Week Prior (January 7-10):
Decorate classroom doors for Literacy Week Door Decorating
Contest through 1 st period classes.
Distribute and collect public library card applications.
Encourage students to bring a book from home for “DEAR” time on Wednesday, January 15 th .
Daily video announcements with teacher and student book talks.
Door decoration contest. Doors must be complete by Jan. 10 th and include the following: Must be aligned to current content/curriculum and include the passage or excerpt that was used for “inspiration,” and because Santaluces is a “green school” material must be recycled or used resources from home/school.
“Count the Books” contest in the Media Center. The student that gets the closest to guessing the correct number of books in the media center wins a prize.

Students as “guest readers”- Grade 4 & 5 students go to K-2 classes to read to students. Book recommendations given by K-1 students on the morning announcements.
Classroom door display decorated to depict a favorite class book.
Judges will choose a K-2 winner and a Grades 3-5 winner. Winners will be announced on Thursday and given a class treat.
Mrs. Kaliser will begin a 3 day “Guess the Character” contest. On the morning announcements, Mrs. Kaliser will describe a character and read a quote from the text in which the character appears. Students write each day’s guess on the same piece of paper, and submit their papers the classroom teachers on Wednesday. On Thursday, after the 3 characters are announced, teachers will pick one classroom winner, who has all 3 answers correct, to receive a bookmark and treat.

DEAR Day (Flash Mob style) Wear bright colors and carries a book with you all day. There will be some type of signal (train whistle) throughout the day where everyone will stop and read.

If you have fine arts during this time, just make sure they go to FA with a book. FA teachers will bring them out to the field.
