MINUTES OF THE 1ST ANNUAL MEETING OF THE IOWA STATE USBC WOMEN’S BOWLING ASSOCIATION, INC. April 14, 2007 The Downtown Marriott, Des Moines, Iowa Saturday Afternoon Session, April 14, 2007 The 1st Annual Meeting of the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association, Inc. was called to order on Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 1:05 p.m. by President Kristi Reidy. Sergeant-at-Arms Carma Bouska, assisted by ISUSBCWBA Director Shannon McHugh carried the flags for the presentation of the colors. The delegation joined in the pledge to the flag. 2nd Vice President Marilyn Mittan gave the invocation. Des Moines Area USBC WBA President Jo Porter was called to the podium for the welcome. Connie Rommel, 1st Vice President of the Greater Cedar Valley USBC, came to the podium and thanked the Des Moines Area USBC WBA for the Friday Night party and for the enjoyable evening. She invited all to the Greater Cedar Valley (formerly the Waterloo WBA) 2008 event and assured us all of an enjoyable time there. President Reidy then called on 1st Vice President Shirley Bloodsworth for the Report of the Rules Committee: REPORT OF THE RULES COMMITTEE TO: THE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS AND DELEGATES ASSEMBLED AT THE 1st ANNNUAL CONVENTION OF THE IOWA STATE USBC WOMEN’S BOWLING ASSOCIATION, INC. We, the committee on rules, wish to submit the following rules for your consideration: 1. Roberts Rules of Order, Newly Revised, shall govern the procedure of the convention provided they do not conflict with the Bylaws of the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association, Inc., and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). 1 2. Each delegate must personally present her USBC card or other form of identification to the Credential Committee when registering. Any deviation from these requirements must be authorized by an ISUSBCWBA officer. 3. Delegates may register no later than 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2007. All delegates shall have the privilege of discussion and vote. 4. Delegates must be seated together in a designated area. 5. Delegates must wear their badges in full view during convention hours. 6. If a delegate is unable to serve after registering and receiving the badge, said badge must be returned to the Credential Committee before an alternate will be permitted to serve. 7. Discussion shall be confined strictly to the motion on the floor and questions, answers, and debates shall be directed to the Chair. 10. Delegates and members must give full attention at all times to the speaker having the floor. 11. Delegates wishing to leave the room must obtain permission from the Sergeantat-Arms. 12. Use of cellular phones in this meeting room is strictly prohibited. 13. Exceptions to these rules may be made by the President at her discretion. Motion carried. 2 Shirley then pointed out Rule #12, prohibiting the use of cell phones in the convention room. Shirley then thanked her committee. CREDENTIAL COMMITTEE REPORT Anita Samuelson, Credential Committee Chair, made the following report as of April 14, 2007, 1:00 p.m.: Officers 4 Directors 6 Association Manager 1 Delegates 144 Local associations represented 50 Total eligible to vote 154 President Reidy thanked the committee for their hard work. President Reidy then asked all first time delegates to stand and be recognized, and welcomed them to our events. Charla Green, Association Manager, then came to the podium to honor 3 Presidents and 1 Association Manager for their 10 Year Service Awards: Phyllis Sackett of Greenfield, Linda Curtis of Greene County, Deb Tisor of Washington, Iowa, and Kathy Scott of Fort Dodge. Charla expressed thanks to the current and past Presidents and Association Managers of the locals, as they are very vital part of the organization. President Reidy returned to the podium to present seven 300 game awards. Brenda Stevens, Council Bluffs, Tammi Gandy, Cedar Rapids, Julie Stedman, Dubuqueland, Erin Carter, Cedar Rapids, Amanda Edenburn, Council Bluffs, Tabitha Tillie, Muscatine, and Kay Bruce, Cedar Rapids. None of the 300 game award recipients was present. Special Awards Committee Shannon McHugh then came to the podium for the report of the Special Awards Committee. After greeting the delegation, Shannon said: “Since the inception of this award in 1988, 17 women have been honored by this award for their extra efforts. Would all of the past winners of this award please stand. The nomination forms are sent to each local association president with the supply mailing. The forms are relatively simple to complete. The local board should recommend that the name be submitted – the local president must sign the form and it must be returned to the state office by June 1st. 3 Please keep in mind that if your association has submitted a candidate and that association manager was not selected – then her name must be resubmitted the next year. The qualifications are not held over from year to year. The nominee must have served at least 5 years as local association secretary or manager. It is important that she has attended state workshops and annual meetings, and has participated in the state tournaments. While in most associations, the local association managers do the jobs that they are required to do – it is the out of the ordinary and special