Introduction
Definitions
A cover letter is a communication sent with a resume to convey a job seeker’s qualifications. Previously
cover letters were sent by mail; today a traditional cover letter might be sent by mail or included as an
attachment to an email message.
An e-note is a letter sent electronically, in the body of an email message or uploaded to a job board. Enotes are short (typically 1/3 to 1/2 of a page in length), concise, easy-to-read letters that showcase a
job seeker’s top 3-4 assets or quick career story. They’re letters with typically HALF the content of a
traditional cover letter in HALF the space, yet still communicating the WHOLE candidate message of
who, what, why, and how.
Similarities
Cover letters and e-notes share similar goals:
1. Introduce the job seeker to a specific person or company.
2. Market the job seeker and competitively position him/her against other candidates.
3. Highlight the best/the greatest that person has to offer as it relates to that specific job,
industry, profession, company, or other key point.
4. Showcase the most impressive achievements, qualifications, and other distinguishing
characteristics.
5. Move the reader to action – an email, phone call, or scheduled interview.
Differences
In comparison to the traditional cover letter, an e-note is:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Shorter and more streamlined in its content
More open and “scannable” in its visual presentation
Clear, direct, and to the point in its writing style
Highly selective and strategic in the information that is included
Focused on a finite topic and, as appropriate, a few tightly related items of information

Why and When Your Clients Need E-Notes
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
When uploading a resume to a job board or other online application.
When sending a resume via email.
When contacting people who “never” read cover letters.
When contacting people who love cover letters.
To avoid being typecast as outdated.

Why and When Your Clients Still Need Traditional Cover Letters
1. When responding to a specific posting with the need to include all the relevant information and
keywords.
2. When your client’s resume has been requested.
3. In formal, committee-based hiring.

LETTER #5: Project Highlights
Subject: IT CONSULTANT: Large-Scale Project Driver
In today’s highly competitive and technology-driven market, it is critical to retain consultants who drive
organizational transformation, business process enhancement, and technology adoption — in tandem with
strong qualifications in IT consulting, business analysis, project management, and reengineering.
Recognizing that outcomes speak volumes, I am pleased to share these key projects and results:
 NEW PLATFORM DEVELOPMENT: I drove end-to-end development of standardized, multilingual vendor
management platform for a pharmaceutical firm, replacing disparate systems across 4 countries.

Subject: FACILITIES MANAGER – Multi-Site Operations, Build-Outs & Relocations, “Green” Programs
As Director of Facilities at Mayle & Co., I ensured the efficient and cost-effective management of 7 offices, managed a $2M

Under my leadership, our operations department processed a 250% increase in claims volume last quarter – without an hour
of overtime – through process improvements, greater team collaboration, and technology implementation. It’s with this track
record of streamlining operations and amplifying profitability that I’d like to be considered for your VP of Operations position.
I’ve been referred by Doug Wilson, who would be happy to speak with you about my success in revitalizing operations for New
York Life. Knowing the challenges you face with the new operations facility opening in Oak Park, as mentioned in the Wall
Street Journal, I am confident my experience will bring positive results.
Proof of my impact on operational efficiency and corporate bottom line:
 PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS – Slashed time to release new policies in half during first 6 months as VP of Operations.
 TEAM ENGAGEMENT – Boosted attendance of operations center staff by 75% within first 6 months with recognition and
collaborative programs.
 TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION – Improved production 40% in billing department through modernization of technology
and transition to a paperless environment.
I welcome confidential discussions of how I may add additional value to MetLife. I will contact your executive assistant early
next week to schedule a meeting. In the meantime, please see my enclosed resume.

paragraphs or hard-hitting bullet points.
4. Revise your closing if needed for the e-note format and style.
SAMPLE LETTERS
22) Alison Towers (cover letter)
23) Alison Towers (e-note)

 Content has been reduced selectively – both core competencies and achievements
 Closing content is tighter
Letters contributed by Cheryl Simpson, Executive Resume Rescue, info@executiveresumerescue.com
24) Matthew Robinson (cover letter)
25) Matthew Robinson (e-note)
Key Points:
 Leisurely opening in cover letter is transformed into a to-the-point opening in e-note
 Cover letter includes more details, intangibles, leadership style, personality
 Bullets edited down to 1 line each for e-note
26) Steven Anders (cover letter)
27) Steven Anders (e-note)
Key Points:
 E-note retains the double-bullet structure of the cover letter
 E-note retains unique information about leadership style and team approach
 Closing of e-note is direct and to the point
28) Mary Jean Chen (cover letter)
29) Mary Jean Chen (e-note)

Part IV: Pricing and Selling E-Notes
Pricing
Our Recommendation: Price e-notes the same as cover letters. Why?



Writing an e-note takes roughly the same amount of time as writing a traditional cover letter.
Both letters require that you formulate a strategy, choose the right information, put all of the
information together into a cohesive story, format, edit and proofread, and advise your client
on how to customize or use the letter.
You’re not getting paid by the word – you’re getting paid to create a letter that drives the
reader to action.
Typical Fee Range for a Traditional Cover Letter



Range: $50 to $350
Average: $85–$150
Executive: $200–$300
Sales
Why mention to your clients that you’re writing e-notes and not traditional cover letters?
1. Shows you’re on the leading edge in job search.
2. Gives you instant differentiation from other career professionals.
3. Communicates that you’re going to educate them and help them manage a job search that will
work in today’s modern job market.
4. Gives clients confidence that they’ll be perceived as savvy job seekers.
Benefits to selling clients both a cover letter and an e-note:
5. Gives clients multiple tools they can use as appropriate for every aspect of their job search.
6. Makes it easy for your clients to edit the appropriate letter whatever the situation.
