Lesson Approach Section Enabling Objectives: With verbs and days of the month that are introduced in class, students will be able to describe annual events and holidays in the US and Japan. Students search information using website and create a calendar of annual events and holidays in Japan using MS Publisher. Completed calendar will be posted on the course website. Objectives include: Say, read, and write days and months in Japanese correctly Identify proper verbs to describe activities on annual events and holidays Identify the type of verbs and conjugation of present tense Collect information in English and describe them in Japanese Use computer to write Japanese sentences Introduction/Motivation: I will display a poster of annual events and holidays. I will explain that in this unit, they will learn how to say days and months in Japanese with more verb conjugation practice of present tense. I will tell that they will also learn about annual events and holidays in Japan. I will also tell that by the end of this unit, they will be able to describe activities on calendar and write Japanese sentences using computer. Materials, technology hardware and software to be used for the introduction A poster of annual events and holidays Power Point slide-1: Topic Rationale for using the materials/technology selected: Students understand better by seeing pictures than reading written explanation about foreign activities. Pictures represent culture of Japan and will draw interests. II. Lesson Development Section Learning Activity 1: (Knowledge Base) I will show slide 2: Months from PowerPoint presentation, then slide 3: days of a month to introduce vocabulary. Students practice by repeating after me. I will distribute Handout 1(Days of a Month & Days of the week) and students practice vocabulary as a pair work. Then I will introduce days and month in sentences, such as “Today is May 12th,” “what is today’s date?” I will show Power Point slide 4: and introduce sentences such as, “What is the date of Thanksgiving this year?’ ”What date of the week is it?”, “What do you do on Thanksgiving?” and discuss about activities. 2 ANNUAL EVENTS AND HOLIDAYS Materials, technology hardware and software Power point slide-2: months, 3: days of the month, 4: Thanksgiving Day Verb flash cards Rationale for using the materials/technology selected Using the power point to show new vocabulary is effective to draw students’ attention to one place as I explain and let them repeat the words. The handout is used when students do their pair work facing with their partners to see vocabulary as they practice. Summary/Transition to learning Activity 2 I will show slide-5 to review and practice verb conjugations. I will use verb flash cards for the drill of verb conjugation. Learning Activity 2: (Guided Applications) I will distribute Handout-2 and explain the role-play, which is the next activity. In the role play, one student acts as a Japanese international student asking about annual events and holidays in the US and another student acts as an American student answering questions. I will do a demonstration with one of the students. During role play, each student completes the chart on the handout. Students also use Handout-1 to check vocabulary. Materials, technology hardware and software Handout-2: direction of activity Rationale for using the materials/technology selected Handout is useful when students work as a pair/group because they take those when they move in the classroom during the activity. Summary/Transition to Learning Activity 3 I will show slide-6 to discuss about the difference of activity on Valentine Day in the US and Japan. I will show short video about Valentine’s Day in Japan. I will tell that students are going to find out about Japanese annual events and holidays. Learning Activity 3: (Independent Applications) I will show slide-7 to explain about the next activity, which is to make a calendar of annual events and holidays in Japan. Students work as a pair. Each pair is assigned to one or two month depending on the number of students in class. Students use computer for collecting information on Internet and then they make a calendar page using MS Publisher. Each page must include sentences that describe the date of the annual event/holiday and activities, pictures/photos, list of new vocabulary. Verbs must be labeled with verb group. I will show slide-8 to explain how to convert alphabets into Japanese fonts. I will also distribute Handout-3. Annual Events and Holidays 3 Materials, technology hardware and software to be used in Learning Activity 3 Power point-Slide 7: Project- Making Japanese annual events & holidays calendar Power point-Slide 8: Typing Japanese Font Handout-3: Japanese font system and list of useful websites Online dictionary - Popjisyo http://www.popjisyo.com/WebHint/Portal_e.aspx - Rikai.com http://www.rikai.com/perl/HomePage.pl?Language=Ja Research - Google http://www.google.com/ - Kids web-Japan http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/explore/index.html - Web-Japan Japan fact sheet http://web-japan.org/factsheet/index.html - JP Net http://web.mit.edu/jpnet/holidays/Events.shtml Computer: one computer for every two students Rationale for using the materials/technology selected Power point slides provide information of activity. The handout helps students to follow directions and see the list of suggested websites. Using computer to write sentences in Japanese by converting alphabets into Japanese fonts is helpful so that students can communicate with other Japanese speakers (native/non native) through Internet in the future. At this stage the object of the lesson will be achieved. Assessment Students take on-line quiz on vocabulary in the lesson. Each word is given in English and students must type correct word in Japanese. Students also do word scramble puzzle of months and days.
