Meds 2014 London Clerkship Contacts Dr. Robby Stein, CEC Chair Dr. Kevin Fung, CEC Deputy Chair Ms. Becky Bannerman, Clerkship Administrator Ms. Mary Peterson, Rural Placement Coordinator robert.stein@lhsc.on.ca kevin.fung@lhsc.on.ca becky.bannerman@schulich.uwo.ca mary.peterson@schulich.uwo.ca Introduction The Clinical Clerkship is a 52-week integrated program with six-week rotations in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Paediatrics. There are twelve-week rotations in Surgery and in Medicine. There are three weeks of vacation: one week over Christmas or New Years, one week in March and one week at the end of August. Introduction to Clerkship Week September 4 – 7, 2012 Introduction to Clerkship sessions are part of the clerkship course and will provide you with core content, including clinical skills instruction. Your attendance at all sessions is mandatory and attendance will be taken. A detailed Clinical Clerkship Handbook will be provided to you at the beginning of this week. Assessment in Clerkship Each core rotation is assessed on a “Meets Expectations” or “Does Not Meet Expectations” basis. o Appears on MSPR (a.k.a. Dean’s Letter). Differential assessment within rotations. Must meet expectations for ALL rotations. Not meeting expectations in one rotation MAY be remediated. Not meeting expectations in multiple rotations is a MAJOR PROBLEM!! “Pass” or “Fail” for the overall Clerkship course appears on UWO transcript (60% is a pass). 1 Summary of Clerkship Rotations (‡ Core) Family Medicine – 6 weeks Coordinator: Kari McLennan, CSB 2735A kari.mclennan@schulich.uwo.ca ‡ Family Medicine teaching unit in London or Mt. Rural Regional Program During the clerkship year, all students will complete a minimum of four weeks of clinical training in a small or mid-sized community in Ontario outside of London or Windsor. Students have the option of completing up to 12 weeks in a community outside of these teaching centres. Placements are available in: Family Medicine Obstetrics & Gynaecology Paediatrics Psychiatry There are a limited number of clerkship placements available for each rotation in each community. Priority for these placements will be given to students who have not yet met the curriculum requirements. Requests will then be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. While we try our best to accommodate students’ requests, some students may be required to complete additional placements outside of London and Windsor, depending upon preceptor availability. Selections will be made online via the Clerkship Selectives section of SingleSignOn with a deadline of February 21, 2012. An information session will be held in early February to explain the rural regional choices. The session will be noted in your one45 when the date and time are set. 4 Schulich Regional Clerkship Program New this year is the Regional Clerkship Program where up to six clerks will spend 30-36 weeks of their clerkship year in the Chatham community depending up on the specialties chosen. These clerks will do Medicine CTU and some specialty rotations in London. Chatham has long been a part of the SWOMEN rural program and is well suited for the new clerkship program. Enrolment is limited to the first six applicants from the Meds 2014 class. If the cap is not reached, the remainder will enter into the program by lottery. Participating clerks will pay for their own accommodation in Chatham but the cost of travel and accommodation when they come to London for CTU and selectives will be covered by SWOMEN. These students have the opportunity to participate through WIMBA, via WebCT. A detailed agenda will be sent out a week in advance. Portions of each session will be videoconferenced from London to Windsor. Sessions will also be audio-recorded and posted to WebCT. PowerPoint slides from the sessions will also be posted to WebCT. 5 Vacation Entitlement December: One week – seven consecutive days off to include either Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Normally, the weeks are December 24 to 30, 2012 or December 31, 2012 to January 6, 2013. The week off is the decision of the clinical department, although you may be asked for your preference. March: Nine consecutive days off, normally the week of March 9-17, 2013 (5 weekdays plus the weekend before and after). During the Internal Medicine rotation, the specific dates of the nine days off will be confirmed by the Department of Medicine. August: One week following the completion of clerkship on August 23, 2013. Note: If you are on a rural rotation during March Break, you may have to take a different week of vacation or pay your own travel to and from the placement as there is no funding to cover travel for vacations. 6 Clerkship Lottery Web Page 7 Clerkship Lottery We can appreciate that you would prefer to be matched to your first choice of rotation order. Every attempt will be made to accommodate your choice; however, this may not be possible if requests for a particular group exceed availability. There are eight possible choices of rotation order. The Undergraduate Medical Education office staff cannot alter the rotation order. If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact Dr. Michael Rieder to discuss the matter before the lottery runs. The Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry reserves the right to alter your clerkship assignment at any time to accommodate circumstances within the teaching hospitals. You will be assigned to the hospitals by the clinical departments. The Undergraduate Medical Education office cannot schedule you to a specific hospital.
