Welcome.
Fry is one of six day/boarding houses. Each one is different but all have the same overall
aims.
These are to provide a safe and happy environment where you can work, rest and
play. This can be achieved if we all remember that, as members of a community we
should;
(i) Respect one another and one another’s property.
(ii) Protect the weak against the strong.
(iii) Remind the casual and the thoughtless of their
obligations to the school and the house community.
We hope you will make lasting friendships whilst you are here and that you will prosper,
making the most of your talents.

Tutors.
Each pupil has a tutor. You will soon find out who this is. They will register you each
morning at 8.40 a.m. in the house and also at 13.30 in your tutor room. They will also be
responsible for monitoring your progress whilst at the school. Please try to help your
tutor by telling him/her about anything you have achieved or any worries you may have.
They are there to help and support you.
House Office.
This is an important place for finding information or making contact with duty staff. It is
also where you can take pocket money cheques, valuables, forms which have to be
handed in or any other important item. It is also where the duty noticeboard is located
and where urgent notices are displayed. The noticeboards in the prep. room, exam board
next to the display cabinet, telephone booth, TV message system, calendars and prep
journals.
Do not enter the office unless invited by a member of staff.
Routines.
This is a difficult one. Times for lessons, meal-times and times for everything else are in
the calendar. Best idea is to keep on following people around until you have got the hang
of it. The reception is always womanned and they can usually find out where you should
be going. Do not worry if you get lost or are hopelessly late for a lesson. If you cannot
bear the idea of walking into a lesson late then go to reception. There is bound to be
someone there who can help you out. They should at least be able to contact your Tutor,
or other House staff.
Where can and can’t you go?
A detailed set of rules are listed in the work room and in your calendar. There are times
when you can and can’t go upstairs or leave the house. In general you should not leave
the house after prep. unless you have had permission. 6th Form can go to Lincoln,
Library or Tech. Block. All pupils should sign out when they leave and sign in when they
return. The signing out book is the work room. The house is locked during lesson time so
you should not return to try to get anything you have forgotten. Years 8-10 cannot go
upstairs between 8.30 a.m. and 3.45 p.m. and between 5.15 p.m. and bedtime during the
week. Year 11 are allowed at lunchtime and after 3.45 p.m.. Day pupils are not allowed
upstairs at all. This means that you will have to be organised. Years 8 to 10 must leave
school books in your locker downstairs. You will need a padlock for it. Spare keys can
be left on the key rack in the office. There are spare lockers available for Year 11
boarders; just ask.
Prep.
This is homework time.
Times are 6.30-7.30 Year 8; 6.30-8.00 Year 9/10; 6.30-8.30 Year 11. Staff will monitor
prep journals and ensure that you have recorded prep accurately.
House Visiting.
You may visit friends in other Houses at the following times.
Weekdays 4.00-5.15 p.m.
Saturdays 4.00-5.15 p.m. and 7.00-9.00 p.m.
Sundays 2.00-5.15 p.m. and 7.00-9.00 p.m.
Remember to sign out, sign in/out from the other house and sign in again. (In the Summer
term house visiting may be allowed between 8-9 p.m. on Fridays).
Unhappy or worried?
If you are unhappy or worried then talk to someone. The staff are all able to keep
confidences unless there is a compelling reason why they have to tell someone. If you
cannot speak to a member of the house staff then any member of staff will do!Otherwise
use the help line contact numbers in the work room and in your journal. Above all else do
not suffer in silence.
If you feel the need to complain then fill the complaint in the House Log. (in house
office). These are acted on by the HoH.
Medical Matters.
If you are unwell then find matron or send someone to find matron. If you are unhappy
with your treatment then see another member of staff. Someone you feel you can confide
in. Do not suffer in silence. All medicines should be passed to Matrons for safe keeping,
including over the counter medicines. You may be allowed to administer your own with
permission. Please ask.
Bedroom Safe
Each boarding student has the option of using a safe situated in their dorm. An 8 digit
code, known only by the student, can be used to open it. Anything of large value should
still be kept in the house office safe (more secure). Four AA batteries are needed for the
safe.
Reward and Punishments.
We have a house credit system. These are in the form of a raffle ticket towards a termly
prize. The ones with the most have the most chance. We have, occasionally, to punish
pupils for wrong doings. Various sanctions are available to staff which often revolve
around community service or the removal of free time. These are recorded in the
Sanction log, which is overseen by the Vice Principal.
Exeats.
This happens each half term. All pupils leave on the Friday (3.45-4.30)and return on the
Sunday(7-8 p.m.). . It is essential that you give us the exeat/half term arrangements form
at the start of each term. You must have a guardian in this country whatever your age if
your parent(s) guardian(s) are living abroad. Staff cannot make travel arrangements but
there is a minibus which transports pupils to/from Attleborough station and the Jetlink
coach at the end and start of exeats/holidays. At the end of term the dormitories have to
be emptied, personal things have to be taken home. For overseas students there is a
limited storage facility by arrangement with Matrons.
Going Home at weekends.
We do not expect Year 7 to 10 pupils to go home on the first weekend of the Autumn
term. This helps everyone to settle in. After this there is a strict system for giving
permission. This protects you. Weekend leave forms should be handed to the Head of
House on the Monday before the weekend in question. I will accept a from to cover all
weekends for each term but require a new form each term. I will accept notes or faxes
(not emails or phone calls) but they should contain the same information as the official
form.
