Collection Care section : currently 5 posts
To coordinate collection care, storage
management and object movement across the
organisation.
To
implement
strategic
actions for sustainable storage solutions.
To manage the Collection Care section in
delivering and supporting the Museum’s
exciting and busy programme of work.
Collection Care and Preventive Conservation
: To
manage
the
requirements
for
collection
care
and
preventive
conservation across all the Museum of
London sites and out-stores.
 To manage the work of the Collection
Care
section
and
ensure
that
the
standard of collection care provided is
appropriate
to
the
needs
of
the
organisation.
 To communicate the work of the section
to the Head of Department by providing
frequent verbal and written reports.
 To manage and advise on the work of the
Collection
Care
Conservator
as
the
person
prepares
and
unrolls
a
new
Integrated Pest Management programme,
drawing together current work in this
area into a strategic plan.
 To
manage
the
Collection
Care
Conservator as the person coordinates an
Environmental
Monitoring
programme,
drawing together current work in this
area into a strategic plan.

To
ensure
the
Collection
Care
Conservator manages and maintains the
Museum’s Hanwell and other electronic
environmental data gathering equipment
and communicates any major issues to the
Head of Department
To
ensure
that
information
on
the
environment and pests is efficiently
collated and readily available.
To discuss with the Collection Care
Conservator strategies for improving the
environment,
particularly
for
new
galleries, loans, temporary exhibitions
etc and to discuss any issues with the
Head of Department.
To coordinate the work on an existing
Hazardous Collections and Audio Visual
Collections
projects,
including
organising
the
risk
assessments
of
specific
collections;
updating
databases, statutory registers and logs;
implementing
necessary
storage
or
disposal resultant from the project.
To manage plans to work with museum
colleagues and Hub staff to improve
storage of the collections, including
managing a cleaning programme for all
the storage areas; and with conservation
colleagues,
of
specific
stored
collections.
To undertake periodic collection care
research relevant to the Museum and its
work.
Emergency Planning :



To be a lead player in the department
management
team
planning
and
implementing measures to care for the
collections in case of an emergency
incident.
To lead in training staff in practically
dealing with an incident, particularly
as it relates to the stores.
To ensure emergency supplies are kept up
to date and are distributed to relevant
parts of the premises.
To update emergency plans with the Head
of department and to take the lead on

updating emergency Call Out lists for
the Museum sites.
To be a top tier Emergency Assessor and
be available, on an occasional basis,
for answering emergency phone calls and
even call outs to sites out of hours, as
agreed in the Business Continuity plans.
Storage and storage improvements :






To manage all stores across the museum
sites.
To contribute to the Museum’s Strategic
Storage Review Committee coordinating
future storage requirements.
To work with colleagues on the Museum’s
ReStore, stores upgrade, project to plan
and implement recommendations of the
above SSR committee.
To put in place measures to raise the
standards of Museum storage to attain
agreed Benchmark Standards, using the
information from recent Storage Needs
Analysis, coordinated by the HUB.
To manage and coordinate large stores
improvement projects - including, where
necessary:
putting in project bids to
raise funding for the proposed project;
procurement
of
external
support;
purchasing of storage equipment and
management of the logistics of moving
collections out of and into stores.
To be the lead expert in the Museum on
suitable storage equipment and packing
materials
To arrange , when required, for the
disposal,
transfer,
or
auction
of
unwanted Museum collections
Object Movement Management :


To coordinate the logistics of object
movement across all Museum of London
sites and externally, eg for loans.
To review and re-launch object movement
control procedures.
To manage, coordinate and participate in
object movement with the Object Handlers
and other collection care staff as

required.
To manage the day to day work of the
Object Handlers and Collection Care
staff
to
ensure
that
staffing
for
projected moves are sufficient to needs.
To ensure that object moves and lifting
and other equipment are risk assessed
and used in accordance with the relevant
health and safety regulations.
To
organise,
as
required,
the
contracting-in of
external specialist
companies to move specific objects or
collections ; and handle the procurement
process, as required by the Museum’s
financial regulations.
To ensure that vehicles used by the
Object Handlers are fit for use, in
collaboration
with
the
Facilities
Department, and used in accordance with
the Museum’s Drivers Policy.
General departmental requirements : To be part of, and contribute towards,
the
senior
management
team
of
the
department.
 To undertake section management work,
including
undertaking
Performance
Management and Development reviews and
setting
work
objectives
for
staff;
managing H&S of staff; putting in place
a communication strategy for keeping the
section informed.
 To
maintain
accurate
records
and
documentation using established systems,
including
the
Museum’s
computerised
database Mimsy XG.
 To
represent
the
department,
in
a
liaison
role,
on
cross-departmental
projects and meetings.
 To support the placement of volunteers,
and teaching of students and interns
 To
participate
in
and
periodically
conduct events for the Museum’s public
programme.
 To manage the general administration of
both the Collections Care section and
the
department,
including
answering
enquiries, managing project finances,

Circumstances:
Working
Conditions
ordering materials and supplies and
other work as necessary.
To undertake such other duties as agreed
with the line manager, commensurate with
the level and scope of the post, that
may be necessary from time to time.

Due to the nature of this position, it
is exempt from the Rehabilitation of
Offenders Act and requires a standard
Criminal Records Bureau disclosure in
the event of successful application. A
criminal record may not necessarily be a
bar to employment, as any decision will
be treated on its merits and individual
circumstances subject to the Museum's
overriding obligations to protect the
children and vulnerable young adults in
its charge, members of the public, the
safety of the Museum's staff and the
Collection.

There will be the need to work at all
the Museum’s
sites, including the
Museum of London, Museum in Docklands,
Mortimer Wheeler House, and occasionally
in out-stores, eg at Convoys Wharf, and
at Wroughton, or wherever collections
are stored.

Occasional evening or weekend events
work, about every 4 or 5 months, is
required and time can be taken off in
lieu, or as flexi-leave

The post will be on the Museum’s
Emergency Call Out list, and may be
required to answer enquiries or be
called out to Museum premises out of
hours
or
at
weekends,
on
a
very
occasional basis.

Lifting and moving of light to
moderately heavy objects will be
required from time to time, as assessed
by risk assessments
You will often be sitting for extended
periods either at the workbench or at
the computer desk


You will need to have good dexterity of
hands and fingers to operate tools,
handle objects, operate a computer
keyboard.
You may be required to periodically work
in basic conditions in some of the
temporary storage facilities
