Moonbeams & Fairytales : Jimi Saga (2) 66/67 (Revision 3 OCTOBER 2005) This set/compilation of HENDRIX recordings surfaced somewhere around 2002 from indistinct origins, as Jimi Saga 66/67. It was a collection of all the available HENDRIX material, STUDIO (sessions, takes, mixing), live performances, and interviews, at the time of SAGA’s assembly, for the period of September 1966 through December 1967 inclusive. We do know two versions of SAGA were produced at the time; this version contains officially Hendrix material; the other set does not. Inserted in as one track from CDR boot “You Can’t Use My Name!” The BASE REFERENCE SYSTEM used here for determining the particular provenance of track(s) was……… “FROM THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN STUDIOS” and its conjoined twin, “JIMPRESS”. JIMPRESS: www.jimpress.co.uk Other references used were UNIVIBES: www.univibes.com DOUG BELL: http://home.earthlink.net/~ldouglasbell/jimi.html PLUG YOUR EARS: http://www.cs.ru.nl/~tvdw/pye/ and obligatory for general reference ASK THE AXIS: http://www.digitalhighway.co.uk/axis/index.asp plus EYE WITNESS (Valkhoff) & EXPERIENCE THE MUSIC (Belmo/Loveless) ALL the above are labours of love: exemplary, indispensable. BUT we needed to settle for one system and balance the occasional variances between them. FTBFS/JP was chosen simply because it is the most accessible, and updated more regularly (and corrected more thoroughly). Doug Bells’ is largely based on the FTBFS/JP system, though it also uses UV listings, and ventures out on its own from time to time. UV is not updated as often, AND it has ONE distinct DISADVANTAGE, NO track timings, which makes “gumshoeing” all the more difficult. Where there were/are differences of opinion, both UV and DB were consulted, and based on the evidence of our ears, (and sometimes only our eyes) we would take a view, AND failing any real conclusion on any given matter, FTBFS/JP would decide. Even so, there are one or two matters still “floating round and round”. THE WIND CRIES MARY Jan/Feb 67 etc., for one. Mitch(’s) (Mitchell’s) recollections (FTBFS V2) of these sessions don’t really ring true if you look at a calendar for 67. He cites that Friday night (January 13th 1967) the original ‘ragged demo’ version(s?) were cut, and they came back the following Tuesday (17th) to ‘get it right’. WRONG!! 11th Jan 67 was a Wednesday, when we know that the ORIGINALS were recorded. The following TUESDAY was 17th when NO RECORDING took place. (Although JHE et-al WERE back in London at the time). Neither were the second TWCM’s done at Kingsway, as Mitch recalls- see below. Doug Bells TWCM refs on the 15th are the WRONG DATE. Should be 11th Jan 67 (or 3rdFeb.) See JP 70 p28 for (1&2). (UV cross-matches that). JP 70 indicates there was some TWCM stuff done on the 3 rd FEB, but DB makes no mention of TWCM on that date; UV states that there were sessions that day (3rd Feb.), to the point of stating the actual time of day the boys fell out of the door at Olympic Sound Studios, the following morning - 06.30 (on the 4th!) So, DOUG BELL & SAGA have 15th as a date for TWCM recordings. BUT, 15th Jan 1967 was a SUNDAY, and (AGAIN) there are no records of ANY JHE recordings done on that day. Check Day to Day Diary UV #7: having played a club in Nottingham (14th Saturday), JHE went to Yorkshire (NE England) afternoon of 15 th for gig that night. HOWEVER, they (JHE) were back in London for GIG on Monday 16 th (night). (For those of you who know nothing of SIXTIES ENGLAND, this journey, from and to LONDON, even split over 3 days was some undertaking!) SO DOUG BELL’s/SAGA DATES ARE WRONG (or TYPO). THE NEXT VIABLE DATE for recording TWCM (as previously stated), was the 3rd of FEB 67. SO EITHER THOSE ‘MARYS’ were done on the 11 th Jan, OR 3rd Feb. To validate our point of view, UV has TWCM’s [1065 & 1464] as on the 11th. (NO 15th, you notice). FULL positive definition from FTBFS V2 p157 not forthcoming either, quote “…It would seem that TWCM (3) comes from that second session. (17th)”. (Make of that what you will). And just to add more grist to the debating mill, in Chas Chandlers interview with the (said) Brian Matthew (date unknown, but of that time), he states, categorically, that “..the whole thing was done in about 25 minutes..” Are the waters any more, (or less?) clear than before?? …And RED HOUSE for two. Two dates are listed for the Red House sessions. 