THE FURMAN ADVANTAGE and FRANCIS M. HIPP
SUMMER 2014 INTERN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
www.furman.edu/engaged
Revised 11-13
Program Definition: The Furman Advantage and Francis M. Hipp Fellowship Programs provide
competitive fellowships to students who obtain full-time summer internships that meet the eligibility and
criteria guidelines of the program.
Criteria: The application will be evaluated based on:
*The internship experience itself AND the quality of the information provided in the application.
* The student and the internship site supervisor sponsor must describe:
- the evidence that the internship will result in a meaningful experience in which the
intern is involved in significant professional work
- the opportunity the internship provides in applying academic studies to the work
experience
- the relationship of the internship to career goals
Application to the Program: The application includes three sections: student, organization, and faculty
and is due by March 3, 2014. Students may submit either the complete application or for internship(s)
that are not finalized, at least the general information and question #1 in the student section of the
application by March 3rd to meet the deadline. See next page for Frequently Asked Questions about the
application process.
Eligibility:
*Student Eligibility: Preference for summer 2014 fellowships will be given to students who will graduate
in December 2014 or May 2015, then to students who will have another summer to pursue an internship
during their Furman career. Students must be returning to Furman as a full-time student after their
internship to be eligible for Furman Advantage.
*Hours and Weeks: Internships must be full-time (35-40 hours per week) for a minimum of 8
continuous weeks. If a student is enrolled in a May Experience course, then the eight weeks of full-time
work devoted to this internship will begin AFTER the end of May Experience. Students not enrolled in
May Experience may begin their internship during May.
*On-Campus: Internships on the Furman University campus will not be eligible for a Fellowship stipend.
*Special programs: The Fellowship program does not fund workshops, institutes, travel study programs,
courses, or other learning experiences in which the primary purpose is to expand one’s knowledge/skills.
*International: Applications for international internships in areas listed on the government sanction list
http://www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/ or on the State Department Travel Warning
List http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html will not be eligible for the Fellowship
Programs.
*Courses: Receiving a fellowship does not prohibit students from participating in a Furman University
summer internship course. Students must consult individual academic departments for the course
requirements. Students who apply and want to take other summer courses (beyond the Furman internship
course) must include course information in the application and explain how the student plans to meet the
requirements of both the internship and the course work during the summer.
Stipends:
Stipend amounts awarded to the student will vary based on the amount of funding provided by the
sponsoring organization and the student’s demonstration of financial need. The base stipend will be:
Organization Payment
Fellowship Stipend for Student
$0-$1,500
$1,500
$1,500 to $2,900
$3,000 minus Organization’s Payment
$3,000 or more
$0
An additional stipend amount, beyond the base stipend, may be awarded by the Furman Advantage
Committee for students with demonstrated financial need.
Fellowship Application Process- Frequently Asked Questions:
Where can I find the Furman Advantage application?
Electronic copies of the application are available on our website: www.furman.edu/engaged or
www.furman.edu/intern The application has three parts: student, organization and faculty sections and all
three sections must be submitted before the application is reviewed by the faculty committee.
What if I have applied for an internship, but haven't received an offer by the Furman Advantage
deadline?
Students should complete the student section only of the application (listing each potential internship and
answering question #1 for each internship), then submit this form by the application deadline. This
incomplete application will be filed as 'pending'. Then, once the internship is finalized (before the
committee completes their review by the end of March), submit the updated student section to answer all
the questions and have the organization and faculty member complete their section and submit it directly
to furmanadvantage@furman.edu The Furman Advantage committee does not review applications
until all sections have been submitted.
What if I miss the application deadline? Will a late application be accepted for the Furman
Advantage program?
Students may submit initial applications after March 3rd. However, these applications will be considered
only after all applications submitted on-time (by the March 3rd deadline) are reviewed. Therefore,
funding for late applications may not be available.
What does the internship organization have to do for the Furman Advantage program?
The internship organization must complete the Organization section of the application and submit it
directly to furmanadvantage@furman.edu (and cc: the student) by the Furman Advantage deadline or
as soon as possible in March. The program also requires that the organization complete an on-line
evaluation (sent via e-mail) at the end of the summer internship.
What does the faculty member have to do for the Furman Advantage program?
Students will need to select a full-time faculty member who knows them, explain the internship to
him/her, and ask him/her to complete the faculty section of the application and submit it directly to
furmanadvantage@furman.edu
When will I know if I am approved for a Furman Advantage fellowship? Once the application is
complete; i.e., the student, organization and faculty sections are all submitted; the Furman Advantage
Committee (made up of faculty members) will review the application. Notification of the status of the
application will be sent by e-mail after the committee meetings, which occur between mid-March and
mid-April. Approved students will then be asked to attend a meeting in April to complete the paperwork
required for the fellowship.
If I get a fellowship, what am I required to do? Furman Advantage fellows are required to post
weekly to an on-line conference, complete an evaluation and reflection paper (and provide photos) at the
end of their internship, and then, be available to speak about their summer experiences as requested and
on Furman Engaged! Day in the Spring: April 17, 2015.
