TGJ 4M(E) – Grade 12 Film Textual Analysis Portfolio (Groups of Two) Due Thursday, November 15 The Textual Analysis Portfolio consists of two parts: A) Presentation Select a film from the list and prepare a 10 minute presentation that includes: a) overview/summary b) plot/story (show trailer) c) genre, cast, year, director, box office earnings, any other pertinent pieces of information, etc… Select 3 of the following elements of film and analyze/show a clip/scene from the movie that demonstrates effective use of the selected element. Elements of film -cinematography, sound/score, lighting, editing, setting B) Written Report The written report or film analysis/review is a minimum of five paragraphs. It should include the following elements: 1. In the opening paragraph state the title, and briefly summarize the plot of the movie. a) Describe how you truly feel about the film. b) What is your honest reaction to the film? c) Did you like/dislike it? d) Was it confusing? e) Exciting? f) Suspenseful? g) Boring? 2. In the next three paragraphs analyze the literary, dramatic, and cinematic aspects of the film. Use examples from the movie to support your analysis. i. Literary The literary aspects pertaining to the story, dialogue and characters. Was there a good story? Believable characters? Good dialogue? Did the main character change throughout the film? Did you notice a character arc? What was the main conflict and how was it resolved? Did the story interest you? ii. Dramatic The dramatic aspects pertaining to the acting, sets, locations and costumes. Were the actors good? Was the setting or location interesting? Did the actors wear costumes? Was there a famous movie star in the film? iii. Cinematic The cinematic aspects pertaining to the camera angles, composition, lighting, music and sound effects. Did you notice the cinematography? Were there interesting camera angles, or cool video and sound effects? Did the music match the film? 3. C) In the conclusion, rate the film and state whether or not you would recommend the film to a friend and why.
