Box 870311 504 University Blvd. Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0311 Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 Course Description and Hours: A semester of work experience in an approved hospitality organization for a minimum of 12 weeks working 40 hours a week (480-600 hours). Students work full-time during the semester to gain insight into hospitality management responsibilities. Students receive 4 credit hours for completing the internship. Prerequisites: RHM 175, Introduction to Restaurant and Hospitality Management is a prerequisite. Course Objectives: 1. Understand the roles and responsibilities of hospitality managers. 2. Define the organizational structure of a hospitality organization. 3. Given a specific hospitality organization, complete assigned projects to meet the preceptor’s expectations. 4. Gain hand-on experiences in a hospitality organization. 5. Apply classroom knowledge to the operating environment. 6. Have work performance evaluated by a hospitality manager. Course Assignments: Step 1: Print the appropriate information from www.ches.ua.edu/rhm click on “Undergraduates” and then “Internships” or from Blackboard Learn. Step 2: Week One: Fax the “Facility-Student Contract” and “Internships Goals” to 205-348-2982…Attention: Kim Boyle Step 3: Print and begin to complete the questions found in the Internship Manual relating to your area of concentration. Step 4: Week Six, fax your mid-term evaluation form plus a mid-term update on how you are meeting your internship goals. A picture of you in uniform in front of the company’s name is also due at this time. Send via email to Mrs. Boyle. Step 5: Ask your supervisor to complete your final evaluation form. Include TWO copies of the final evaluation in your portfolio. If you would like to take the CHS exam…the application for the CHS Exam is also due at this time. $75 (CC# or check) See CHS section of the syllabus for more explanation. Step 6: Submit all of the above original documents & final portfolio to the instructor by the end of semester. NOTE: As part of your final report, be sure to include copies of pay stubs or other documentation of your hours of work. Be sure to follow the format for your internship portfolio (Included in this syllabus). Course Policies: Due dates include the following: Week One: Fax Facility-Student Contract and Internships Goals Week Six: Fax Mid-Term Evaluation and Mid-Term Evaluation of Goals End of Semester: Entire Portfolio is Due (See Instructor for this date) Any paperwork not turned in by these due dates, will result in a 50% reduction of points for that section of the course. Policy on Academic Misconduct: All acts of dishonesty in any work constitute academic misconduct. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to cheating, plagiarism, and fabrication of information, misrepresentation, and abetting any of the above. The Code of Academic Conduct and Academic Misconduct Disciplinary Procedures will be followed in the event that academic misconduct occurs. Students should refer to the Student Affairs Handbook, which can be obtained from the student Life Office in Ferguson Center. Policy on Exams: There are no exams in RHM 469. Professional Presentation: Professional presentation includes, but is not limited to, the overall appearance of written work, dressed appropriately (in uniform when required, limited jewelry, properly groomed, etc), keeping appointments, and being on time at work. Students are expected to conduct themselves professionally as representatives of the RHM Program, the College of Human Environmental Sciences and The University of Alabama. COURSE GRADING: The final report for the RHM 469 experience will be graded on content, spelling, neatness, and timeliness of report submission. The final report is worth 200 points. Worked at least three months in the hospitality industry 2. Supervised at least two employees (note…you have two years to complete this part) 3. Submit the CHS Application along with the $75 exam fee 4.
