The OFC 901.7.3 does suggest be done, but the local AHJ has the ultimate say in where to place this tag. The NFPA 72 requires that if something is Out of Service over 4 hours that the Fire Department is notified immediately.

Yellow Impairment Tag

This tag is used for indicating that the Fire Alarm system requires service or not in compliance with adopted

Codes. This also can serve as a notification to the owner that an impairment was found during an inspection or testing, and could not be repaired, or not authorized for repair (NFPA 72 10.2.1.2c). Please indicate that the

Fire Department was notified on this tag.

Green Service Tag

This tag is used to indicate that the Fire Alarm or device was out of service and has been repaired and is now in working order. This tag should be placed over any Red Out of Service tags & Yellow Impairment tags.
