September, 2010 Dear University of Exeter Cornwall Campus Law Student Welcome! We look forward to your arrival at the Cornwall Campus for Welcome Week and the start of the new academic year. As you will see from the enclosure, there is a Welcome Week timetable advising you of activities throughout the week. Please ensure that you attend all of the scheduled sessions as they all provide information of great use in preparation for your degree programme. Monday 27 September has been left free to create an opportunity for you to settle in and familiarise yourself with your new location. Campus staff will be available to answer any queries you may have. As well as attending the Unicard collection session, various talks on student services, Library and IT and the teamworking session, please be sure to attend the Law Programme Welcome Talk on Tuesday 28th September at 9am in the Cinema, Media Centre (please check at Main Reception where this is). At the Law Programme talk we intend to give some background to the way the programme will be delivered and to practical matters such as timetables, Personal Tutors, seminar groups and so on. Some parts of the induction process will involve attendance at a brief group seminar session, followed by completion of a group talk – all students are expected to participate fully in these initial sessions. Since lectures start the following week, this information will be vital to your ability to begin your studies in earnest. The timetable of lectures and seminar classes will be given to you when you arrive. Once you have registered you will be able to link to your ‘Student Records System’ (SRS) where you can obtain various student specific information. You must ensure all the relevant information is correct including your contact details. It is imperative that these details are kept up to date all times including your address and telephone number as appropriate, the link is https://srs.exeter.ac.uk/. The main Falmouth bookshop [The Falmouth Bookseller] has been provided with a booklist covering the subjects for the first academic year in Law; Waterstones in Truro has also been informed and both have acquired stock accordingly. The Falmouth bookshop tells us that new stock can be acquired on a next-day basis. The lecturers recommend that you wait for your initial lectures to take place before purchasing books, as some perspectives and the comparative merits of the books may be given and therefore we have elected not to attach the booklist at this stage although the choice of books is also a matter for your judgement, some books may emerge more clearly as useful texts as a result of discussion on your arrival. It is often the case that for each module, one book in particular is recommended. The first year Introduction to Law module will make such recommendations and as an early guide you may wish to purchase Finch and Fafinski, Legal Skills, OUP, 2nd edn 2009. You may also wish to consider buying or initially borrowing one of the following: The first year Introduction to law module will make several recommendations on books which you will not need until the course starts.
