“Lost Treasure” Story by Bonnie Burton Lyrics by Samantha Newark from the song “Blue Sea” Art by Jessica Hickman Description/Inspiration/Tone of comic: The tone and look of the comic is of an old-timey pirate girl and her small ship. She has no crew, but she’s determined to find a lost treasure that means the world to her. The only words in the comic are Samantha’s lyrics to her song “Blue Sea” which would be nice to have in the panel written in old-fashioned script cursive. The only words of dialog are at the end of the comic when we discover the lost treasure is her best friend – a Kraken, who is equally happy to see her. I’m a big fan of nautical comics like Tony Millionare’s “Maakies” and “Sock Monkey” comics, as well as the Cartoon Network animated show “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.” So I think Jessica could do a great job showing that kind of tone in style, especially since her style is very beautiful and ethereal. I’m also a fan of comics that let the images tell the story more than the words and dialog, but I think Samantha’s lyrics really help tell the tale and set the mood as well. NOTE TO LETTERER: The only text in each panel are the song lyrics…which I would love to see it an old fashioned pirate script/font written consistently somewhere in the panel… The only line of dialog is in the very last panel spoken by the pirate girl PAGE ONE PANEL 1 Description: Our heroine pirate girl has a determined look on her face as she looks through an old fashioned telescope at the ocean while sailing rough seas on her small ship. The weather is dark and forbidding and stormy…. (Song lyrics: LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY WHERE THE NIGHTS ARE COLD AND LONG…) PANEL 2: Description: She’s now facing a large map pinned on the wall of the interior of her ship by the main wheel. She marks the map as though she’s tracking her progress towards an X. She looks lonely and sad…. (Song lyrics: I WROTE A STORY IN MY HEAD ABOUT A PLACE WHERE I BELONG) PANEL 3: Description: Show the tiny pirate ship being tossed around the giant waves…. (Song lyrics: BUT THE SEA WAS ROUGH AND WIDE AND MY LITTLE BOAT SO SMALL) PAGE TWO PANEL 1: Description: The pirate girl stands bravely on the bow of the ship as giant waves crash onto the boat almost knocking her over. (Song lyrics: HOW COULD I EVER FIND MY WAY WITH THE WAVES SO BIG AND TALL?) PANEL 2: Description: The pirate girl’s ship passes mermaids who watch her ship as it sails by …. (Song lyrics: BLUE SEA CARRY ME LIFT ME UP HIGH SET ME DOWN DRY) PANEL 3: Description: Our pirate girl is standing on the bow of the ship with her old timey nautical star compass at night, looking hopefully up at the night sky’s constellations. (Song lyrics: SOMEHOW MY LITTLE BOAT IS STRONG I WATCH THE STARS THEY GUIDE MY WAY…) PAGE 3 PANEL 1: Description: The pirate girl’s ship is passed by much bigger, more impressive pirate ships that put her ship to shame. They ignore her as they sail by. They can’t be bothered to see what she’s up to. Our pirate girl doesn’t care. (Song lyrics: I SEE THE SAILORS PASSING BY, THEY ARE SAILING JUST LIKE I) PANEL 2: Description: Her ship continues to make its way through the ocean once again alone, and she is asleep in her bunk for the night dreaming…. (Song lyrics: BLUE SEA CARRY ME LIFT ME UP HIGH SET ME DOWN DRY) PANEL 3: Description: Suddenly we see some very large tentacles start creeping around the ship’s body, implying that it might tip the ship over in an ominous way. The ship is now almost entirely surrounded by a giant squid’s tentacle now gently shaking the ship and our girl wakes with a start… PAGE 4: PANEL 1 Description: Large panel image of the pirate girl running out on to the bow of the ship to see what’s going on… she sees a giant Kraken and its face is visible! PANEL 2: Description: Large last panel is of the pirate girl with a big smile on her face hugging the giant Kraken and the Kraken hugging her back with its tentacles. She whispers to it: "I knew I'd find you again, old friend." (Song lyrics: BLUE SEA CARRY ME LIFT ME UP HIGH SET ME DOWN DRY)