things they do for your local association members that counts the most. As a “bowling cheerleader” is their voice nice, loud, and clear? Do they go above and beyond the ordinary? There are forms at the credentials desk for anyone who thinks that their local association manager would be a good candidate for this award. Any one of you may submit a manager’s name to your local board of directors for consideration for this award. Take one of these forms back with you and review it to see if your association manager would be worthy of this honor. There is a recipient for this award this year. I would like to ask Carma to escort Shirley Swank of Muscatine to the podium. Shirley has been selected to receive the Outstanding Local Association Manager Award. We used to keep this award a secret until the annual meeting but a few years ago a change was made to notify all special award winners of their selection immediately. This gives the honorees more time to enjoy their new status or more time for nervousness. Shirley served as the local association secretary-treasurer for Muscatine for 24 years. The Muscatine USBC WBA honored Shirley at their annual meeting and breakfast and presented her with a gift for her years of service. Shirley has been an active member of the youth association by serving on their Board of Directors. She has also assisted the youth secretaries by recording and sending the awards earned by the youth through the season, and she helps with youth sign-up. Shirley also supports and attends the High School Federation and tallies the Baker Games for the girl’s teams at the meets. Over the years, the women’s association has been asked to run tournaments for the Moose, American Legion, and Elks as a money-making project. Shirley has coordinated and ran those tournaments as well. Her nomination form states: ‘I’m sure when Shirley took the position of Secretary of the Muscatine Women’s Bowling Association she had no idea she’d still be doing the job 24 years later. But sometime through the years, she set a goal staying until she had served 25 years. Although the 2006-07 season would have been her 25th year, with the merge of our three associations, Shirley did not reach her 25th year but as far as we’re concerned, she has far exceeded her goal. With the job she has done by being conscientious, staying on top of things at all levels of bowling, local, state and nationals, Shirley, you deserve the appreciation and recognition of the entire association for a job well done.’ Shirley Etter, Muscatine USBC WBA President. 4 Karen Krula, former IWBA Secretary-Treasurer, says on a personal note ‘At the state tournament in Muscatine, she was responsible for the doubles and singles. There were very few squads when I looked across the room that she wasn’t sitting at that table. Besides she is a fantastic volunteer and willing to do anything that needed to be done. Any free time she has is spent at the lanes watching family members bowl. Her daughter, Robin, was inducted into the IWBA Hall of Fame a few years ago. I know that she is very proud of her children and grandchildren and they are also outstanding bowlers.’ Karen also included on Shirley’s nomination form that ‘She is a great candidate for this award and very deserving. We would be very lucky indeed if we had more of her volunteering for these locals! She’s great!’ Congratulations Shirley!” Shirley then stepped to the microphone and thanked her association for submitting her name for this award and she accepted the award in honor of them. Shirley expressed her thanks for the award. Shannon returned to the podium for the presentation of the Hall of Fame award. Before we get started I would like to ask any Hall of Famers in attendance today to please stand. Thank you ladies! Shannon then said “Today we are honoring an Iowa bowler who has contributed through her superior performance on the lanes in our sport. Carma, would you please escort Jan to the podium. It is my pleasure and honor to introduce this year’s inductee to the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame, Jan Thomas of Des Moines, Iowa. Jan you have been named to the ISUSBCWBA Hall of Fame for performance. The ISUSBCWBA Board of Directors approved your nomination at the Fall Board Meeting last September. Jan has been a member of Iowa Women’s Bowling Association for 30 years, bowling in 28 state tournaments and 18 national tournaments. In our state tournament, she placed first in singles in 1989 in Division 1, and in 1997 she placed 3rd in singles in Division 1 as well as rolling for a tie of the tournament high game of 268. She has also finished as high as tenth place in the classic division at nationals in the doubles event. Her highest average is 209 in 1995-96 and she has bowled two 300 games, as well as games of 298 and 299 and countless games of 275 and over. Her highest series is 770 rolled in 2006 and she has had numerous 700 series scores. Jan has also bowled in several other tournaments, winning several championships. In the past, Jan has served as secretary-treasurer of many leagues and was a coach for several seasons and served on the 2006 Des Moines WBA nominating committee. Jan was also a member of a national record setting team during the 1994-95 season with a score of 3646 for a five member mixed team. Jan, your special day is here and on behalf