The theme is “Red, White and News.” Registration deadline is June 6. See the back page of the May edition of Missouri Press News for all the details or view that form here: http://www.mopress.com/magazine.php ______________________________________________ -- MO Lawmakers put eight proposed amendments on ballot (By Bob Watson, Jefferson City News Tribune) -- Missouri voters could be asked in November to vote on up to 10 proposed changes to the state Constitution — and the General Assembly is responsible for eight of those requests. Secretary of State Jason Kander’s staff is going through the process of certifying the signatures on two initiative petitions submitted to his office May 4. If the petitions have enough valid signatures from at least six of the state’s eight congressional districts, they also would be placed on the Nov. 4 general elections ballots — but Gov. Jay Nixon has the power to set a special election for one or more of the Legislature’s proposals, so he could decide to move one or more of those issues to the Aug. 5 primary election. That’s where the confusion sets in concerning the New York Post’s decision to drop the comics page...The one strength newspapers and other print publications still have is that they can collect and present perhaps less timely but still relevant expanded news, opinion, and entertainment, written by vetted professionals into a convenient publication of great interest to a local market. The daily comics are one of the most popular and read sections of newspapers. Yet, they have been treated like an afterthought for a long time by the editors and publishers of dailies. As he attempted to paint a large papier mâché pig, the prospect of life without printed newspapers was laid bare right there all over our kitchen table. There I was, pink-paint wielding teenager on one side and a rather nice six-place table (bought at great expense) on the other side; crying for me to take care. “I know,” I said to myself, “I’ll get some newspaper from the recycling bin and lay it out on the table before he starts painting. That way, the woodwork will stay dark brown and any errant brush strokes will be neutralized” ...Not a discarded newspaper to be found. Are you a fact-checker? Am I? As the American Press Institute embarks on a longterm project designed to examine and improve the news industry’s process of fact-checking public statements, it’s useful to have a definition. It’s not as easy as looking it up on Wikipedia. At the end of this post, you’ll find our best definition of fact-checking. But with the caveats that 1) it’s not the only definition of fact-checking and 2) we might change it as new research and practices “In the end, I think that fact-checking prevents the spread of disinformation, [keeping it] from being worse than what it could be,” said Dr. Michelle Amazeen, assistant professor of advertising at Rider University. Which is why journalist Marie-Catherine Beuth is developing News on Demand, a mobile news service that tailors information to users’ attention spans. The app will present the day’s five main news stories as articles of varying length, curated from numerous news sources, said Beuth. Users will then be able to read about the stories that most interest them, at the lengths that best suit the time they have available. See more: http://tinyurl.com/prusmwu _______________________________________________ -- Multimedia, circa 1500: History shows info free-for-all is the norm (by Rebecca Onion, Boston Globe) -- While readers who have already moved to digital news may not notice, watchdog groups and media critics worry about diminishing coverage of both local and international affairs, and what it means to abandon the comprehensive presentation of the day’s news in one authoritative package. It can sometimes seem like what’s under threat is the standard model for how we find out what’s happening. But historian Andrew Pettegree of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland has written a new history of news that puts the dominance of newspapers in context. But then again, The San Quentin News — which was recently honored by a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for “accomplishing extraordinary journalism under extraordinary circumstances” — is hardly a typical newspaper. "Nothing gives perspective to life so much as death. Recently, doctors told me I have an untreatable form of cancer," wrote Scaife, an 81-year-old billionaire who is owner of Trib Total Media, a newspaper group representing more than two dozen daily and weekly Pennsylvania newspapers. "I fell in love with newspapers as a boy, when my father brought me editions from around the country and abroad,” Scaife wrote. “The day I became a newspaper publisher, buying the Tribune-Review, remains one of the proudest, happiest moments of my life. I believed then — as I do now — that newspapers are essential to America, and to any free and prospering nation."
