YOUNG AUDIENCES OF SAN DIEGO
Founded in 1963, Young Audiences of San Diego is the local chapter of the nation’s leading provider of arts education services. In 2005, City Moves! (a non-profit dedicated to dance education) and Young Audiences merged. Working together, we’ve expanded and diversified our board; our staff has grown to four full-time equivalent positions; and we are infused with new energy, new programs and new ways of thinking.
MISSION Through the creative arts, we INSPIRE, motivate and challenge children to achieve their full potential; we PROVIDE professional development for teachers and artists; and we LEAD the community in advocating for more arts education in schools.
We provide work to professional artists in order to pass along diverse cultural traditions to succeeding generations of San Diegans.
ABOUT YOUNG AUDIENCES Now celebrating our 44th school year, Young Audiences of
San Diego (YASD) is the oldest and largest San Diego non-profit whose sole mission is arts education, encompassing music, dance, theatre, visual arts and creative writing. Part of the national Young Audiences network, YASD supports local education agencies, grades
K-12, filling a gap with our arts education programs.
OUR AUDIENCES AND ARTISTS are as diverse as the population of San Diego County.
Last year our artists served over 50,000 students with 3,100 programs at 170 schools and community sites.
EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES are more than the typical assembly program. These age-appropriate performances connect directly to state and district content standards in the visual and performing arts, literacy/language arts and history/ social science.
IN ADDITION TO ASSEMBLY PROGRAMS YASD offers an array of artist residencies and student and teacher staff development workshops. YASD selects artists based on the ability to work well with students and demonstrated excellence in their artforms.

WORKSHOPS, MASTER CLASSES, RESIDENCIES AND STAFF
DEVELOPMENT
YOUNG AUDIENCES OFFERS FOUR TYPES OF HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES TO
SCHOOLS
#1 THE STUDENT WORKSHOP
A workshop is a single, 30 to 50-minute classroom session with one or two artists.
Workshops can reinforce a performance or focus on a particular aspect of an art form.
Students have the opportunity to work closely with an artist and to participate more fully.
While a stage performance may demonstrate elements of dance, a workshop allows the students to experience dance by doing it!
#2 THE MASTER CLASS
Young Audiences’ master classes are workshops for advanced students of a particular art form. They can focus on techniques or on career choices. Master classes by YASD’s professional musicians for school instrumental music programs are a big plus.
#3 THE RESIDENCY
Artist residencies offer students a chance to explore elements of an art form in depth while teachers can use the residency as a staff development opportunity to learn how to teach lessons themselves. Residencies are normally for a minimum of three classrooms and take place one day a week for at least nine weeks. Each week’s lesson builds upon the previous week’s lesson. Residency lesson plans are provided weekly, and align with the
California Content Standards in the Visual and Performing Arts for the selected grade level.
We strongly recommend that time be set aside for artists and classroom teachers to collaboratively plan the residency.
#4 TEACHER PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
The STAR (Stimulating Teaching through A rts Residencies) program:YASD’s teaching artists present model lessons for teachers, enabling classroom teachers to enhance both their skills and student learning in the arts and other subjects. In-service Arts Workshops:
YASD artists conduct in-service workshops in a particular art form for teacher professional development. Teachers may find new techniques and entirely new ways to teach a subject.
Inservices can be tailored to a school’s specific needs. These workshops are a great way to help teachers become knowledgeable and comfortable enough to infuse singing, dance, theatre and visual art into every-day classroom programs.
FERN STREET CIRCUS
Clown Otis (Fern Street Circus Artistic Director, Garry Irvingwhite) shows students how a narrative story can be told through the art of circus. Students will learn how the elements of character, movement, music and circus skills combine to create a circus production that tells a story. CHALLENGE GRATN DONATION OUTREACH
WOULD YOU MAKE A CONTRIBUTION TO HELP US MEET THIS CHALLENGE?
The Gerald T. and Inez Grant Parker Foundation , in recognition of Young Audiences ’ accomplishments in arts education and future potential to reach hundreds of thousands more young people in San Diego County, has made a generous grant of $20,000 to Young
Audiences and set a challenge. Our goal is to reach out to the community to inspire
$17,100 in new donations for our programs by Dec. 31, 2006, and the Parker Foundation will donate an additional $7,100.
Young Audiences ’ programs not only enrich students, but provide specific academic and social benefits. Our programs instill self-discipline, build empathy for others and increase critical thinking skills. Young Audiences
’ carefully selected professional actors, dancers, storytellers, musicians, poets and visual artists bring high-quality arts education programs and even meaning into some young people
’s lives. Our after-school arts programs engage at-risk youth in positive activities that connect students to school and encourage students to complete school.
We invite you to partner with us so that we can continue to provide these life-changing programs. Please make a donation or increase your donation, in support of our work, to help us reach our goal of $17,100, and meet The Parker Challenge early.
You may clip the donation form from the facing page, fill it out and mail it to Young
Audiences along with your check.
And don
’t forget to remember Young Audiences in your will.