of the members of the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association, I am very honored to present you with the plaque which reads: Iowa State USBC WBA Hall of Fame Jan Thomas inducted April 14, 2007. Presented to Jan Thomas for 5 outstanding ability in the game of American Ten Pins. Your name has already been engraved on the Hall of Fame plaque which is kept at the ISUSBCWBA office. Congratulations Jan.” Jan thanked Shannon, and Jane Jacobson for submitting her name for the honor, her family and friends for joining her today, her son Jeff who is present today, he tried bowling with her but just couldn’t keep up. Her longtime friends and bowling teammates and last but not least, Don Breeden, her significant other and coach, expressing many times of frustration and encouragement and joy, the countless number of bowling balls he has drilled and the many, many hours of coaching he has put in even though she is probably his most difficult student, you see, most students don’t argue with their coaches, Don was always there to help and has fixed many a flaw in her game which enabled her to achieve all the accomplishments Shannon named. I have enjoyed being on the state board this year, my first time and I really enjoyed it and thank you ladies for helping me, it’s also my first year on the city board and thank you city board members for helping me, and thank you to the Hall of Fame committee for selecting me for this great honor. Shannon then returned to the podium to finish her Special Awards Committee report. The Board has made changes to the following awards: The Bev Ortner 800 Series award will now be known as the ISUSBCWBA 800 Series award, the Dale Bertramsen 300 Game award will now be known as ISUSBCWBA 300 Game award. There were no changes made to the 700 series medal, the 275 and over game award was changed to once per lifetime from once per season. The Hall of Fame award will be a state of Iowa plaque and the deadline was changed for nominations from August 1 to June 1. The Lo Borschuk Outstanding Local Association Secretary award is now known as the Outstanding Local Association Manager award and the deadline is changed to June 1 from August 1. The Virg Van Dierendonck Friendship Award and the Elaine Rasmussen Spirit Award have been combined to form a new award called the Above & Beyond Award that we feels brings the essence of both awards into one. The deadline for nomination is also June 1st. All these new forms will be posted on the website soon. The tournament participation awards have been discontinued at this time. This includes the Betty Meyer award, the Mae Starek award, the Floy Harmsen award and the Laura Albrecht award. The 10-Year Service award will be kept but will be limited to one per office per association. Increased membership certificate has been discontinued. Most pins over average for a series pin will be discontinued after the current supply is gone, about 40 are left. Shannon urged the delegation to submit names for the special awards. The names must be submitted to the state office by June 1. Shannon thanked her committee. President Kristy Reidy then announced a 15-minute break to the delegation. President Reidy asked for additions or corrections to the minutes of the Organizational meeting as printed in the annual report book. As there were none, the minutes shall stand approved as printed. There was no correspondence. Kristy then invited Cedar Rapids to give their presentation which was “Rockin' & Rollin' in the Rapids” in 2009. Marylee Malmgren of the Cedar Rapids Convention Bureau gave her report 6 including changes and updates since 2003. She invited all to the Cedar Rapids hospitality room #3005 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Cedar Rapids USBC WBA then presented their skit and door prizes. President Reidy returned to the microphone and invited Loretta Wander, Greater Cedar Valley USBC, to the microphone. Loretta reported that Maple Lanes and the Greater Cedar Valley USBC are looking forward to our visit next year. Loretta told of plans for a schedule book, coupons, discounts, maps, etc. Each team captain and each association will receive the schedule book. Loretta announced a minimum of $8,000.00 additional prize money from the Waterloo motel tax fund. Brackets will be held; shirts are available this weekend and will be available at the tournament. Door prizes will be held in the hospitality room #3005 where ice cream sundaes will be served. Loretta then asked Connie Rommel to come forward. Connie had a flag that was donated to be given away. This flag was flown over our nation’s capitol on August 1, 2006, the first day of USBC, and the winner of the flag was Teneisha Leininger of Mason City. President Reidy then returned to the podium and reported the next order of business is the report of the President which is printed in the delegate packets and she advised she will not read the report. REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT April 14, 2007 Des Moines TO THE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, DELEGATES AND GUESTS ASSEMBLED AT THE 1st ANNUAL MEETING OF THE IOWA STATE USBC WOMEN’S BOWLING ASSOCIATION, INC.: Greetings to all and welcome to 1st Annual Meeting of the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association. I wish to extend a heart felt thank you to all