Wednesday, May 12th
During the lesson we looked briefly at an overview of the topic.
• World Cities
• Mega Cities
• Sydney a Global City
• Urban Dynamics In Sydney and a Country town or Suburb (Pyrmont)
We then examined the following:
• What is urbanisation?
• Changes to the Urban pattern through time
• What are Cities, World Cities, and Mega Cities?
• The Nature, Characteristics and Spatial Distribution of World Cities
• What are the push and pull factors that gave rise to urbanisation?
Friday, May 14th
During the lesson, we looked at World Cities. We developed an understanding of the
Nature, Characteristics and Spatial Distribution of World Cities:
• What is a world city? Or How may be describe it’s nature
• What are the characteristics of World Cities
• Describe the pattern of World Cities
• Why have world cities developed
• Discuss the effects of the following globalisation, marginalisation, dominance
and dependence
• Describe the difference between global cities and mega cities.
• Examine the results of Urban Growth on very large cities
• Examine the impact of urbanisation and social changes
Tuesday, May 18th
During the lesson, we did the following:
• Reviewed the homework on the Economic and Cultural Authority of Global
Cities, TNC’s, Global networks and hierarchies.
• Examined the following topics:
o Cultural Authority and the Global City
o Global Capital flows and Global Cities
o Hierarchies of Global Cities
o London as a Global City (homework)
Wednesday, May 19th
During the lesson, we did the following:
• Review of Homework – Economic and Cultural Authority of Global Cities
• TNC’s, Global networks and hierarchies
• Cultural Authority and the Global City
• Global Capital flows and Global Cities

Friday, May 21st
During the lesson, we did the following:
• Review of Hierarchy in an urban network
• Australia’s network of Large Cities
• Notes on Rural network
• Causes of changes to Australia’s urban system
Tuesday, May 25th to Wednesday June 9th
We continued working on megacities. See the handouts on the wiki, if you missed any
of these lessons. There is plenty of material, so don’t say you had no information on
the topic. The better students will need to peruse this material and take notes.
