Domestically produced goods 12HM007XK Hanako Rikkyo Hello, everyone. Thank you very much for coming to my presentation. My name is Hanako Rikkyo. I’ll take about domestically produced goods and imported goods. I hope you will enjoy it My stance I am in favor of buying domestically produced goods a lot more. It is not bad to buy imported goods. But, there are a lot of advantages in buying domestically produced goods. I will tell you why we should buy domestically produced goods. Introduction Which do you like, domestically produced goods or imported goods? I think there are people who prefer domestically produced goods, and other people who like imported goods, or some others who like both. Well, I would like to discuss good points and bad points of domestically produced goods and imported goods. Background 1. Definition Domestically produced goods mean products which are made or grown in our own country. And imported goods mean products which are made or grown in foreign countries and imported to Japan. 2. Some bad cases caused by imported goods or foods In 2008 January, gyoza which was made in China contained agricultural chemicals, and a lot of people became sick by eating it. This case made Japanese worried. There were others cases. In 2001, BSE became an issue. BSE spread not only among cows but also cats, sheep, and so on. Some people caught BSE. Reason Now I will explain why we should buy domestically domestic products. There are three reasons why we should buy more domestically produced goods. 1. The first reason is ‘reliability’ of domestically produced goods. Their reliability is higher than imported goods. 2. The second reason is that the food safety level of Japan is different from the level of foreign countries. Our safety level is high. 3. The last reason is that to buy domestically produced goods encourages and improve Japanese economy. Why I support to buy domestically produced goods Now let me tell you more details about these three reasons. 1. Reliability of domestically produced goods We can know the individual producers who are growing vegetables or raising animals on farms. We can know the producers of eggs, meat, and so on. In this way, we can have trust between consumers and producers. Today we can also have access to the Internet and get more information about the producers and their products. 2. Food safety level of Japan Look at this table. This shows the number of people who have food poisoning in some countries. The number of Japan is smaller than other countries. Japanese food hygiene law is more strict than foreign countries. Therefore we can get such number. Moreover, foreign countries have their own laws and they may be using chemicals which Japan forbids. So some of their food might not be safe. 3. Encourage and improve the Japanese economy This is my main reason. On March 11th last year, we had a big earthquake. Because of this earthquake, The Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Station was damaged, and a lot of radiation was given off. The radiation which was given off covered the soil or seeped into the soil. That has badly influenced agriculture and daily farming. In other words, Japanese people are afraid that vegetables and meat which were produced in Fukushima may contain some radiation. As a result, people avoid buying domestically produced goods. But, this is not good. If we don’t buy domestically produced goods, Japanese economy will become inactive. And if we buy more imported goods, we will worsen Japanese depression. Is this situation good? What do you think? Do you think this situation will bring us a better life? Conclusion In some cases or maybe in many cases, imported goods are cheaper than domestically produced goods. I think it is impossible that we live with only domestically produced goods. But, please think about not only the present time but also the future. Just think that we buy a sense of security? Is it OK to leave Japanese depression as it is? I think a lot of people answer, “No.” Buying more domestically produced goods can help weak industries, especially farming and farmers. In various fields, Japanese manufacturing techniques are top-ranking in the world. We should be proud of Japanese manufacturing techniques, and trust them. All we should do is to buy more domestically produced goods. Final remarks Thank you for your kind listening.