of the Des Moines USBC WBA officers, directors, and members for their hospitality. Events like this don’t just happen. They take a lot of planning and hard work and these ladies have truly met the challenge and we appreciate all of their efforts to make this year’s tournament and convention a success. This is not the first time this association have risen to the occasion and served as the hosting association for this event. As a matter of fact, this is the eighth time Des Moines has hosted these events. The first state tournament hosted by Des Moines was back in 1934 when forty-seven teams competed. Des Moines also holds the record for the largest state tournament to date with 3127 teams back in 1984. This year’s tournament surpassed our projection of 850 teams by nearly 200 with a total team entry of 1024 teams. I hope this is a new trend and that next year’s tournament entries continue to grow. I want to extend my sincere congratulations to Amanda Edenburn, Brenda Stevens and Tammy Bockert of Council Bluffs, Tabitha Tillie of Muscatine, Kay Bruce and Tammi 7 Grady of Cedar Rapids, and Julie Stedman from Dubuque for rolling their first 300 game. Congratulations also to Jan Thomas this year’s inductee to the Iowa State USBC WBA Hall of Fame for superior performance, Shirley Swank for being selected as the Iowa State Outstanding Association Manager, and all of our Ten-Year Service Award recipients. Congratulations ladies for your dedicated service and thank you for your support and service to our sport and the bowlers of Iowa. Unfortunately, we did not receive any nomination papers for the Iowa State USBC WBA Spirit or Friendship awards this year. Candidates for these two awards must be submitted yearly. Nomination papers for both of these awards are not carried over from year to year. I know there are many deserving candidates out there and hope that we receive some nominees for next year’s awards. As usual this has been a very busy year for me. Following our last meeting I had the privilege to represent you at the first USBC convention in Orlando, Florida. It was truly an honor to serve as your state delegate again. In June, Charla, Shirley Bloodsworth, and I traveled to Milwaukee for the Association Leaders Workshop. We all gained a lot from this very informative meeting. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to attend this year’s USBC’s Association Leaders workshop because it is being held in Las Vegas. In July I attended the State Workshop in Newton. I want to extend my thanks to the Jasper County USBC WBA for all the work they did to help make this year’s workshop a success. I also want to congratulate Shirley Bloodsworth and the workshop committee for another job well done. Following that workshop Karen, Charla, and I traveled to Waterloo and selected the Ramada and 5 Sullivan Bros. Center as the site for next year’s convention. We visited both bowling centers and selected Maple Lanes for all three events for next year’s tournament. The Fall Board Meeting and Annual Awards Banquet were held in September in Des Moines. Unfortunately, the banquet attendance was down again this year. In an effort to cut costs, the board decided to discontinue the awards banquet for the time being. At the end of March I was honored to serve as your State delegate to the National USBC convention. It was the first time the convention was held prior to our annual meeting. Shirley Bloodsworth and I traveled together to Nashville, Tennessee, to attend the second annual USBC convention at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention center. I hope some of you were able to watch some of the activities from this year’s convention live on Bowl.com. I will provide a brief report of the convention activities, but urge all of you to visit bowl.com for a more detailed account of the convention. In closing, I want to extend my sincere thanks to Charla Green for all of the hard work she has done as our new Association Manager. She has been a true joy to work with. I 8 also want to thank the members of the ISUSBCWBA Board of Directors and you the delegates for giving me the privilege to serve as the first president of our new organization. It continues to be an honor to serve all of you. Your support and friendship is greatly appreciated. I wish all of you good health, good friends and good bowling. Sincerely, Kristi Reidy ISUSBCWBA President Kristi then thanked Charla for the job she has done so far this year, and then called on Charla for the report of the Association Manager. Charla advised her report is also printed and in the packets and that she would not read it. REPORT OF THE ASSOCIATION MANAGER April 14, 2007 Des Moines, IA TO: The Officers, Directors, Delegates & Guests assembled at the 1st Annual Meeting of the Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association, Inc. Welcome to Des Moines and your 1st ISUSBCWBA Annual Meeting and Tournament! The Des Moines Area USBC WBA has been doing an excellent job of handling their hosting duties both on and off the lanes. Many, many thanks to the Des Moines Area USBC WBA Board of Directors and all the volunteers who have put forth such great efforts and many hours in preparation of the event as well as the many hours at the lanes! Des Moines has previously hosted our event in 1934, 1945, 1958, 1968, 1984, 1993, and 1999. In 