Santaluces High School

Week Prior (January 7-10):

 Decorate classroom doors for Literacy Week Door Decorating

Contest through 1 st period classes.

 Distribute and collect public library card applications.

 Encourage students to bring a book from home for “DEAR” time on Wednesday, January 15 th .

 Daily video announcements with teacher and student book talks.

 Door decoration contest. Doors must be complete by Jan. 10 th and include the following: Must be aligned to current content/curriculum and include the passage or excerpt that was used for “inspiration,” and because Santaluces is a “green school” material must be recycled or used resources from home/school.

 “Count the Books” contest in the Media Center. The student that gets the closest to guessing the correct number of books in the media center wins a prize.

Timber Trace Elementary

 Teachers will promote 20 minute DEAR time each day

 “Catch-ya Reading”- Office Staff to take photos randomly catching students reading (before school, on the bus, waiting at parent pickup, etc.)

 (WTTE News will promote both all week!)

Palm Springs Elementary School

 Students as “guest readers”- Grade 4 & 5 students go to K-2 classes to read to students. Book recommendations given by K-1 students on the morning announcements.

 Classroom door display decorated to depict a favorite class book.

Judges will choose a K-2 winner and a Grades 3-5 winner. Winners will be announced on Thursday and given a class treat.

 Mrs. Kaliser will begin a 3 day “Guess the Character” contest. On the morning announcements, Mrs. Kaliser will describe a character and read a quote from the text in which the character appears. Students write each day’s guess on the same piece of paper, and submit their papers the classroom teachers on Wednesday. On Thursday, after the 3 characters are announced, teachers will pick one classroom winner, who has all 3 answers correct, to receive a bookmark and treat.

Rolling Green Elementary

 A student will share a favorite book on Morning Announcements .

Work on Door Decorations. (Classes will choose a favorite book and design a door decoration to represent that book.

Grade levels can choose a theme or a favorite author, if you like.)

RIF book giveaway: Students will pick a free book on the way to the cafeteria for lunch

Santaluces High School

 Photo opportunity during lunch with friends in front of a

Literacy backdrop. Photos will be made into bookmarks to distribute on Friday during lunches.

 Librarian from Lantana branch public library will come to campus during lunches to hand out public library cards.

Starlight Cove Elementary

 DEAR Day (Flash Mob style) Wear bright colors and carries a book with you all day. There will be some type of signal (train whistle) throughout the day where everyone will stop and read.

Seminole Trails Elementary

Guest Readers - Recorded and shown via Vodcast (possibly guests from community)

 Volunteers read to classes (send home letter to elicit parent volunteers ahead of time) as well as resource staff on campus to volunteer in classes as well.

Starlight Cove Elementary

 WISH4 Story time. Listen to a story on WISH4 and students will be given a magic wand reader to follow along with the story.

Seminole Trails Elementary

 Everybody Reads!

 Primary and Intermediate will all read the same book and interact via a blog (Kid Blog) We will choose a title from We Give Books

TEACHERS- each student decorates a mini book template with their favorite book to hang on door or windows

Seminole Trails Celebrate Literacy 2014 Memory Quilt

 Each class will describe a favorite class book using a template shared. These will be combined making a quilt that will be displayed in media center on Friday. (It will be revealed on Friday’s morning announcements)

Seminole Trails Elementary

Class Letters to an Author - Each class will write and send a letter to a favorite author. A list will be provided with authors that are known to accept and respond to letters for teachers ahead of time.

Timber Trace Elementary

 TEACHERS- Dress as a favorite book character! It can be as simple as a hat or as elaborate as you want to be! Have FUN! The kids LOVED this last year!

 McDonald’s Night to benefit Literacy (4:00-7:00- teachers sign up to volunteer)

Parade: 1:00-1:30 - Teachers may parade their class outside on the courts to show their outfits, and to see all the book character costumes and vocabulary costumes from other classrooms.

Decorate hallways: Classes can decorate their hallway creatively with vocabulary.

Santaluces High School

 Cafeteria Movie Lunch- will be movie based on a book!

 DEAR time in the field-(1:30-1:45)- teachers will bring their students out to the field for school-wide DEAR time (each student has their own book, teachers may want to have a sheet or blankets to sit on).

If you have fine arts during this time, just make sure they go to FA with a book. FA teachers will bring them out to the field.
