Grande Prairie North Country Community Church - It was another exciting and overwhelming Faith in Action event in Grande Prairie on June 22, 2014. This was our 2nd Annual event in the same community as last year, and again, we had a beautiful day to serve the Hillside Community and serve the Lord Jesus too. We hand delivered over 1300 flyers into the Community, and many of the residence had mentioned that they were expecting us again this year, and were delighted when they received our flyer. To know that this community was expecting us, really spoke to the FIA Committee about the value we brought to this same community last year, and to the positive relationship we created with the people and are building through this 2nd event. There were three different Church congregations involved in this event, and three other church congregations represented by several individuals. All together, there were 184 people at this event, and what an event it was. Many people had called before the event to ask if we could help them with a need. Some of these needs were as simple as mowing a lawn, or picking up garbage they placed on their driveway. But then there were more complex needs like moving a gazebo, rebuilding a 100ft fence, and Two New MDC Modules (October 1-December 31) If you are considering pursuing a Course of Study this fall, please register as soon as possible. If you would like more information, please contact Dr Dave Skidmore at dcs@eteach.ca Living Ethical Lives - The moral implications of the Gospel and Christian character are key themes of this module. Special attention will be given to the unique way in which moral reflection has characterized the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. Examining Our Christian Heritage 2 - Developments in the Church since 1500 A.D. is the focus of this module. repairing a cement step for an 89 year old widow (Betty) who still cares for her mentally challenged son who lives with her. A sea of orange covered this community; the RCMP received three 911 calls and 24 other calls from community residence that wanted to know what was going on. One RCMP officer came to our headquarters and was unable to describe what he was witnessing as he drove throughout the streets of Hillside. All he saw was orange, and it was everywhere! He wrote each Church a ticket, and handed them to us with a smile. There was no penalty to pay, for these tickets were “Positive Tickets” that were issued to anyone the RCMP Officers saw who were doing good things. So each Church received their ticket with a smile at our Celebration Service. We had two of the biggest garbage bins we could get, and filled these bins again and again, squishing as much garbage in as we could with an excavator. We hauled two gravel truck loads of grass clippings and tree branches out of the community as well. This was a big day. There were so many great moments during this event that left us speechless and in awe at God’s amazing goodness. And story after story was told at our Celebration Service in the evening, when young and old testified to the life-changing experience this day brought to them. We worshipped together, prayed together and laughed at the funny things that happened throughout the day in our Evening Celebration Service. We are already thinking about our next Faith in Action Event scheduled for June 21, 2015, and I believe there will be more Church congregations involved. This is only a tool. Creating relationships is the real goal to Faith in Action. Because of the first Faith in Action event a year ago, the Mayor of Grande Prairie was so moved by the results, that he invited all the pastors and spiritual leaders in Grande Prairie and surrounding communities to the first ever Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, sponsored by the City. There were over 200 people in attendance. And the Mayor realizes how important it is to hear what the Spiritual leaders have to say. This year’s event was organized by a great committee of 5 people that God put together. These people have become dear, dear friends. I can’t wait to get together again and begin planning for next year. Pastor Doug Webb Grande Prairie North Country Community Church Calgary East - Life has been busy in SE Calgary! Calgary East church held another successful Stampede Breakfast on July 6. Pancakes and sausages were on the menu. People were free to visit and connect with neighbours while they enjoyed the music ministry of the Gripping Family Singers. The children were able to participate in bubble blowing, receive a balloon animal, learn to juggle, or play in the bouncy house. Guests to the breakfast were enamoured by the unicycle-riding, fire-juggling entertainment too! Some of the conversation revolved around the new church sign (installed by Dominion Signs of Calgary) and newly paved parking lot, completed by Bow Paving. The parking lot has been a real draw for neighbourhood children who have come to skateboard, play soccer, fly kites, and hang out. Prayer Requests Pastor Steve Conklin’s family have suffered the loss of a family member and a friend in the last couple of weeks. Please pray for comfort. Pastor Gregg Rustulka (Prince Albert) has been hospitalized with high fever and extreme pain throughout his body. Please pray for relief from the pain, and effective treatment. Pastor Andrew Barker’s father, Ernest Barker had brain surgery on Monday and is in serious pain. He is also having a great challenge swallowing. Please pray for healing. Other News Kidztown just completed their 14th annual Kidztown Kollege training week with approximately 60 people in attendance. The teams came from Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer West Park, Stettler, Three Hills, and Calgary East. Because of the unavailability of Harmattan's Family Camp facilities, Matt Willks and Trent McDowell graciously allowed the event to be hosted on the youth side - while they were hosting their own ministry! The cooperation between the two camps went very well. Kidztown Kollege had Jojo Ruba, executive director of Faith Beyond Belief, as their keynote speaker. He challenged the teams to be confident in their faith and asked them to answer the provoking question, Why are you a Christian? The team members also worked on skill development for ministry to children, and led Bible lessons on Daniel for the Grades 1-2 camp. Special thanks to Rae-Lee Brower for organizing such a great week! It is our hope that these teams' summer ministries in their community parks will be a bridge for families to connect with their Christian neighbours. Riley Coulter Appointed Director of Planned Giving for Canada The National Board, with the enthusiastic endorsement of the Canadian District Superintendents, has appointed Dr. Riley Coulter as DIRECTOR OF PLANNED GIVING, effective September 1, 2014. Dr. Coulter, who will be continuing to serve as Chancellor of Ambrose University College in a part-time role following his 65th birthday in August, will be responsible for working with Canadian Nazarenes in planning for estate