Cathal Shevlin
Managing director of Shevlin Engineering, Belmullet

We were doing a lot of work in the fishing industry, agricultural sector, local quarries, stuff like that.

[Cathal]
Belmullet’s a small place, work is hard got, the economy was on its knees. Yes, we’ve been very lucky
with Shell coming to town, as I say.

Various views of the town and harbor
Various views of earthmoving works
[Cathal]
We focused on what their requirements would be.

[Cathal]
I looked at what Shell do, what their history was, and how they operate, and then we looked at gas
plants in general.

Split screen:
Various scenes of construction site from a distance
Two views of gas plants
[Cathal]
Initially we would have started on the beach in Glengad, on the landfall.

Two views of industrial site under construction
[Cathal]
A lot of the work we’ve done was labour intensive, and then as time progressed, we got bigger
machinery to do heavier tasks, and bigger tasks, and to do the job quicker.
Split screen:
Workers on the construction site in safety vests and hard hats
Large indoor machinery at work
[Cathal]
We were scared to even be buying the machinery, but after a few months things settled down and we
got into what we done, and that was work for Corrib, and that made it a lot easier.
Split screen:
More shots of large indoor machinery at work

[Cathal]
We’re a bit cocooned from the outside word.

[Cathal]
It’s had a huge impact on us. When we go for a pre-award meeting with another company now, one of
your first questions is who have you worked for? So you tell them, we worked on Corrib, one of the
biggest projects in Europe, and they’re impressed by it.

Footage of plant and production

[Cathal]
We’ve done a lot of schools around the country. Our Lady Secondary School was one of the first
schools we’ve done. It was a very challenging build.

[Cathal]
We’ve a lot of work in the UK at the moment, doing a big job in Wembley Park.

[Cathal]
We’re beating UK companies because we have the standards behind us to show that a local company
had achieved this, this was a huge thing for us.

[Cathal]
Shell have helped us a lot. I suppose we were lucky that it happened to be an industry to come in that
needed services that we could provide. It gave us the opportunity to employ more people, which was
very important in the area. It’s great to look at people that you went to school with, and they’re
working alongside you, and there’s great satisfaction from that.

And they have educated us in terms of safety, in terms of work practices, so now we’re going to use
that in future jobs.

[Cathal]
[VO] In turn, it lets us go out into the world and compete for bigger jobs. We’re prepared to compete
with other companies, and that’s what we’re doing at the moment.

[Cathal]
In general it’s thanks to Shell, to what they’ve taught us along the way, and the way they’ve helped us
out.
