USEFUL TIPS AND LINKS FOR THE
NEW GRADUATE BUSINESS
STUDENT
WIRELESS CANES ACCESS
WirelessCanes is UM’s wireless network available in
most areas of the Coral Gables campus, free of
charge to all currently enrolled students. All you
need is a computer equipped with an 802.11b
wireless network card.
Courtesy of the Graduate
Business Students Association
(GBSA)
Symantec Antivirus protection (free to all enrolled
students) is required to gain access to the Wireless
Canes network.
Gaining access to Wireless Canes requires you to
register your computer’s MAC address using the
EASY system. Instructions are available online. In
addition to completing the registration process, you
will likely need to configure your laptop by adjusting
some of its wireless networking settings. The
CaneNet Quick-Start Guide, also available online,
can take the guesswork out of the configuration
process. For assistance in configuring or
troubleshooting Wireless Canes, contact
Telecommunications at 305-284-6565 (option 3).
The Graduate Business Students
Association (GBSA) is headed by a
group of elected student leaders within
the School of Business Administration.
Its general purpose is to represent the
students and their interests while
facilitating both community and
professional involvement/exposure.
HEALTH CENTER
The Student Health Center is located across the
street from the Pavia Garage. This is where
students go for all (non-emergency) health-related
concerns, including everyday medical services,
immunization shots, prescriptions and refills, STD
testing (including free HIV tests), other routine
examinations, and referrals. Visit its website

WELCOME TO THE
UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
The GBSA is including this pamphlet as part of
your orientation materials to make your transition
into the program easier. An online version of this
document (with clickable Internet links) is available

HOUSING
UM does not provide on-campus housing for
graduate students. If you're in need of a roommate,
consider rooming with another person from the
MBA program, since your goals, schedules, and
curriculum are likely to be similar. You may post or
browse roommate and vacancy ads on UM’s OffCampus Housing Listing. Get neighborhood
information and plenty of useful tips online at UM’s
Off-Campus Housing Handbook. Regularly
published apartment finding resources are available
for free at local grocery stores, bus stops,
convenience stores, and drug stores. Additional
online resources include: easyroommate.com,
aptlists.com, rentnet.com, forrent.com, rent.com,
apartmentguide.com, and the Herald classifieds.
PARKING
Regular and discount parking permits can be
purchased on UM’s EASY system (Login  My
Student Menu  Parking  Apply for Permit).
The cost of the permit you choose will be billed to
your student account. You may pick up the permits
at the Parking & Transportation Services office in
the Ponce Garage immediately following the
successful submission of your application. You
must present your Cane Card ID and vehicle
registration in order to receive a parking permit.
Most MBA students choose to park either in the
Pavia Garage or in the parking lots across the street
from Doctor’s Hospital. Visit Parking and
Transportation Services for maps and additional
parking info (including discount permit restrictions).
STUDY ROOMS
Note: For facilities (and all major university service) hours,
please refer to the enclosed Fall 2005 Master Schedule.
Conference rooms are available on the 3rd and 5th
floors of the Graduate Business Building and can be
reserved by contacting Doris Jui at 305-284-5670.
Please refer to your Student Notebook, section 4
“Room Reservation Policy” for information on
availability and procedures. Additional meeting
rooms are available in the Study Center, located
next to the Ziff Placement Center. Contact Doris
Jui for reservation information (see above for
contact numbers). The Richter Library has 13
group study rooms that can be reserved at the
Circulation Desk on a first-come, first-serve basis.
They will also provide whiteboard markers and
erasers upon presentation of your Cane Card.
LOCKERS
Small lockers are located in the Study Center. These
lockers are available on a daily, first-come first-serve
basis. There is no reservation process required, or a
cost for use. Just bring a standard padlock and you
are welcome to use a locker. Remember that all
padlocks must be removed from lockers by the time
the Study Center closes each day (reference the Fall
2005 Master Schedule for hours).
BUSINESS CARDS & NAME TAGS
High-quality name tags will be provided, free of
charge, to all MBA students this year. These tags
are useful during career fairs and other events, and
will be delivered within 4 weeks of the start of
classes. Replacement tags will not be provided for
free, so please keep them in a secure place.
Order forms for business cards are included in your
orientation notebook, and are also available in the
Jenkins Building, room 221, at the front desk. You
may order business cards beginning the first day of
classes (cost is $35 for 500 and $17.50 for 250,
payable by check at the time of order). The cards
will be in standardized UM format. You may
include your name, graduate degree, expected
graduation date, concentration, address, cellular
phone, home phone and email address on these
cards. Two to three weeks processing time is
required prior to picking up your cards, so ordering
your cards early in the school year is a good idea.
TWO FEES TO KNOW ABOUT
The Athletic Fee entitles you to attend assigned
home games for football, baseball and basketball
and intercollegiate contests. Free transportation is
included for events held at the Orange Bowl and
Miami Arena. The fee is $30 for the Fall semester,
and is not automatically included in your
registration process. You may pay this fee (in cash)
by going to the Cashier’s Office in the Ashe
Building, room 158.
Paying the Wellness Center Fee entitles you to
have access to UM’s premier fitness, recreation, and
wellness facility located at 1241 Dickinson Drive on
the Coral Gables campus. You can find out more
about this multi-million-Dollar facility by visiting the
Wellness and Recreation website. The fee is
automatically included in your registration, but
can be waived (no later than the last day to add a
class) each semester. To waive the fee, complete
the waiver form and submit it to the Office of
Student Account Services in the Ashe Building.
EASY AND BLACKBOARD SYSTEMS
The EASY system is a web-based interface that
allows you to easily access your official information
at the University of Miami at any time, from any
computer on the Internet. You will use this system
all the time, and should keep your personal/contact
information updated.
The Blackboard system contains websites for many
of the courses at UM. Most of your professors will
post assignments, grades, notes, and other critical
course information on this site, so check it daily.
