Office hours: By appointment only if you would like to meet in person. From Monday to
Thursday I will be checking my emails regularly, expect to get my response within a 12 hour
period Instructor’s anticipated online times: Monday through Thursday from 8:00 – 9:00 pm. All
hours are Pacific Time. On Fridays and weekends, I will not be available for chatting, but,
occasionally, I may log on to monitor your progress, reply to e-mails, or check & post
assignments. The times above are not written in stone and I may find it necessary to adjust
during the course as needed. I may be available at unannounced times.

Course Description

The Spanish 123 course continues introducing students to new vocabulary and
grammatical structures by building upon what already learned and expanding their knowledge
of the language beyond what acquired up to Spanish II. This course develops listening, reading,
writing, and speaking skills through a variety of interactive audio and video activities. Students
will work at their own pace through individual activities. Authentic video and audio material will
be used as well as required online tutorials for grammar concepts’ explanations as part of the etextbook. Students will learn about cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world and will
communicate with the instructor and classmate via chat and e-mail.

Outcomes
After completing this class, students should be able to:






Demonstrate listening comprehension skills by accurately writing exactly what heard,
answering questions related to the information heard in a monologue, a dialogue or an
interview format provided by native speakers.
Demonstrate speaking ability by expressing increasingly more complicated thoughts,
and utilizing the vocabulary and grammatical constructions learned in a prompted
dialogue, an interview, or in open-ended questions of increasing difficulty. Produce
original dialogues during pair/group activities and role-playing. Ask and provide general
information, and reproducing proper intonation and adapting verbal communication to
purpose and audience.
Demonstrate reading ability by getting the main idea of what read, understanding the
general tone of the writer and category of reading material, giving special attention to
the target language punctuation, and deducing meaning about what is read by making
educated guesses using cognates and context to facilitate the comprehension process as
well as previous learning. Making inferences referred to text and discuss what read.
Demonstrate writing ability by creating structurally correct affirmative, interrogative
and negative sentences of increasing difficulty, mostly in the present tense, present
progressive, or simple past (preterit) in role-play situations, descriptive paragraphs, and
summary sentences from reading passages minimizing orthographic errors.
Identify cultural information through the introduction of theme-specific or
contextualized vocabulary, and the description of photographs, as well as viewing
authentic video material centered on the world of the target language. Recognizing and
talk about differences and similarities between the cultures.
Demonstrate knowledge of parts of speech by correctly classifying verbs’ modes and
tenses, distinguishing between regular and irregular verbs and different pronouns
categories; show noun-verb and noun-adjective agreement; describe nouns, adjectives,
pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions; recognize and apply correctly
adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and pronouns.
How outcomes will be met:
You will meet the above outcomes if you complete your assignments, participate in class, and do
the following:









Study something related to Spanish every day of the week for 1-2 hours per day. Try to
hear, speak, read, write, and memorize vocabulary every day.
Always begin with the assigned sections in the Textbook and do not forget to watch the
tutorials for the grammar sections.
Follow the calendar!!! Working a little bit every day is the key to success.
Complete all the activities in the calendar for that day. Use your textbook as a reference
tool to complete the workbook exercises.
Check the feedback I give you, please go to “Notifications,” which is located in the
AVENTURAS website, on the main screen. There I post corrections I make on your
assignments and tests.
Do Pronunciación assignments after the workbook. Listen to the audio activities online
as many times as it takes. You are training your ear, and that takes time and repetition.
It is essential to log in canvas at least once a day.
Keep up with the worksheets, verb tables, and Power Points lectures posted on the
Canvas site under “Modules”. I will post answer keys to some of the worksheets and
verb tables too.
Explore the extra stuff that will make this language fun and interactive – conversations
with native speakers, web sites, music, movies, newspapers, magazines, children books.
Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to speak and write more
complex sentences. In addition, students should be able to create short yet well organized
paragraphs about topics covered during the quarter applying newly acquired vocabulary and
structure. Students are expected to improve considerably spelling accuracy and punctuation.
Students should be able to demonstrate increased listening and reading ability by responding
with more precision to authentic recorded and/or written material. Aside from discussing past
event, students should be able to talk about future and conditional actions, hypothetical
situations, influence other’s opinions, express doubt & disbelief, express possession, and making
direct and indirect request to someone as well as responding to them. A C- grade minimum is
advised to move on to the next level.
Topics Covered