1934 our event hosted 47 teams, and in 1984 was our all time high entry of 3127 teams! Membership: As of February 28, 2007, our membership figure is at 23,131 which is a decline of 797 from the season ending 2005-2006. Please call, email, or write at any time. The office email address is: isusbcwba@frontiernet.net, our website is www.iowawba.com. The website is updated weekly to reflect the changes in the tournament, and the forms will be updated timely as well. Many, many thanks to all for the help and support I have received this season as I have transitioned into the Association Manager position. I have learned a great deal, and I’m still learning more each and every day. This organization, and myself personally, are here solely to serve our bowlers in Iowa and bowling in general. Working together, we will nurture our great sport and help it to grow and remain healthy and strong. The Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Association, Inc. is a great organization and is governed by many great and dedicated women. We’re a part of a tremendous national organization, USBC, which works hard at keeping our sport in the forefront of the media and the sports world. Working together, I’m confident we will see bowling return to the popularity it experienced in past years. Be it league bowling as most of us know it, Sport bowling, tournaments, bowling birthday parties, Cosmic bowling, it’s all fun and it’s good for bowling. Maybe the occasional family outing to the bowling center will be so much fun, it will bring more league bowlers in the future, let’s hope so! Have a great finish to our 2006-07 bowling season, and a wonderful summer. I’ll look forward to seeing many of you at the workshop in Newton! Sincerely, Charla Green Association Manager Charla then stated that the Interim Financial Report, printed, in also in the packets and asked for any questions. The Financial Report as printed in the delegates packet was reviewed. The Legislative Committee for 2006-07 was approved. Charla Green Association Manager Administrative Policy Kristi then returned to the podium and called on Wanda Blake for her report on Administrative Policy. Wanda thanked her association, Cedar Rapids, for our 2009 invitation and skit. Wanda report it is her committee’s duty to ensure the Board is operating within our guidelines. Wanda reported there were many changes this past year as reported earlier. Some of the changes were necessary due to financial woes, however, if the dues increase, we can bring some of these services back. Wanda thanked her committee. Auditor’s Report President Reidy then called on Charla to give the auditor’s report which was overlooked earlier. Charla reported the auditor’s report is printed and in the packet. Charla asked for questions, there were none. Awards Banquet 2006 President Reidy then called on Shannon McHugh for her report on the 2006 Awards Banquet. Shannon asked if all those in attendance had seen or purchased the Des Moines Area USBC WBA cookbook and advised that Shannon was the first dip in the book Shannon reported: “Approximately 50 people were welcomed to the 31st Annual ISUSBCWBA Awards Banquet held September 16, 2006, at the Holiday Inn Airport Conference Center in Des Moines. This banquet honors all champions of the 2006 State Championship Tournament in DavenportBettendorf; the Senior Women’s Tournament which was held in Oskaloosa; as well as the Tournament of Champions singles tournament held in Des Moines. The banquet theme ‘Over the Rainbow’ featured pots of gold found at the end of the rainbow, with colorful table accents. Following a delicious meal, ISUSBCWBA Association Manager Charla Green introduced each of the champions who were present and gave a brief summary of their bowling accomplishments. They were then presented with their awards and had their photos taken. 13 Due to the decrease in state dues and lack of attendance at the annual awards banquet, the Board has decided to discontinue the awards banquet at this time.” Shannon thanked her committee. Finance Committee Kristi then called on Sally Reighard for her report of the Finance committee. Sally said: “Activity to date for the proposed budgets of all the accounts was reviewed for possible problems and there were none. The proposed budget for the 2008 tournament in Waterloo was established. The good news is the entry fee will remain the same at $18.00 per person per event in spite of a 50 cents increase in lineage fees. The Board has chosen to absorb that increase by trying to cut expenses and maximize the income we earn through interest on the lineage and prize fund. One way to cut expenses that is being considered is possible email confirmation of the entry, thus reducing the postage needs. (And just a reminder here – when you need to have a replacement copy of a confirmation – or anything else – sent to you, that adds to our postage expenses.) All other information items included in the confirmation mailing – the map of the tournament city, the hotel listing, and so forth – would then be available on the website for downloading. Those without email will still be mailed. Another method we will utilize to reduce expense is to print the entry form in-house, thus not having to order a large quantity from a commercial printer. We can start with a small quantity and additional quantities can be