Course Description:
This course covers the fundamental computer concepts with an emphasis on practical use of
personal computers in business and personal situations. Personal computer hardware, operating
systems, and application software are introduced in this course. Windows software will be used to
illustrate disk organizations. The basic skills of word processing using MS WORD xx for
Windows, spreadsheet and data base management software will illustrated with MS EXCEL xx
and MS Access xx for Windows. This course will also cover a brief introduction how to create
home page using HTML, as will as introduction to the Internet applications such as E-mail and
web browsing. Computer terminology will be widely discussed enabling a person to become
computer literate.

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The students will be able to:
 define and describe a computer as well as a basic Hardware and Software components and
implementations of a digital computer.
 use the basic features of Windows environment (user task and windows applications).
 create and maintain basic and advance a Word document by using MS-word software.
 create and maintain basic and advance an electronic spreadsheet using Ms-Excel software
and its various functions.
 create and maintain a database with its basic objects using MS Access.
 navigate through the Internet
 distinguish between different Internet applications, how it works and how it will be used.
 create and maintain a simple home page by using HTML.
Note: Objectives related to each topic will be addressed at the beginning of each class.
Course Expectations and Policies:
Expectations
Course Expectations: Each student is expected to read the assigned material and prepare the
written assignments prior to class. The university standard for course workload is two
hours of outside work for every hour in class, i.e., a 3-unit course requires 6 hours of work
outside the classroom, or a total of 9 hrs/week.
Attendance
It is expected that students will attend class regularly and participate in the class discussion
throughout the term. If you miss a meeting, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from a
fellow student. Attendance and class participation will be used in the final determination of
grades and can alter your grade up or down. Students are allowed two excused absences.
More than two may result in a lower grade or failure in the course.

Due Dates / MAKE-UP Work
Examinations must be taken as scheduled; Assignments are due when scheduled. NO
MAKE-UP for any test, quiz or lab assignment except in case of serious problem (with
official report).

Important reminders:
1. Since this course is skill based, each student will be expected participate actively in the classroom. Also,
each student must spend at least 2 additional hours a week practicing on the computer.
2. Students must attend every class. Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class session.
3. Students are expected to always be on time.
4. Lab exercises and lab assignments will be provided weekly, and must be turned-in at the beginning
of class on the following Week. See the assignment sheet.
5. Students must do their own work. The CSUDH policy statement on cheating and plagiarism applies
to all students. All work submitted is to be original work, and any one caught cheating will receive
an “F: as a final grade.
6. Turn off all cell phones and pagers before entering class.