We will cover lessons 11-15 in their entirety with areas of lesson 16 at the discretion of
the instructor. (You may see all lessons displayed on the Aventuras website; please ignore what
already covered and/or not covered this quarter.)
Topics covered will include: VOCABULARY: Home electronics, computers and the Internet, the
car and its accessories, house, household and daily chores, nature, the environment, recycling
and conservation, city life, money, banks and post office, health and well-being, exercising and
nutrition, professions and occupations, workplace and the interview, the arts, movies, TV,
current events and politics, the media, and natural disasters. GRAMMAR: Formal and informal
commands, por and para, reciprocal reflexives, stressed possessives adjectives and pronouns,
relative pronouns, the subjunctive, past participle used as adjective, perfect tenses, future,
conditional , si clauses. CULTURA: Use of cell phone and cybercafés, Lake Titicaca, the Andes,
the Sierra Nevada de Sta. Maria, the metro, Luis Barragán, natural spas, health benefits, Cesar
Chávez, Contemporary Art Museum in Caracas, Fernando Botero, social protests and the new
Latin American leaders, Argentina, Panamá, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, República
Dominicana, El Salvador, Honduras, Paraguay, Uruguay.
Calendar
● Check the course calendar everyday (before you log-on to AVENTURAS). You will have to log
in directly in Aventuras using your username and password. I am going to e-mail the Calendar
the first day of the quarter and you can also find it on CANVAS under “Calendar”. Save it or print
it for easy consultation. The calendar will list when a new lesson begins by its title, the quizzes &
test dates, projects, deadlines, and holidays. The dates listed on the e-textbook AVENTURAS
site are Lesson deadlines, but the dates listed on the calendar are a suggestion for setting the
pace of the class. If a test date or any other important deadline should change, I will post the
news under “Announcements’’ and on the “Discussion Board” on our Canvas site.
Communication
● Communication will take place via e-mail and chat in CANVAS only. If you need to contact me,
e-mail me to my CANVAS account. Please try to write in Spanish as much as possible.
CANVAS and the calendar should be checked at least once a day.
If this is your first on-line course, it's bound to be a bit confusing at the beginning. Don't be
afraid to ask questions or admit you're having trouble with something. Feel free to email me to
my CANVAS account or post your questions in the student to student discussion board. Your
classmates may be able to answer before I do.

IMPORTANT: NO MAKE UP QUIZ/TEST/EXAM WILL BE PROVIDED. HONOR DEADLINES
by following our course calendar. Remember tests are always open for 36 hours and
they will be due at 11:59pm of the due date. PLEASE NOTICE THAT YOU WILL BE
TAKING THE LESSON TESTS AND THE FINAL EXAM ON CANVAS.
Late Homework policy: I will not accept any late homework. If you experience

Late Discussion policy: If you turn in late a discussion post you will get a 3 point penalty
per day. One week after the deadline the discussion will be closed for comments.



If you cannot commit to this course,withdraw promptly rather than incur an inevitable
and GPA-damaging failing grade (F). Remember to check the Bellevue College Fall 2014
calendar for the last day to withdraw.
Your grades will be recorded and viewable on the CANVAS.
Please note: Even though there are five chapter tests, only four will count towards your
final grade. I will drop the lowest test score. If you miss a test you will be able to drop
that test. Make sure to turn in the homework of the Lesson on time, even if you drop
the test. However, this does not apply to the Final Exam. You must take it to receive a
score for the Final Exam.
Online conduct & etiquette



Be respectful of instructor and classmates at all time. No vulgar and offensive language
will be tolerated. Do not abbreviate words but use correct spelling when typing in
Spanish. English IM and SMS lingo you normally use do not correspond in Spanish and
should not be used in our course. ¡Gracias!
Collaboration on assignments is allowed to a certain extent. However, I do not accept
identical answers on tests, discussion posts and Oral projects.
Please do not use an electronic translator from English into Spanish. Especially
do not use it to write sentences or paragraphs. You will receive a 0 on that work,
and believe me I will notice it right away.
BC E-mail account
The college requires that all credit students have an official Bellevue College (BC) student email account for the purpose of receiving official college communications which may include
but is not limited to: campus security alerts, campus closures, Information Technology (IT)
security alerts, financial aid notifications, enrollment and registration transactions or