printed as needed. Downloading from the website will also be another option. The bad news is that the following year we will most likely need to increase the entry fee as we already know the lineage will be increased again. Last year, Des Moines was estimated at 875 teams, 2040 doubles, 4080 singles, and 3900 all events. You came through with 49 more teams, 105 more doubles, 210 more singles and 881 more all events. Now, this year’s budget is projecting 825 teams, 2145 doubles, 4200 singles and 4075 all events. Let’s get this tournament back to climbing up hill instead of on the slide down the hill”. Sally thanked her committee. Legislative President Reidy then called for the report of the Legislative committee. Shirley Bloodsworth took the podium noting there was one piece of legislation asking for a dues increase if USBC allowed it, which they did not; therefore, there is no legislation at this time. Shirley thanked her committee. Newsletter and Promotion Sally Reighard reported and said: “Since it was set up in September, 2004, our web page has received in excess of 15,570 hits, an average of around 370 per month. We feel we need to increase our efforts in getting the word out about its existence. Therefore, to aid in that effort, 14 we have some preliminary goals. Some of those goals are: get the web address out to as many of our bowlers as we can, so for those of you here today who might not know, that web address is www.iowawba.com, get a link set up from bowl.com, create additional pages for: Hall of Fame and other special awards winners, Board of Directors with email contact, possible local association contacts, a history section with lots of past information. We also intend to put information from this annual meeting on the web, sort of an electronic version of the newsletter, because we want to get the information out as soon as possible. We do realize, however, that not everyone has access to the internet, so all the annual meeting information will also be in the first issue of the newsletter this fall. And when the fall issue of the newsletter does come out, we hope you will enjoy it even more as we try to improve its readability and content. And speaking of content, we certainly welcome and encourage all of you to submit news and information to the state office for the newsletter. It can just a short, little blurb for “Heard Around the State,” or a human interest story like the one about Pauline Stokes that was in the February issue. Just mail or email your information to the state office. The newsletter will continue to be put on the web. We will strive to get more human-interest stories in it. One thing I need to mention is we will be asking you to sign a release whenever we might want to use your picture. News releases will go out next week to the home-town newspapers of the individuals who will be recognized tomorrow – the Hall of Fame inductee, the recipient of the Outstanding SecretaryManager award, and those elected to the Board of Directors. To help promote the association the committee is investigating the possibility of having T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets with an Iowa State logo of some type available sometime in the future.” Sally thanked her committee. Special Tournaments Kristi then called on Carma Bouska for the report of Special Tournaments. “Our Senior Tournament this year is being held in Newton. New Hampton will host our 2008 Senior Tournament and please encourage your members to enter this tournament. The Tournament of Champions will no longer be held due to low participation. We will continue our Bowl for the Cure Mail-In Tournament and Shannon will be giving you updates on this tournament.” Shannon then took the podium for a report on the Bowl for the Cure Tournament. Shannon said: “How many of you have heard of our Bowl for the Cure mail-in tournament? How many participated this year? In February, the ISUSBCWBA sponsored its fourth annual mail-o-graphic tournament for the benefit of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation. 15 This “Bowl for the Cure” tournament was a huge success with 1116 entries! That is almost 100 entries more than our highest previous total! For this tournament the rules were simple. The entry fee is $5, with $2 going to Bowl for the Cure. There were three division: Division 1 – averages 135 and below, Division 2 – averages 136 to 155, and Division 3 – averages 156 and above. Entrants were required to enter by January 18th. Certified league scores for the week of February 4 – 10 were used as their tournament scores. The scores of the following week were allowed if the entrant could not compete the first week for reason such as illness, injury, family emergencies, or local tournaments. Before we present the winners, I would like to give out a few certificates. I received checks from 2 leagues in the Davenport Metro USBC WBA – the Friday Nightmares and the Early Girlies and I understand that the Leisurettes also helped. Between these 2 leagues they raised and donated a total of $2,100.00 – that is separate from their entry fees. We would like to give each league a certificate as a “Top Fundraiser” – Friday Nightmares - $1,100.00 and the Early Girlies - $1,000.00. A ‘Top Fundraiser’ certificate was also presented to the Hull USBC WBA. This association only has 35 women members. Sheila