Absits
Year 11 (but not the first two weekends in the Autumn Term) can go to Norwich on
Saturday afternoons, returning by 6.00 p.m., but need to inform the Head of House at the
start of the preceding week. All should sign out and in with a member of the duty staff.
School activities take priority over absits and weekend leaves and school rules apply (no
smoking, alcohol etc.).
Food.
All meals are compulsory. If you do not like the food and are not eating as a result then
please see a member of staff. There is a Food Committee which meets twice each term
and which you can volunteer for or you can give comments to its members. You can buy
sweets and snacks form the tuck shop. Its opening times are displayed outside. Biscuits
and drinks are provided at break, after school and in the evening. You can make toast and
heat food in the house kitchen area. This must be eaten downstairs in the work room. All
food eaten in house must be consumed in the work room or kitchen areas. All tuck
should be kept in lockers downstairs.
Telephone.
This is outside in the courtyard. It uses cash. Ask if you cannot find the phone. Please do
not hog the phone. Lots of people need to use it at peak times. So be fair. Emergency
phone calls can be made at the house office. The house phone can accept incoming calls
if urgent or if you have problems contacting relatives from abroad but this should not
happen during prep. time and should not be commonplace.
Damage to House Fabric and Facilities.
The main policy is that all damage should be reported. We shall then consider the
circumstances and deal with it in a fair manner.
Pupil Duties.
All pupils carry out house duties on a rota basis. These mainly involve some house
cleaning and tidying. The intention is the damage should be repaired and paid for if
necessary.. Look after your room. We do not tolerate vandals and louts.
Mail and Money.
Letters can be posted at reception (grey box outside). Stamps can be purchased at the tuck
shop . Pocket money can be kept safe in the house bank. Make cheques payable to
Wymondham College. Keep money safe and place large amounts in the house safe.
Pocket money is given out at breakfast, before breakfast for 3rd and 4th sittings and after
breakfast for 1st and 2nd sittings, and mail is given out each lunch at the office. A mail
list is posted for you to check at the office.
Dress, Hair, Jewellery.
School rules apply during the school day ( Breakfast until end of school). For reasons of
safety and hygiene, long hair (boys and girls) must be tied back in lessons, in the
Refectory and when in uniform. House staff reserve the right to make a judgment about
the suitability of leisure clothing either on grounds of safety or decency. We must always
consider the sensibilities of others in a mixed sex, mixed age boarding school.
Banned Items
Laser pens, aerosols, knives, chewing gum, TV tuners, DVD/MP4 players, fireworks, and
other items mentioned in school rules.
Washing clothes.
The system will be explained to you by matron. Please ask if you are not coping with this
aspect of your new life, It is a common problem! We charge £15 p.a. for washing
powder. This means that you do not have to worry about supplying it!
Mobile phones and Music Systems.
All pupils are allowed mobile phones (but not camera phones) if they wish but they
must sign the school license issued to them. This refers to conditions for use and a record
of the telephone number. We recommend that all phones are named and protected by a
PIN code. It is unwise to lend phones or leave them in your room. Misuse will lead to
loss of license. Music systems with speakers are only allowed for Years 11. Large and
loud systems are not allowed. We reserve the right to confiscate, and have sent home,
systems which are played too loudly. We should not be able to hear them behind closed
doors.
Using School Computers.
All pupils have access to school computers. All have their own password and can access
internet and email free of charge. It is unwise to let others know your password. It can
lead to loss of work and false accusations. There is a house booking system in the
evenings and at weekends. You can use the Tech. Block computers after school and at
certain times during prep. at the request of teaching staff. Pupils should be prepared to
give up their ‘leisure’ computer slot if another pupil has a more pressing work
commitment
Personal Computers
Year 11s (and younger pupils who have a particular reason, e.g. Dyslexia) can ask
permission to keep computers in the House Office. These can be used in the prep room.
A license agreement has to be signed for such computers and we reserve the right to
confiscate them if they are used for games during prep. or if DVDs or films are being
watched on them. Please be aware that PSP machines and IPODS (or similar) can store
video and pictures. Please make regular checks to ensure that this facility is not being
used on these machines.
Fire Alarms
If the fire alarm goes off you must leave the House immediately and line up in the
assembly area. See Fire Notices to check the appropriate area. Be quiet and be quick but
do not run. There will be a check that everyone is accounted for. It is very important that
you sign out and in when leaving from and returning to the house. The Fire Brigade will
attend each time and so false alarms must be avoided.
House Buddies/Mentors
We have a nw system of house buddies/mentors. The idea is to link older pupils with
younger pupils to provide support and guidance whilst in Fry. We are initially
teaming up Year 11 and Year 8 but intend extending the scheme to combine Y8 with
Y10 and Y9 with Y11 i.e. a potential two year commitment!
Role of Older Pupils
Older pupils have a general responsibility to maintain order and provide support for
younger pupils in the house. All Year 11 students are expected to carry out house duties
and so assist in the safe and efficient running of the house. Guidance and training will be
given, including Child Protection training for boarders. Day pupils will assist with Break
and Lunch duties. Boarders will assist with evening duties.. Year 11 students can report
poor and good behaviour to staff by recording it in a Senior Pupil record book, kept in the
House Office.
House Council
Elected members from each form sit on the house council. Minutes from meetings are
published and copies sent to the Vice Principal. A whole school council discusses issues
raised each term.
