Description of specific tablet activities:
This lesson will enable the children to record a class football game and provide a 2-3 minute
commentary of said game.
Step by step guide
Preparation
The teacher will show the children a selection of commentaries from various football matches. The
class will discuss which commentary they prefer and the reasons for their selections.
The teacher will question the children regarding the commentary e.g. How many commentators were
there? Why were there two? What's the difference between both commentators? (The teacher is
helping the children identify the "professional commentator" and the "sport expert commentator")
Suggest the children practise commentaries in their pairs of various activities they see at break time.
Ensure tablets are charged and relevant apps such as Video, Audio Memos, Explain Everything and I
Can Animate are downloaded and working properly.
Put the children into pairs of mixed ability
Lesson activity
As part of our P.E. Lesson the class will play a game of football. Each pair will be given the
opportunity to video record a piece of footage of the match using the video record function on the
tablet.
Subsequent to the match the teacher will present each piece of footage to the class using the IWB.
With teacher guidance the class will select the piece of footage most suitable for us to complete the
project (the teacher will be looking for a piece of footage that is eventful and action packed).
The pupil pairings will be allocated time with the learning support teacher to record their commentary
with one being the professional and the other being the expert commentator. The children will be
encouraged to try both roles and as a pairing decide which commentary works best.
Conclusion
Each pairings commentary/video will be looked at on the IWB. The whole class partake in a class
discussion providing positive feedback and constructive criticism if needs be.
Skills/topics supported by this lesson will include speaking and listening, reporting skills as well as
writing skills. The children will work on their presentations skills using the apps such as Video, Audio
Memos, Explain Everything and I Can Animate as well as using the camera function on the ipad to
record the footage of the match.
