Students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Arunai Engineering College, Tiruvannamalai designed a hybrid power bicycle. Meeting the reporters at the college on Friday, Principal V. Ramanathan and Director (R&D) M. Arumugam explained the innovative projects their students had developed. One of the projects was e-bicycle using hybrid sources for smart grid environment, for which they have designed a model as well. The bicycle utilises solar energy produced by photo voltaic arrays and alternate current produced by dynamo attached to the tyre. The hybrid power sources ensure improved performance. Apart from running the vehicle, the power could be used for headlight and charging mobiles. An important innovation employed in the project was the battery’s ability to charge and discharge energy simultaneously, which was not conventionally possible with e-bike batteries, the students said. The vehicle moves at about 20 kmph and can transport a weight of about 75 kg. The project is guided by S. Ganeshkumaran and developed by P. Parthasarathy, A. Praveenkumar, K. Jeevarathinam and R. Sekar, all final-year students. They said that the design could further be improved by incorporating a micro-wind turbine to complement power.