Meyer of the Hull USBC WBA at Sioux Center was the driving force behind this association’s donation. With their 25 women members participating in their fund raising efforts, they raised $2,055.85! That is outstanding! A certificate for “Above & Beyond” was also presented to Sheila Meyer for her efforts. She organized their entire tournament – sponsors, prizes, and decorations, and then turned the proceeds over to our state association to be included in our grand total. To each winner we present this Beanie Baby bear. Her name is “Cure” and the tag reads: “To those we’ve lost and those we love, our promise is to rise above. We know we’ll beat this, that’s for sure. Support the cause, help find a cure.” Carma escorted Connie Buckman of the Forest City USBC to the podium. Connie was the winner of Division 1 with a handicap score of 833. Connie’s average is 130, she had games of 229, 166, 153 for a 548 series and she bowled 158 pins over her average. Congratulations Connie! Winner of Division 2 was Tracy Bartlett of the Dyersville USBC WBA. Tracy’s handicap score was 815 and her average is 144. She had games of 169, 196, and 207 for a 572 series for her 140 pins over her average. Congratulations Tracy! Terri Hendricks of the Davenport Metro USBC WBA was the winner of Division 3, with a handicap score of 828. Her average is 179, with games of 216, 247, and 227 for a 690 series and was 153 pins over her average. Congratulations Terri! 16 The 1116 tournament entries raised a total of $2,232.00 for the Foundation and outside donations of another $4,796.82 raised our total to $7,028.82. This is practically double our donation of last year of $3,656.00. We have requested that these funds be returned to the 4 Komen affiliates in Iowa, Southeast Iowa in Ottumwa, Des Moines affiliate, the Siouxland affiliate in Sioux City, and the affiliate in the Quad Cities. I would also like to share with you quickly the rule changes for next year. We have received requests in the past for men or BA members to be able to participate in the tournament. At this time we have decided to allow men and women that only bowl as BA members to participate. We are adding 2 divisions for the BA members, averages 170 and below, and averages 171 and above, and the average on which handicap will be based has been raised to 240 from 225. The entry fee will remain the same at $5.00. The tournament dates will be the week of February 10 through 16, and the next week of February 17 through 23 if unable to bowl the first week, and the next year we will also allow scores bowled in the team event only in your local association tournaments if your tournament is held during this time. You may enter for each team you bowl on. Also I would like to share, I found out that the Clinton USBC WBA partnered with the Camanche USBC WBA and held its own Bowl for the Cure tournament last October. In the two days that they held their tournament, they raised $14,500.00!!!! Congratulations on such an amazing effort!!! They requested that the entire amount raised be returned to the Quad Cities affiliate of the Komen Foundation. Other associations that have made notable donations are Clarinda $215.00, Waverly $100.00 and $54.75 from the Men’s City league in Greene County (which is my association; I passed the bucket one night). For those that might be interested, the entire standing sheet and prize list can be viewed on the Iowa State USBC WBA website at www.iowawba.com. Copies of the final standing sheet and prize lists are also available at the delegate registration table. If you don’t have any luck with the website, or we run out of copies, you can email me or call and I can send you the results as an email attachment or regular mail. Also, as a part of this year’s tournament, we purchased 3 Betty Crocker Limited Editions of the Pink Plaid cookbook, to be given away to those bowlers who paid an entry fee into the tournament. Two of this year’s winners are Connie Bahn, Clarinda USBC WBA and Marlys Richter, Sheldon USBC WBA, and their cookbooks were mailed to them because they were not attending this convention. The third winner is here today and does not know that her name was drawn for the cookbook, Norma Rose, Des Moines Area USBC WBA. At the Sunday session, we will draw for the winner of the Pink Barbie. You do not need to be present to win. We are also raffling two “Bowl for the Cure” pink bowling balls. The association purchased one for the drawing and a second ball was donated to us a few weeks ago. The drawing for the 2 balls will be at the conclusion of the state tournament. 