13th Dec. 66 & 29th Mar. ’67. (Eddie Kramer alludes to a third in ‘early April 67 (see below). If a third session did take place its not documented anywhere, so IF it occurred, it MAY have been a mixing session before Are You Experienced went to the presses.) I/(we?) had this nagging doubt that Red House as The RH (2, 3, 4, 5 & 6) which are as one on some releases – OOTS 1 (Demos 67) & 2 etc., (29th March 67) just seem so crude, raw, and experimental… unsophisticated; unpolished; embryonic even! They would seem to fit the 13th Dec 66 CBS studio run ups... BUT Jimi NEVER went backwards when developing stuff, and it was my original opinion that these recordings were back to front chronologically. The musical 2 fact did not seem to fit the pattern of Jimi’s (normally) progressive work. OOTS 2 reviewed in Jimpress 57 no dates are clarified in article (wonder why?). OOTS 2 review in Univibes 29 is VERY DATE SPECIFIC. SO, ONE golden rule broken? FTBFS does not hold sway? UV does, at least as far as RH is concerned... OR DOES IT? The clincher, to let Red House Stay in the order you now find it, is that Redding states (in that cutting from AYE? Ltd liner notes for Polydor CD 521 036-2 (1993)), that he did not play a bass guitar in the DEC 66 sessions... THE bass guitar in the approximate 11 minute session we have is more than apparent...and were cut with JHE intact. IF NOT, that presumes that the bass lines of the Dec. 13th might have been added some time later? (by Jimi?). After the immediate notes (below) follow two separate reviews below (repeated verbatim), firstly from Jimpress/Jon Price, (Feb. 1994) the latter by the irascible and fastuous, Michael “Conspiracy Theory” Fairchild. Known Red House sessions: 13 Dec - sessions for the Track Records RH Red House (1) with the Chas Chandler chat at the end 'yeh you should put that one on' original AYE album Red House (90) with Chas Chandler chat at beginning 'why don't you try' AND (as above) at end OOTS 2 29 Mar - sessions for the Reprise RH Red House (2) (3) (4) (5). (5) is the basic Reprise Smash Hits without the added effects. Red House (6) is the polished version of (5) (without Jimi's chat at the beginning). Originally on Reprise Smash Hits. Red House - on this list (official, different mix) is version (5) polished up with Jimi saying "another words we're cookin" etc. at the beginning. Or version (6) with Jimi comments at the beginning added. EXTRACT FROM Jimpress # 25 JON PRICE. Review: Out Of The Studio: Demos From 1967 aka OOTS 1. (Feb 1994) JIMPRESS #25: “….Next come four different cuts of Red House (11.00).... Take 1 (0.00 - 1.32) stops at the beginning of the second verse after which you can hear Noel being pulled up by Chas Chandler about the way he is playing his part. Take 2 (1.47 3.28) cuts off in the middle of the second verse when Chas whistles and says, "Start again." Jimi replies, "Yeah, yeah, 'cause when I hit that wrong note...." Chas says, "Cue it in." and we are into Take 3 (3.37- 6.39) which gets into the solo but is cut in the middle when Jimi fluffs a note. Here there is a break in the tape. There then follows a short piece of amusing dialogue: Jimi: “One little thing throws me off. Ok here we go. Mitch: Can we have some of these lights off? Jimi: Oh those lights. That's what it was, Oh Lord! Engineer: Can't turn any more off because it's a fire exit. Jimi: In other words we're making up all this smoke in here; right? In other words we're cooking; right? Is that what you're tryin' to say (laughs). Ok here we go!” What we get in Take 4 (7.07 10.57) is the version of 3 Red House that was to find its (very belated) way onto the US 'Smash Hits' album except that here there is no echo present. This version now heard for the first time in its original 'straight' format shows that there are some rough guitar phrases, which were subsequently hidden by the clever use of echo. If this was considered to be the take of the song then the question must be asked why did they go on to record the later (?) 