Datelines will continue to use abbreviations. AP said the change is being made to “be consistent in our style for domestic and international stories.” State abbreviations will continue to be used in lists, agate, tabular material, nonpublishable editor’s notes and credit lines. They will also be used in short-form identification of political party affiliation. Photo captions will continue to use abbreviations, too. See more here: http://apstylebook.blogspot.com/ ______________________________________________ -- APME wants to know how your paper handles website comments The Associated Press Media Editors has some questions about how news outlets handle website comments from the public. It's APME's latest effort to spotlight a news industry issue by gauging the views of journalists directly involved. For example, are names required with public comments at your website? How are comments monitored by your outlet? What value do you place on such feedback? Are online comments likely to remain a fixture at your website? APME requests responders complete a brief survey by Friday, May 9. Link to the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8YL5QTJ Use password: Comments (uppercase C) If you encounter a problem accessing the survey, email dminthorn_contractor@ap.org for assistance. Results will appear in APME publications. ______________________________________________ -- CenturyLink, “Your link to what’s next.” (MPA thanks its sponsors) For all your Broadband, Entertainment, Voice, Cloud, and Managed Services, contact your local CenturyLink representative: http://news.centurylink.com/resources/facts/mo _______________________________________________ -- SEMO Press Association regional meeting June 19 The Southeast Missouri Press Association is planning a regional meeting, hosted by the Missouri Press Foundation, Thursday afternoon and evening, June 19, in Cape Girardeau. An academic study has found newspapers are still among the most influential sources of information. The research, conducted by social scientists at the University of Manchester, found that the demise of newspapers has been grossly exaggerated. Sherwood Rowland: “What’s the use of having developed a science well enough to make predictions if, in the end, all we’re willing to do is stand around and wait for them to come true?” Science journalists and longtime readers of the magazine might have arched an eyebrow. The quote had been taken word for word, and without attribution, from an article written decades before and published by The New Yorker. The New Yorker had effectively plagiarized itself. Unfortunately, all too often journalists and bloggers pick up on these press releases without critically examining the methodology or digging further to make sure that the actual data confirms the headlines.
