DM2244 Material relating to the Eichberg, Mertens and Lane families Sophie Mertens married Julius Eichberg (b.1824, Dusseldorf, Germany – d. 18/19 January 1893, Boston, USA), composer and director of the Boston Conservatory of Music, and they had one child, Annie Philippine Eichberg (b.1854, Geneva, Switzerland – d. 23 January 1927, London). Annie married twice: first on 26 February 1884 to Tyler Batcheller King LLD, from whom she was widowed, and secondly on 13 August 1898 to John Lane of The Bodley Head. Annie Eichberg Lane was author of the hymn To Thee, O Country, and of several novels, including Brown's Retreat, Kitwyk, The Champagne Standard, Talk of the Town and According to Maria, many of which were published by her husband John Lane (b.14 March 1854, West Putford, Devon – d. 2 February 1925, London). John Lane died of pneumonia on 2 February 1925 at their London home, 8 Lancaster Gate Terrace, Bayswater, London. He was cremated at Golders Green and his ashes interred at St Nectan's Church, Hartland, Devon. His nephew, Allen Lane, founded Penguin Books.
