It also find uses in the production of food acids. Handling and Storage Maleic Anhydride must be stored in a cool, dry, well ventilated area. Areas where there is high potential risk of fires must be avoided. Out door or detached storage is preferable. The material should be separated from other storage, especially from alkali metals or amines. It must be very well protected from moisture and oxidizing materials. Precautions Maleic Anhydride is a powerful irritant. In contact it causes conjunctivitis , cornea damage, nausea, headaches, pulmonary edema and dermatitis. Personnel must not be exposed to the concentrated vapours. Protective clothing, chemical goggles, gloves and if necessary gas mask should be worn when handling the material. 3 Months from date of production . NB : Due to the effect of atmospheric moisture on Maleic Anhydride the solidification point may be decreased and the Maleic Acid content may exceed the limit quoted if the material is stored for a lengthy period under humid conditions.