17 If you would like to hold your own Bowl for the Cure tournament, you may contact bowling headquarters for an event kit. I would like to thank everybody who participated. Your support is greatly appreciated and we’ll be looking forward to next year’s mail-in.” Tournament Study Carma then came back to the podium and reported that we will be hosting a new mail-in tournament in November with tournament proceeds going to the BVL. You will be receiving information on this new tournament in a future mailing. It was brought up at the USBC National Meeting in Nashville, how the BVL is being neglected due to the promotion of the Susan B. Komen organization fighting breast cancer. We do hold a mail-in tournament for breast cancer and thought we would give a try to the BVL mail-in tournament. Please pass this information to your members and encourage participation. Tournament Study Kristi called on Carma to give this report in Jean Mumm’s absence. We have again asked members to fill out a smoker’s survey in our newsletter and at the tournament. The results of that survey were 75% for a non-smoking tournament and 25% for a smoking tournament. We are bringing this before the delegates for their vote on Sunday whether to have a smoke free tournament or to allow smoking at the state tournament. We have made some changes to the tournament average entry rules. A female bowler who is no longer a youth bowlers and plans to bowl in the state tournament will use her average from the previous season. A female bowler who bowls in both WBA and BA will use her highest average regardless of which league it is in. If her average is higher in the BA league that is the average she will need to use. Carma thanked her committee. Workshop Advisory Kristi then called on Shirley Bloodsworth for her report. The Annual Meeting workshop was held this morning with 157 in attendance. The Strike It Up kitchen band entertained at the workshop. A donation of $361.37 for BVL was collected from the workshop attendees. In the delegate packets, there is an orange flyer regarding the Summer workshop. Shirley thanked her committee. President Reidy then made announcements regarding the 600 club, the Iowa Women Bowling Writers, Iowa Bowling Council will meet in room 3104, and hospitality rooms are in 3005 and 3105. The memorial service is at 8:30 a.m., no flash pictures during the service. Kristi then announced that the 600 club will meet at 5:00 p.m.; the Writers will meet after our recess. 18 Marilyn Mittan took the podium and reviewed participation for the memorial committee. President Reidy thanked the Davenport ladies for the quilt that they presented to her. The meeting was recessed at 3:30 p.m. 19 Sunday Session, April 15, 2007 Memorial Service Iowa State USBC Women’s Bowling Assn., Inc. Kristi reported the Iowa Bowling Council had met on Saturday afternoon and they have awarded 14 $300.00 scholarships. The other item of unfinished business is the smoking issue. President Reidy asked the teller committee to pass out the ballots. Kristi instructed the delegation to vote yes if they want the tournament to remain smoke free, or to vote no if they want smoking to be allowed. Kristi advised the name page on the ballots are stapled incorrectly on the top of the ballot pack instead of the bottom. If leaving the room, the ballot will need to be surrendered at the door. The tellers picked up the ballots. President Reidy then called on USBC Field Representative, George Martin, to give us his message. George noted there has been a lot of involvement and cooperation from volunteers. George told us that all bowlers are now in WinLabs. He also told of the WinTournament program and its use. USBC is continuing improvements and more efficiency. The computer age is here, the youth are very knowledgeable, get them involved with it. Bring youth into the leadership roles, they’re willing to learn. Public Relations from USBC, for the 2nd year, National Bowling Week is set for August 25 through August 31, 2007. USBC and the proprietors have joined together and involved the media. Keep improving communication. There will be a limited Pro Women’s tour on ESPN, anytime bowling is on a major network that 27 is a real plus for bowling. George commented that Bowl for the Cure will be continued, and adding in the BVL, bowlers have contributed over $1 million this year, this gives bowlers a great image. There is still a decline in membership, improvements here still take effort. 10 years ago we had 33% more. Some good news is that the youth are losing fewer members. Continue with respect and pride, leaders, programs and ourselves. President Reidy took the podium once again and announce the results of the vote, 97 yes, 43 no and 4 illegal, the tournament will remain a non-smoking event. Kristi called on Gail Huerter, chairman of the nominating committee for her report. Gail corrected her report, WIBC should be USBC. The committee inadvertently placed Norma Rose on the ballot although her credentials were received after the deadline. Therefore, Norma Rose’s name was removed from the slate. Gail commented that nominations can be made from the floor. To the officers, directors and delegates assembled at the 1st annual meeting of the Iowa State USBC WBA. The nominating committee places the following names on the ballot: 1st Vice President Director #1 Director #2 Delegate to the national meeting 2008 Alternate to the national meeting 2008 Marilyn Mittan, Luzerne Carolynn Lee, Burlington Kristi Reidy, Independence Charla Green, Fort Dodge Kristi then asked Marilyn Mittan to stand. Kristi asked for nominations from the floor. Jackie Mundorf, Cedar Rapids, moved for nominations cease and Marilyn be elected by acclamation, Rose Palumbo, Cedar Rapids, seconded the motion. Kristi called for the vote, motion carried. Marilyn accepted. For Director #1, Carolynn Lee was asked to stand. President Reidy called for nominations from the floor. Jo Porter, Des Moines Area, nominated Norma Rose, the nomination was seconded by Laura McDonald. Kristi asked for other nominations. Norma Rose resigned from the teller committee due to this nomination.
