16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM – NCA GLOBALLY
MYANMAR
There will be two events
1) NCA and partner – YMCA will organize the event: Anti-Human trafficking event with
stakeholders, religious leaders, community members to promote the YMCA’s work in the
area, and encourage and honor the outstanding work of the Community Based Group
members who worked closely with YMCA in rescuing the human trafficking victims in
China. The event will include the photo contest about anti- human trafficking.
2) NCA as a member of GEN (Gender E, GEN will be organizing the event together with
WON (Women’s Organisations Network).
16 Days of Activism Working Group 2015 will organize the 16 Days of Activism Against
Gender Based Violence Campaign “Raising the Curtain on Gender (In)-Equality and
Violence against Women in Myanmar” on 8 December 2015 (Tues) at Sky Star Hotel,
Yangon.
Currently the working group members are GEN and WON together : ActionAid, CARE
Myanmar, Christian Aid, Gender Equality Network, International Medical Corps, Kachin
Women Peace Network, Lutheran World Federation, Norwegian People’s Aid, Norwegian
Church Aid, Oxfam, Phan Tee Eain, Pyoe Pin, Save the Children, Students Christian
Movement, Thingaha, Women’s Hands Myanmar Foundation, Women’s Organizations
Network of Myanmar and 1 Technical Resource Person.
GEN and WON member agreed to conclude the theme to be “From Peace in the Home to
Peace in the World: Engage Men to End Violence Against Women”. The three objectives
of the event is
1) Awareness raising on recognizing violence as violence (It should not be normal),
2) Taking/sharing responsibilities to end VAW and
3) engaging men to end VAW.
These 3 Objectives are based on service providers, gender budgeting and PoVAW law.
NCA and working group members are planning to organize a multi-stakeholder event to
bring together various key stakeholders who all have a role to play in ending violence
against women in Myanmar. The Forum will explore concepts from the draft Prevention
(and Protection) from Violence Against Women Law (PoVAW Law); will look at existing
and still needed service provision for the survivors of violence against women; and will
highlight the importance of gender budgeting in all endeavors to eliminate violence
against women. The event will also include some edutainment including video clip and
film screening.
Target Audience : WG members agreed to invite 300 person (tentatively); newly elected
Parliamentarians from Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw, Ministries involved in
PoVAW WG (will invite DG level), Paralegals and male role models, GEN members, WON
members, WLB and community members and media.
There will be Media Campaign for promoting awareness on 16 days activism as well. The
plan is as follow :
1) FM radios
2) Facebook Campaign : WG discussed to do Q & A style competition in 16 days activism
face book page. WON will prepare 32 Questions for the Facebook Campaigns related to
the Violence against women, prevention of violence against women and engaging men to
end violence against women, and any creative questions and will send to the working
group by 15 Nov 2015. Saya Billy will finalise the Myanmar Version of the questions for
Facebook Campaign
5. Film Screening : After the 16 days activism event, film screening will be shown. At the
next working group meeting, we need to discuss detail which film we will show.
