Catalog Description
and Prerequisites:
This course provides an introduction to information technology, systems
concepts, and application software. It covers system components and
relationships, cost/value and quality of information, and package software
solutions. It includes Basic skills related to operating systems, word processing,
spreadsheet software, and Internet.

Student Learning Objectives:
The students will be able to:
 describe the purpose and functioning of information systems encountered in everyday life (e.g.,
ATMs).
 define and describe a computer as well as basic hardware and software components and
implementations.
 demonstrate knowledge of commonly used information systems terminology (e.g., browser).
 compare and contrast various types of computers in terms of size, capability, and application
 demonstrate awareness of the pace and direction of progress in communications, electronic
storage and computing power.
 use the basic features of the Windows environment.
 create and maintain basic Word documents by using MS-Word software.
 create and maintain basic electronic spreadsheets using Ms-Excel software and its various
functions.
 create and maintain a database with its basic objects using MS Access.
 demonstrate navigating the Web.
 distinguish between different Internet applications including email: how they work and how they
are used.
 create and maintain a simple home page by using HTML.
 utilize the search concepts used in libraries and databases.
 demonstrate awareness of the social implications of information technology (e.g., security and
privacy).
 describe the interaction of communications and computers as related to remote transaction
processing.
 describe the role of programming language and software engineering
 explain the process of planning, coding, and testing a computer program
Note: Objectives related to each topic will be addressed at the beginning of each class.
Course Expectations and Policies:
 Course Expectations: Each student is expected to read the assigned material and
prepare the written assignments prior to class. The university standard for course
workload is two hours of outside work for every hour in class, i.e., a 3-unit course
requires 6 hours of work outside the classroom, or a total of 9 hrs/week.
 Attendance Policy: It is expected that students will attend class regularly and
participate in the class discussion throughout the term. Attendance and class
participation will be used in the final determination of grades and can alter your grade
up or down. Students are allowed two excused absences. More than two may result
in a lower grade or failure in the course
 Academic Integrity: Cheating or plagiarism in connection with an academic program
or class at a campus is subject to discipline as provided in Sections 41301 through
41304 of Title 5, California Code of Regulations. Please see the University Catalog
for further information.
 Due Dates/Make Up Work: Examinations must be taken as scheduled; Assignments
are due when scheduled. Make-ups will be allowed only if the student has contacted
the professor before the due date, detailing a serious problem.

1. Since this course is skill based, each student will be expected participate actively in the classroom. Also,
each student must spend at least 2 additional hours a week practicing on the computer.
2. Students must attend every class. Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class session.
3. Students are expected to always be on time.
4. Lab exercises and lab assignments will be provided weekly, and must be turned-in at the beginning
of class on the following Week. See the assignment sheet.
5. Students must do their own work. The CSUDH policy statement on cheating and plagiarism applies
to all students. All work submitted is to be original work, and any one caught cheating will receive
an “F: as a final grade.
6. Turn off all cell phones and pagers before entering class.
