E-Summit – Today’s Modern Cover Letter: The E-Note Handouts Brought to You by The Resume Writing Academy www.resumewritingacademy.com and Career Thought Leaders Consortium www.careerthoughtleaders.com Bookstore www.wendyenelow.com/bookstore.php Wendy Enelow & Louise Kursmark July 12, 2013 Introduction Definitions A cover letter is a communication sent with a resume to convey a job seeker’s qualifications. Previously cover letters were sent by mail; today a traditional cover letter might be sent by mail or included as an attachment to an email message. An e-note is a letter sent electronically, in the body of an email message or uploaded to a job board. Enotes are short (typically 1/3 to 1/2 of a page in length), concise, easy-to-read letters that showcase a job seeker’s top 3-4 assets or quick career story. They’re letters with typically HALF the content of a traditional cover letter in HALF the space, yet still communicating the WHOLE candidate message of who, what, why, and how. Similarities Cover letters and e-notes share similar goals: 1. Introduce the job seeker to a specific person or company. 2. Market the job seeker and competitively position him/her against other candidates. 3. Highlight the best/the greatest that person has to offer as it relates to that specific job, industry, profession, company, or other key point. 4. Showcase the most impressive achievements, qualifications, and other distinguishing characteristics. 5. Move the reader to action – an email, phone call, or scheduled interview. Differences In comparison to the traditional cover letter, an e-note is: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Shorter and more streamlined in its content More open and “scannable” in its visual presentation Clear, direct, and to the point in its writing style Highly selective and strategic in the information that is included Focused on a finite topic and, as appropriate, a few tightly related items of information RWA E-Summit: Today’s Modern Cover Letter: The E-Note © 2013 Louise Kursmark & Wendy Enelow • Page 2 Why and When Your Clients Need E-Notes 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. When uploading a resume to a job board or other online application. When sending a resume via email. When contacting people who “never” read cover letters. When contacting people who love cover letters. To avoid being typecast as outdated. ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ Why and When Your Clients Still Need Traditional Cover Letters 1. When responding to a specific posting with the need to include all the relevant information and keywords. 2. When your client’s resume has been requested. 3. In formal, committee-based hiring. ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ RWA E-Summit: Today’s Modern Cover Letter: The E-Note © 2013 Louise Kursmark & Wendy Enelow • Page 3 Part I: E-Note Structure and Format Structure Meaningful subject line that communicates: Why you’re writing Important identifying facts Reason to open the email EXAMPLE 1: Subject: DIRECTOR OF SALES – Sales Turnaround Leader, 10-Yr Record of Exceeding Quota EXAMPLE 2: Subject: V.P. of Operations – Life Insurance Industry Executive, MBA To-the-point opening – a short paragraph (typically 1 or 2 sentences) that immediately sets the tone and conveys the most important information. Why? Writing an e-note takes roughly the same amount of time as writing a traditional cover letter. Both letters require that you formulate a strategy, choose the right information, put all of the information together into a cohesive story, format, edit and proofread, and advise your client on how to customize or use the letter. You’re not getting paid by the word – you’re getting paid to create a letter that drives the reader to action. Typical Fee Range for a Traditional Cover Letter Range: $50 to $350 Average: $85–$150 Executive: $200–$300 Sales Why mention to your clients that you’re writing e-notes and not traditional cover letters? 1. Shows you’re on the leading edge in job search. 2. Gives you instant differentiation from other career professionals. 3. Communicates that you’re going to educate them and help them manage a job search that will work in today’s modern job market. 4. Gives clients confidence that they’ll be perceived as savvy job seekers. Benefits to selling clients both a cover letter and an e-note: 5. Gives clients multiple tools they can use as appropriate for every aspect of their job search. 6. Makes it easy for your clients to edit the appropriate letter whatever the situation.
