02. Endocrine Practical 1 – Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) Degree: BMed2406 v2.0 Haydn Allbutt (28/7/15) 1 02. Endocrine Practical 1 – Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) Degree: BMed2406 Convener: Isabel Arnaiz Date and time of Classes (for 2015): Mon 3/8/2015 9am-1pm CPC FDS 1 (9-1) & Learning Studio (9-12) + FDS 2 (12-1) Wed 5/8/2015 9am-1pm CPC FDS 1 & 2 Thur 6/8/2015 9am-1pm CPC FDS 1 & SEM 2.02 Fri 7/8/2015 8am-12pm CPC FDS 1 & 2 No. of Classes: 8; two classes run simultaneously over 4 days No of students per class: Number of students (Class 1) Number of students (Class 2) Monday ~35 Wednesday ~30 ~35 ~30 Thursday ~36 ~35 Friday ~23 ~23 Students working in groups of: Each student takes their own measurements individually Class Summary (Class notes currently unavailable, will fill this in when they are posted again) This class allows the students to practice performing a glucose tolerance test using a 50g glucose drink in preparation for the next class. Special Notes for class Each student will need a laptop When the class is held in FDS 1 & 2 simultaneously (ie Wed 5/8/15 and Fri 7/8/15) the dividing doors should be shut We currently use the Accu-check performa blood glucose monitors. The test strips for these are approximately $49.69 for a box of 100 strips. Each student tests their blood 12 times over the Endocrine 1 and Endocrine 2 class (6 times per class; following the protocol used by Jennie Brand-Miller’s lab to determine the glycemic index so 6 samples are need), therefore cost of blood strips is ~$6 per student. – Check with adel where he currently gets them and if this is the cheapest Not all students will participate. At the moment the number of consumables specified for this class assume all enrolled students will participate. It is alright to do that for this class as the glucose drink has a long shelf life. 2 Each enrolled student will need a 50g glucose drink (volume not important, current drink is 50g in 300mL) – so will ned 247 glucose drinks for BMedSci in 2015 Need 2 x urine test strips per student (494 in 2015), students test urine glucose at T=0 and T=1hour. Find out from adel where he gets the Urine test strips to put here Check we have spare batteries for blood glucose meters - What sort of battery do we need? Staff Needs o Friday 5pm: Put gear on trolley ready for Monday morning – CPC staff will get drinks from basement o Monday 8am: setup class Equipment Setup General in Class Bio waste bins – for blood test waste A4 sized number from 1 to 6 to use as station numbers with the name of the station.