'Are You Experienced?' version? Eddie Kramer recounts that work first started on the song "at CBS, then later at De Lane Lea, Chandler recorded several different versions until deciding on an acceptable take. Hendrix tried the song a number of ways, singing and playing live, as well as laying down the rhythm and one of the guitar tracks. Not perfected at this stage, 'Red House' would be completed only in early April; until then Hendrix would continue to make further refinements." To try and pin down an exact recording date for 'Red House' seems an almost impossible task. It has been stated that two versions were recorded at CBS on Tuesday 13th December '66 and it is perhaps possible that the first three try-outs here are from that session. A pointer to this could be Chas telling Noel how to approach the bass line after the first take. Take 4 sounds as if it is also from the original CBS sessions. It could be that the version that was finally chosen to be released was from De Lane Lea on Wednesday 29th March. Probably there are other recorded (but missing) takes between Take 4 here and the definitive version which is sadly missing from the recent official (re- re-) re-release…..” EXTRACT FROM BOOKLET for AYE? Ltd’s Polydor CD 521 036-2 (1993) FAIRCHILD. RE: Red House RED HOUSE: "I was largely influenced by blues artists when I first started," Jimi said, "but I was way up in the North West, in Seattle, and they don't have too many of the real blues singers up there. Where I really learned to play was down South, Red House is a kind of R&B number which might make the Top 500. It's a slow blues that we recorded in England when we first got together over there. Noel plays a $5 guitar that he bought off Alan Freeman, which is held together with bits of sticky tape and makes a great sound." The first takes of Red House are thought to date from the group's first session at CBS Studios on Dec. 13, with Mike Ross as engineer. Chas remembers "It was just wing’d in the studio, just standing around talking for five minutes, and then record it, (like, only 11 minutes – if only one, brief, session? - ed), that was it." "I actually played a guitar on the original Polydor recording of Red House," Noel said, "there's no bass on the original recording. Hendrix said, 'We're gonna do a blues in B' and I said show it to me on the guitar, because I liked to play along on rhythm to familiarize myself with a sequence. We ended up just recording that." While Kramer confirms that several versions of Red House were attempted during the AYE? sessions, with the track finally being completed "only in early April", the Dec. 13, 1966 CBS session is considered the origin of two takes which were released separately on two different albums. The first appeared on the original Track AYE? Album in 1967, and the second version was included on the Warner-Reprise Smash Hits LP in America in June 1969. "In those days it was always very weird," Noel figures, "I could never understand why, if you're in a European band, all the record companies used to re-mix or swap stuff about for the American market. It had nothing to do with the band." Between these two released takes of Red House, it is the later Smash Hits version which was chosen for MCA'S rerelease of Are You Experienced? Jimi's vocal is more developed while his guitar lines build flawlessly to a synaptic climax." I knew where I was at when it came to specialist blues scene," said Jimi, "'specially from my experience back in the States. The blues is what I really dig and the blues is what we're supposed to dig. But we don't want to play blues all the time; we just don't feel like it. We want to do other things. If I'd had two bluesmen with me we would have gone straight into one bag, the blues. That's not for me. This way we can do anything and develop our own music. Red House was released on our English LP, but everybody was scared to release it in America, they said, 'Man, America 4 don't like blues, man!' Blues is a part of America, It means Elmore James and Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson, it means Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley. It doesn't necessarily mean that folk blues is the only type of blues in the world. You can have your own blues."
