Craven County Schools School Bus Garage Mechanic Job Description KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS: Positive attitude and good physical health and daily work attendance Ability and knowledge to make cost effective repairs Knowledge of bus/truck mechanical operations Working knowledge of bus/truck maintenance service procedures Knowledge to identify bus/truck repair parts Ability to diagnose the cause of operating defects in school buses Organizational skills for accurate record keeping Ability to gather and evaluate data Ability to accurately enter data (typing skills both alpha and numeric entries) Working knowledge of basic computer skills required for mechanical operations Working knowledge of DPI, Trans. Services, Preventative Maintenance Manual Ability to assist in purchasing decisions for inventory needs Ability to understand and give supervisory oral and written instructions Ability and skill to maintain effective working relationship with mechanics, bus drivers, school personnel and general public PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform MI’s and PM’s on a regular basis within required time frame Make emergency repairs on service calls, generally without assistance Make and assist with cost effective repairs Assist team members in mechanical procedures Schedules routine work in a timely manner Complete work in compliance with safety and quality standards Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory, when needed Assist in ordering of needed parts and supplies, when needed Assist in determining major equipment needs for the garage Provide proper care and use of SBG equipment and vehicles Assist with neat and orderly organization of shop area Assist and perform complete service maintenance procedures of a school bus Assist with general shop duties as perceived or requested Assist with the positive public relations of school system operations Perform other duties as assigned or perceived QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: maintain NC Driver’s License with a CDL Class A with endorsements to operate a school bus, fuel truck and wrecker School bus mechanic position is defined as a “safety sensitive” position; therefore, subject to pre-employment and random substance abuse screening Subject to fingerprinting for a criminal background check Health physical is required upon employment, a DOT card is NOT required high school graduate or equivalent Craven County Schools are a Tobacco Free Environment, employees are not allowed to use tobacco products on or in school property Maintain personal set of tools (up to 1 1/4”) necessary for job performance PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: physical ability to perform duties of a heavy duty truck mechanic on a daily basis close visual acuity to operate diagnostic and computer equipment perform repetitive motions while carrying up to fifty pounds be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, climb, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, and hear WORKING ENVIRONMENT: bus garage area without air conditioning and outside locations garage work and road work (bus inspections) are subject to weather conditions duties require handling bus/truck parts duties require changing large truck tires meeting room and parts storage area is located in a two level section of the bus garage minimum and occasional exposure to automotive/diesel fumes JOB BENEFITS school system employee with full state benefits employee only, paid health insurance; family coverage at additional cost paid leave days, employee earns one sick, vacation and holiday* day per month uniforms are provided for each employee (work shoes are not provided) THE CRAVEN COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER AND DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE ON THE BASIS OF GENDER, RACE, COLOR, NATIONAL ORIGIN, DISIBILITY, PARENTAL OR MARITAL STATUS OR RELIGION.