and charitable giving in ways that benefit families, churches and ministries of the church. He will work directly with interested persons in planning legacies that connect passion with need through annuities, endowments, giving (donor-advised) funds, wills and trusts. Interested persons should contact Dr. Coulter directly at riley.coulter@shaw.ca or 403.829.6949 for more information or to arrange for an appointment. Dr. Clair MacMillan National Director, Church of the Nazarene Canada ROSE KNOWS Hello Rose: Is it possible to submit our GTO and health care premium payments electronically? Signed, Treasurer in Training Dear Treasurer. Yes! Recently Gail Wahl of Caroline piloted this process. Below is her instructions for setting it up for yourself. My only other advice is to ensure you put policy in place through the local church board to ensure you align with the "two signature" recommendation. Gail has included some methodology below. Thanks, Rose Below is the information on fees to set up and use an EFT system that I received from the bank manager at our local ATB Financial where Caroline Church banks. The first steps for a church are to sign up for online banking and then to apply for an EFT number which allows them to create and send the EFT's. After that it is a matter of creating those EFTs using the online banking system. Bank institution, transit and account numbers need to be collected from the vendors (accounts payable) who they will be paying by EFT. If they will be offering EFT services to their church attendees to make tithes and offerings then those banking numbers also need to be collected from the church attendees. If the church is collecting from their attendees, the bank will require a PAD agreement to be signed. In order to create better accountability, we are working toward a system where one person (bookkeeper) creates the EFTs and another person (treasurer) releases the EFTS. This will make it so there are always two people involved in the process. ATB has a great online system where you can assign different levels of security to different users to make this happen. It also means that the person releasing the EFTs can do so from anywhere in the world. If you have any questions, please ask. questions as well. Have a great week! Gail And I am willing to answer other peoples Canada West District Work & Witness Project 2013 Lakeshore Bible Camp – St. Malo Manitoba Dates: Sept 22 to 29, 2013 May 17 to 28, 2014 A joint Canada West District NMI and Canada West District project Project completion summary Fall 2013 Kitchen and Dining hall replaced 9 windows, windows repaired, removed two existing windows replaced 3 exterior entrance doors, installed a roll-up door from the kitchen to the dining hall re-sided 2 1/2 sides of the exterior walls with vinyl siding framed in one crawl space access – no longer needed replaced 12” to 16” of the lower plywood supporting the structure up off the footings – much of the existing plywood had experienced water damage and some of it was rotten prepared and installed metal flashing over the exposed footing and up the supporting pony wall to prevent any moisture coming in contact with any part of the structure of the building also installed 12” of ‘blue skin’ on the flashing and lower plywood to ensure any snow (thus moisture) could not seep in behind the siding to cause moisture damage to any wood. Spring 2014 Kitchen and Dining Hall replaced about 1/3 of the bottom plate on the north side of the pony wall supporting the building – the plate, some of the wall studs, and plywood had rotted from water damage over the years built a second pony wall inside the area where the bottom plate had rotted to provide extra support for the existing floor joists – the floor joists immediately over the pony was weak and needed additional support the north wall had plywood replaced where needed, flashing over the footings, blue skin added and the wall was sided with vinyl siding the entire building had soffits and new fascia installed the crawl space joist bridging was nailed two of the exterior decks & railings were either replaced and/or rebuild to meet current building code. Installed a ‘fire guard’ in the attic to prevent a fire from spreading from the kitchen area to the dining hall area Installed drywall on the dining hall ceiling – no taping Installed wood window frames around the windows and doors in the dining hall Installed extra cross bracing in the attic to provide more support for strong winds Provided a way to exhaust the dining using the existing exterior fan Built and boarded a small room in the north-west corner of the dining hall to accommodate the kitchen fridge. - the cooling unit on the fridge could then be easily vented outside and thus not provide a heat source in the kitchen during hot summers Installed drip caps over the doors and windows on the kitchen/dining hall – silicone was applied to areas around the doors and windows where water penetration could be an issue All exterior window and door casing was painted one coat – crawl space access doors were painted one coat Chapel The roof was replaced by RP Ventures Ltd. (Calgary based company licensed to install roofs) with new laminate shingles – numerous sheathing plywood was replaced because of water damage Existing wood fascia was replaced where needed Vinyl siding, metal soffits and fascia was installed on the entire building One side entrance door was replaced with a new metal door. Two new windows at the front of the building were installed and the main entrance door reframed to accommodate a roll up garage door Additional Cabins four new windows were installed in one cabin and three in another Other tasks a trench was started to assist with draining water from an area behind the first two cabins as you enter the grounds. Many of us who were there were concerned with the large pool of water that could easily be a source of unwanted pests. The first cabin, upon entering the camp, had one corner of the supporting pylons partially under water, which could result in rotting of the ‘footings’. Mel Olsen is going to complete the digging of the trench and install drainage pipe to provide a more permanent solution to drain the stagnate water prior to the first summer campers arriving. Mel and Connie have been hired to assist with managing the Camp Grounds for this summer. Mel and Connie have had extensive experience with Camp Harmattan. The camp has a number of areas, which need attention as soon as possible to ensure the present facilities are safe and provide for the needs of the Church family for the next few years. Some of these needed improvements would assist in ensuring the rent ability of the Camp Facility. - entrance to the kitchen door requires a proper railing – safety issue - one of the Atco trailers roofs is leaking and mold can be ‘smelled’ upon entry The roofs of three of the existing cabins need to be replaced along replacing some of the wood fascia boards (rotting) The Chapel windows (covers) need to be replaced and the window trim replaced/cladded.
